About AALL Degree Candidate Scholarship 2024

AALL is committed to providing opportunities for professional growth. Each year, the Association awards scholarships to assist individuals in meeting their educational goals in the field of legal information. Individuals should apply for all of the scholarships for which they qualify.

Scholarships are available to assist individuals studying to become law librarians as either a library or law school student, or to library school graduates seeking an advanced degree in a related field. Candidates should apply for more than one scholarship when appropriate.

Preference is given to AALL members, but scholarships are not restricted to members. Applicants with law library experience are also given preference, but it is not required. Evidence of financial need must be submitted.

1. AALL Scholarship

This scholarship is funded through donations from AALL members, and is awarded annually to individuals seeking a degree from an accredited library or law school, and who intend to have a career in legal information, or to a library school graduate seeking an advanced degree in a related field.

2. LexisNexis John R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by LexisNexis in honor of John R. Johnson, who served as the director of the law library segment at LexisNexis. The scholarship is awarded annually to individuals seeking a degree from an accredited library or law school, and who intend to have a career in legal information, or to a library school graduate seeking an advanced degree in a related field.

3. Marcia J. Koslov Scholarship

Jointly established by AALL and member Marcia J. Koslov, this scholarship supports AALL members who work in a government law library, by providing funding to attend continuing education programs.

4. George A. Strait Scholarship

The endowed scholarships and fellowships honors the memory of longtime AALL member, and distinguished law librarian, George A. Strait. The endowment was established by Thomson Reuters in partnership with AALL.

Scholarship Qualifications

1. College graduate seeking library degree. Awarded to a college graduate with meaningful law library experience who is a degree candidate in an accredited library school with the intention of having a career as a law librarian.

2. College graduate seeking dual law/library degree. Awarded to a college graduate working toward a dual degree in an accredited law school and library school with the intention of having a career as a law librarian. 

3. Law school graduate seeking library degree. Awarded to a law school graduate working toward a degree in an accredited library school with the intention of having a career as a law librarian.

4. Library school graduate seeking law degree. Awarded to a library school graduate working toward a degree in an accredited law school with the intention of having a career as a law librarian.

5. Library school graduate seeking non-law degree. Awarded to a library school graduate who is a degree candidate in an area, other than law, which will be beneficial to the development of a professional career in law librarianship.

Required Documents

1. Application form

2. Transcripts (official or student copy) from all institutions attended beyond high school in the last ten years.

3. A letter from the Admissions Officer of the law school/library school, stating the program for which you have been accepted and the date the courses begin or, a transcript (official or student copy) showing that you are a degree candidate in good standing with at least one quarter/semester remaining after the scholarship is awarded.

4. Two letters of recommendation. Select persons who have knowledge of your abilities and experience.

Access to lectures and assignments depends on your type of enrollment. If you take a course in audit mode, you will be able to see most course materials for free. To access graded assignments and to earn a Certificate, you will need to purchase the Certificate experience, during or after your audit. If you don’t see the audit option:

• The course may not offer an audit option. You can try a Free Trial instead, or apply for Financial Aid.

• The course may offer ‘Full Course, No Certificate’ instead. This option lets you see all course materials, submit required assessments, and get a final grade. This also means that you will not be able to purchase a Certificate experience.

  • Be enrolled in an ALA accredited library graduate school program; or law school in the U.S.
  • Be a member of a recognized minority group (as defined by current U.S. guidelines).
  • Intend to pursue a career in law librarianship.
  • Complete the Strait Scholarship/Fellowship application, indicating their interest in either the scholarship or the Fellows program, or both.

2. The most recent transcript (official or student copy) from your current institution, and the institution which granted your most recent degree. If not yet enrolled, an official letter of acceptance must be submitted. Please make sure transcripts are not password protected.

3. Two letters of recommendation. Select persons who have knowledge of your abilities and experience. Please submit letters of recommendation with the application.

4. A personal statement in which you include:

  • Financial information you feel the jury could use in determining your financial need;
  • Your interest in law librarianship and reasons for applying for this scholarship;
  • Your career goals as a law librarian.

You may also include other pertinent information such as work and family commitments that you would like the Scholarship Jury to consider when evaluating your application. Personal statements should be complete and well-written.

Your personal statement should establish your financial need by thoroughly and clearly addressing your financial situation and need for a scholarship. You should also detail any leadership roles you have had in AALL or any library associations.

5. A current resume.

Scholarship recipients will be announced in June and the awards will be disbursed shortly thereafter. Individuals eligible for this scholarship are AALL members who serve as librarians in state, court or county libraries.

This scholarship provides funding for members to attend live seminars and conferences presented by the Institute for Court Management, the Center for Legal and Court Technology, the Equal Justice Conference or other programs that provide continuing education for state, court or county law librarians.

One or more scholarships are awarded annually. Scholarships are restricted to members of the American Association of Law Libraries. Preference shall be given to permanent residents of the United States and Canada.

  • Your interest in law librarianship and reasons for applying for this scholarship.
  • Your career goals as a law librarian.
