Dissertation Award Program Eligibility Criteria

Current and former students who will have been awarded the Ph.D., or who will have successfully defended and officially submitted their dissertations to the Graduate Student Services & Progress (GSSP) office, between July 1, 2021, and April 5, 2024, will be eligible to be nominated. UMN-Twin Cities and UMN-Duluth graduate programs that offer the Ph.D. may nominate one student.

University of Minnesota DOVE Fellowship Coverage

The DOVE fellowship is a $25,000 stipend, academic year tuition at the general graduate rate for up to 14 credits per semester, subsidized health insurance through the Graduate Assistant Health Plan for up to one calendar year, option to attend the GSDO Summer Institute (includes $4,000 stipend and health insurance coverage), and a minimum of $1,000 for research/conference travel funding.

University of Minnesota DOVE Fellowship Eligibility Criteria

• The DOVE fellowship is for incoming/prospective Master’s and PhD students in research-based programs.
• Eligible graduate programs include master’s or doctoral research-based programs.
• Applicants to a Professional Program should apply to the Provost’s Professional Education Diversity Fellowship.
• U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, prospective students lawfully in the U.S. on a non-temporary basis, and MN Dream Act students.
• Graduate program applicants entering the University of Minnesota for the first time in the 2023-24 academic year.
• Applicants who have already earned a terminal degree are NOT eligible. If selected, the recipient must be admitted to the nominating graduate research program as a degree-seeking student by Fall semester 2024.
• At least two (2) DOVE Fellowships will be awarded to McNair Scholars.

About CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award

Two awards are given annually in two different broad areas (mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering; and social sciences; and the biological and life sciences; and humanities and fine arts). Individuals must be nominated for these awards by a member institution, nominations will be accepted until June 30, 2023. Nominated dissertations must be in the ProQuest database to be eligible.

The fields of competition for this year are:

1. Biological Sciences/Life Sciences: biology; botany; zoology; ecology; embryology; entomology; genetics; nutrition; plant pathology; plant physiology; anatomy; biochemistry; biophysics; microbiology; pathology; pharmacology; physiology; and related fields (health sciences). Also included are agriculture, forestry, zoology; and related fields.

2. Humanities and Fine Arts: history; philosophy; language; linguistics; literature; archaeology; jurisprudence; the history, theory and criticism of the arts; ethics; comparative religion; and those aspects of the social sciences that employ historical or philosophical approaches.

CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Awards Eligibility Criteria

• “Regular” institutional members of CGS may submit nominations.
• Each eligible member may nominate one person in the field of humanities and fine arts and one person in the field of biological sciences. (for a total of two nominations maximum, per institution). A separate nomination form and package must be submitted for each institutional nominee.
• The effective date of the degree awarded, or the completion of doctoral degree requirements and dissertation, must lie in the period of July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2023, inclusive, for each nominee selected. Such degree award or completion is to be confirmed by the institution’s graduate dean or other administrative officer responsible for doctoral degree programs.
