5. Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research group for Magnetic Resonance Signal Enhancement headed by Stefan Glöggler is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (f/m/d) – new contrast mechanisms for magnetic resonance to measure blood oxygenation. Oxygen is the fuel of life and in its absence, most cells and organisms die within minutes. The Signal Enhancement group focuses on the development of new methods and contrasts for MRI and MRS and bringing these advances to biomedical application with an ultimate goal of clinical translation. In a joint project together with the Medical Physics Group of the University Medical Center Freiburg we are aiming at developing new approaches to study blood oxygenation and its changes in diseases. Techniques in our labs that will be applied include proton spectroscopy and potentially the use of signal-enhanced/hyperpolarized 13C probes.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The war in Ukraine marks the coming of age of the European Union (EU) as a geopolitical actor. Indeed, we are already witnessing the first legal and political changes at the EU level in response to the aggression against our neighbour. And it is very likely that even more profound governance transformations will follow to cope with the new geopolitical realities – be it in terms of actors and competences, decision-making and regulation, financial arrangements and industrial policy, or international cooperation and partnerships. The aim of the Max Planck Research Group ENSURE (European security revisited) is to explore and critically assess the – potentially significant – reshaping of law and governance triggered by this geopolitical adjustment. In addition to examining specific policy areas central to European security (e.g. energy, IT, defence), the group also investigates the challenges associated with key new security threats and phenomena (e.g. climate change, health emergencies, food shortages).

15. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Our institute is dedicated to the investigation of “biological intelligence”. We aim to understand how animal organisms developed skills in the course of evolution to adapt to a constantly changing environment and to always find new solutions to problems. For a project funded by the NIH (National Institutes of Health, USA) the research group Tools for Bio-Imaging at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence is looking to hire a Postdoc (m/f/d) with an interest in biophysics, structural and molecular biology, protein engineering, and, more generally, in tool development and neuroscience. The molecular basis for plasticity in neuronal circuits is well understood, but less is known how these mechanisms are orchestrated in space and time and how neuronal activity in vivo leaves its molecular imprint. To address these questions, we will engineer a palette of high-performance fluorescent sensors for key events related to long term plastic change. Work will involve both structural studies on biosensor designs as well as screening approaches to increase signal strength of such sensors.

17. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Project: Electrochemical Ammonia Oxidation: A way to obtain industrially-valuable chemicals? The Haber-Bosch process uses elevated pressures, temperatures and iron-containing catalysts to fixate nitrogen with the help of hydrogen into NH3 – the key ingredient of fertilizers, transferring nitrogen from the air into our soils. If the required H2 is produced from water electrolysis, ammonia expands its role from being a chemical carrier of nitrogen to transporting and storing green hydrogen. Reversing the Haber-Bosch process, the hydrogen could then be released from NH3 sustainably via ammonia fuel cells. However, NH3 is also a key ingredient for the industrial production of various chemicals. So far, no larger efforts have been undertaken to use the electrochemical ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) for direct and sustainable conversion of NH3 into feedstocks for the chemical industry.

18. Post-Doctoral Fellow

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We currently offer 1 PhD or postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) for the Thin Films group within the Department of Interface Science. Project: Thin film oxide electrocatalysis One scenario for the future ‘Green Economy’ involves the large-scale use of molecular hydrogen. H2 can balance fluctuations in the production of renewable energy, but green H2 can also be an energy carrier for various industrial applications. The efficiency of the electrocatalytic production of H2 by water splitting is hampered by the concomitant oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, there is a pressing need to find a highly active, cost-efficient and durable catalyst to minimize the energy overhead. Mixed oxide catalysts containing Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, La, and V have shown a promising performance in alkaline media, with a complex and not well understood dependence on the catalyst’s composition and the preparation procedure. Improving the fundamental understanding to enable a rational catalyst design is the purpose of the planned project. To this end, the mixed oxide pre-catalysts will be prepared as crystalline epitaxial films, which avoids hidden surfaces and strongly reduces the structural and compositional complexity, thus enabling a better understanding of the electrocatalytic process.

35. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which – like the sun – generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future. For the large-scale experiment ASDEX Upgrade in Garching, we are developing solutions for the acquisition, storage and evaluation of data from about one hundred sophisticated physical diagnostics, preferably on Linux computers. The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within this division a position for two computer scientists or electrical engineers (f/m/d) with the main focus on Scientific data collection systems or data management.
