4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Space Science

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will focus on modeling the complete gas phase of Europa’s plumes, a critical component in determining the habitability of this ocean world in the Jupiter system. The project involves developing a physical simulation model to quantify changes in the chemical composition of Europa’s plumes from their liquid reservoirs to their gas phase. The successful candidate will work with existing Monte Carlo models and newly acquired DSMC models, aiming to provide valuable insights for ESA’s JUICE and NASA’s Europa Clipper missions. This research is poised to significantly enhance our understanding of Europa’s potential to support life and will be an integral part of the science preparation for the measurements conducted by the mass spectrometers on the JUICE mission (JUICE / NIM) and the Europa Clipper mission (Europa Clipper / MASPEX).

6. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The main goal of the funded project “Accompanying research for curriculum development at the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich” is to scientifically examine questions surrounding the goals and effects of current curriculum reforms. Multifactorial studies will be used to examine various key parameters (e.g. satisfaction, knowledge and skills) of medical students before and after the study reform. A longitudinal study is also planned in this context. As part of the research cooperation, evidence-based quality assurance and maintenance of the curricula will be tested and established.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate Sciences: Next-generation vegetation modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will tackle one of the major sources for uncertainty in climate and Earth system projections reliable predictions of how water and nutrients govern vegetation, carbon and water cycling, and their responses to a changing climate and CO2. The aim is to integrate eco-evolutionary optimality theory and observational constraints into a dynamic model for simulating global land ecosystem functioning and structure.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Psychology / Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

The working group led by Prof. Dr. Jessica Peter (University Clinic for Geriatric Psychiatry and Psychotherapy) is researching how memory processes change in old age or in the case of illness and which interventions are suitable to counteract this. The research group uses modern and innovative methods of cognitive neuroscience (e.g. 7T imaging, non-invasive brain stimulation). In the current project, non-invasive brain stimulation is used in younger and older people with depression to change the interpretation bias.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Tissue Engineering using Silk for Intervertebral Disc Repair

Summary of PhD Program:

Lcow back pain (LBP) is a severe pathology which affects about 80% of Western societies. The LBP is often associated with degenerated intervertebral discs (IVD) of the spine. Currently, no ideal solutions are available to restore a degenerated disc and its functions. The selected candidate will be integrated into an internationally competitive research environment, combining experimental and theoretical methods to test original scientific hypotheses and to develop innovative implant technology to “rescue” or repair the degenerated intervertebral disc. She/he will work on a cross-disciplinary research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).

11. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Behavioural Ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

While the ecological and evolutionary significance of behavioural plasticity is well recognized, we still know little about the physiological processes that facilitate flexibly switching between several, potentially conflicting behaviours – such as aggression and parental care. In this project, we will investigate how cognitive, hormonal, and neuronal mechanisms act together in flexibly balancing contrasting behavioural decisions. We hypothesise that trade-offs between aggressive and parental behaviours also manifest on a physiological level, and that short-term changes in steroid release and/or sensitivity may provide animals with a mechanism for adapting their behavioural responses to rapidly changing contexts.
