1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modeling of microstructure evolution and failure of aluminum under neutron load

Summary of PhD Program:

The research activities of the section Mechanics of Materials concentrate on the fundamental understanding of various macroscopic problems in materials processing, forming and application, which emerge from the physics and the mechanics of the underlying material microstructure. The main challenge is the accurate prediction of mechanical properties of materials with complex microstructures, with a direct focus on industrial and societal needs. The thorough understanding and modelling of processes that can be identified in the complex evolving microstructure is thereby a key issue. The section has a unique research infrastructure, both from an experimental and computational perspective.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in photonic integration for space-based metrology

Summary of PhD Program:

Photonics is widely regarded as the key enabling technology of the 21st century and its application and use in many scientific and industrial fields is accelerated though Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), which combine many optical components into a miniaturized chip format. Similar to electronic ICs, PICs are revolutionizing areas such as healthcare, communication and sensing and have the potential to be disruptive to the whole society. These technologies are receiving major investments in Eindhoven. For the EU-funded project INPHOMIR, a collaboration with industrial and academic partners from six EU countries, we have open positions at the electrical engineering department of TU Eindhoven. We consider applicants for PhD research and post-doctoral research.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in sub-THz Reverberation Chambers: Measurements Beyond 300 GHz (IPCEI-6G)

Summary of PhD Program:

As part of Europe investment in semiconductor technology, a large Dutch IPCEI program for the development and production of Radio Frequency (RF) Front end products for 6G communication systems has been granted, where NXP is the overall coordinator. 5G systems are still in an early stage of deployment, enabling solutions for high-speed low-latency connectivity for a wide range of applications enabling smart cars, smart factories and connected sensors. With IoT devices expected to triple by 2030, from 10B today to 30B, 5G technologies will probably hit limitations. Although some functionalities have been demonstrated, power consumption/heat dissipation combined with RF performance remain one of the biggest challenges.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Turning slags from fossilfree steelmaking into circular building materials

Summary of PhD Program:

In the next seven years the iron & steel industry, as well as the cement industry will drastically transform their production processes to achieve major reductions in CO2-emissions and a circular economy as mandated by the European Green Deal. As part of this process steel production will change from carbothermic to hydrogen based. This will lead to significantly different slags with consequences for both the steel and the cement industry. Concrete is by far the most produced material in the world, and reducing its environmental impact is a major concern. Currently granulated Blast Furnace slag from carbothermic iron-production is used to replace up to 85% of Ordinary Portland cement clinker. In future fossil-free steelmaking the Blast Furnace slags will no longer be available.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in alkaline water electrolysis

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD position will focus on the flexibility and durability improvement of alkaline water electrolysis. This is especially relevant for electrolyzers that are coupled to variable renewable electricity supply, such as sun and wind. An important aspect of flexibility is the tolerance to frequent shutdowns, which can lead to reverse currents and potentially damage electrodes. Goal of the PhD position is to elucidate the shutdown process and its potentially detrimental effects on the electrodes. The generated insights can then be used to develop an accelerated stress test protocol that can be used to screen new electrode materials on their robustness.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrospunbound porous membrane adsorbers for water purification & reuse

Summary of PhD Program:

Membrane adsorbers are porous structures (polymer matrix) with specific functionalities that selectively adsorb and remove undesired components from water sources. As both the type of matrix material and its morphology as well as the specific functionalities can be selected independently, membrane adsorption is a very versatile technology applicable for the purification or recovery of a multitude of different feed streams and applications. The approach proposed here is founded on nanofiber electrospinning using water or green solvent soluble polymers with intrinsic functionalities to prepare porous hierarchical structures in one single step with tunable properties for specific separations. Electrospinning is a fiber production method that uses an electrical voltage to generate fibers from a polymer solution that are collected on a removable support forming a highly porous fibrous mat. The thickness, porosity and pore size can be easily tailored towards a specific application.

13. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in digital twins for modelling and forecasting induced seismicity

Summary of PhD Program:

You will build on some preparatory works [1-6], showing as a proof-of-concept that a soft-glass, forced below yield stress, follows stick-slip dynamics and closely mimics the empirical laws observed for tectonic seismicity (Gutenberg-Richter law, Omori’s law, interevent time distribution). The model needs to be tuned to a specific field situation where induced seismicity is occurring. This is the central part of this project. Once tuned, the digital twin will replicate what is happening in the field. Further, once tuned, different fluid migration scenarios can be tested to explore, for example, which protocols may produce induced seismicity with the steepest possible Gutenberg-Richter slope.
