FAQ About Scholarship

Am I required to take up citizenship and/or work in Singapore after graduation?

After graduating, you are not compelled to apply for citizenship or find employment in Singapore. However, there are employment options for overseas PhD grads to consider following your studies if you are eager to work in Singapore.

Why does the SINGA office offer scholarships for a direct PhD programme instead of the normal Masters programme followed by doctoral studies?

Singapore institutions have embraced the worldwide standard of accepting students with a Bachelor’s degree for graduate studies leading to a PhD. After completing a qualifying test, the students are required to start with coursework and research before working on a research thesis. SINGA scholarship recipients typically finish their PhD programmes in 4 years.

Will graduate students be more competitive than undergraduates?

In comparison to undergraduates, graduate students would receive a more thorough evaluation of their research experience. The project proposal and interview processes will determine the candidate’s success for SINGA.

How many awards will be offered each year?

Throughout the academic year, SINGA prizes are given out twice: once for the August intake and once for the January intake. It is a merit-based scholarship, and all deserving applicants will be taken into consideration.

Can current students already enrolled in PhD programmes apply for SINGA?

Yes, you are welcome to explain in your SINGA application why you are applying to a different PhD course.

If I have recently attained Singapore citizenship, am I still eligible for SINGA?

Singapore nationals who meet the requirements may apply for the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (AGS).
