3. EPSRC ICASE Studentship – Digital twins of physical optical networking infrastructure

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Applications are invited for a joint Microsoft Research UK / EPSRC ICASE funded PhD project in the area of optical fibre communication systems. In core networks there is a huge quantity of metrology available ranging from SNR and BER measured by the transceivers through to the input and output powers of optical amplifiers and switches. The aim of this PhD project would be to use machine learning applied to metrology information, combined with the underpinning physics to create a digital twin of the physical optical network infrastructure. Not only would the digital twin be updated in real-time, but it would also incorporate the uncertainty into the model allowing for real-time margin allocation to improve the operation of the optical network.

4. EPSRC ICASE Studentship – Creating a photonic networking layer

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Applications are invited for a joint BT EPSRC ICASE funded PhD project in the area of optical fibre communication systems. Currently optical networking is driven by the networking layer with the Internet Protocol (IP), treating the physical photonic layer as static pipes with no intelligence. However, this is currently changing with the emergence of machine learning and the availability of high-speed pluggable transceivers such as 400G-OpenZR+ that could be integrated into routers. This creates a compelling the case for converging IP layer routing and with the WDM photonic layer, in which the WDM photonic layer will offer space and wavelength multiplexing and switching. This in turn has the potential to create a significant shift in the design and operation of the network architecture by co-designing the network layer switching with the physically layer for create a photonic networking layer, able to easily implement concepts such as segment-based routing. It is anticipated moving to a converged photonic networking layer will allow for the network architecture to scale as data rates continue to grow exponentially.

7. PhD studentship with MTC: Design for Manufacturing: retrofit all UK homes in 28 years

Summary of Doctoral Project:

All of the UK’s 28 million homes must be retrofitted to the highest levels of energy performance in the 28 years remaining to deliver the UK’s legal commitment to zero emissions. A small number of expensive and slow one-off projects have demonstrated that this can be done, with Victorian buildings retrofitted to performance near to that of new Passiv Houses. However the costs of these projects has been very high and they have taken a long time. Converting from expensive one-off delivery to mass market coverage requires that we deploy the design and production skills and technologies of contemporary manufacturing to the practices of one-off small-scale construction.

10. W.D. Armstrong Studentship – Investigating the Molecular Signatures of Glioblastoma Invasion using 3D Spheroids

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Glioblastoma (GB) is a lethal brain cancer with an average survival of 14.6 months. GB is highly invasive and located within important brain structures thus limiting the extent to which surgery and radiotherapy can be utilised. The project will investigate 3D GB invasion in vitro using patient-derived low passage GB cells. The project will focus on: Characterisation of patterns of invasion with changes to the tumor microenvironment (e.g. hypoxia, nutrient deprivation, pH) using 3D cultures such as GB spheroids. Time-lapse confocal microscopy will be used to reconstruct 3D images and subsequently track individual cells and characterise their migratory phenotypes during invasion.

14. PhD Studentship in Physics – DSTL / EPSRC iCASE (Fixed Term)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM) of ingredients, as a processing method for preparing energetic material formulations, is a new and disruptive technology that has many potential benefits; in terms of the degree of blend homogeneity, the ability to work with high solid loadings, and the ability to mix in situ. One observation, attributed to the greater intimacy that is achieved during mixing compared to conventional methods, is that the cure times for some chemical reactions, such as polymerization, are not the same. Consequently, it is highly likely that the thermal and the mechanical properties of the resulting RAM mixed materials are different from their conventionally mixed counterparts.

15. PhD Studentship in Physics – AWE / EPSRC iCASE (Fixed Term)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

AWE undertake a range of small-scale safety tests on energetic materials. Data and results generated from tests are used in wide ranging applications, including material down selection, characterisation, qualification, evidence for safety cases and assessments, provision of parameters for model calibration and validation. Underlying physics of the current tests are poorly understood. Due to concerns about read-across with legacy data, tests have not kept pace with developments in diagnostic capabilities. When new results do not correspond to historic trends or expectation, existing testing capabilities are not particularly well suited to investigate causes of discrepancies. Preliminary investigations conducted at the University of Cambridge have demonstrated impact experiments instrumented to measure force-histories, direct measurement of (mechanical) energy absorbed leading up to reaction, various spectroscopies to interrogate chemical reactions that occur and their local environment.

16. PhD Studentship – Sodium-Ion Batteries

Summary of Doctoral Project:

A 4-year PhD studentship funded by the Faraday Institution is available in the research groups of Professors Dominic Wright and Clare Grey to develop new sodium electrolyte salts for next-generation sodium-ion batteries. New salts of the type NaX will be synthesised which contain a range of main group-centred anions (X; boron-, phosphorus- and silico- based). Changing the steric bulk and chain length of the organic substituents in the anions will allow us to alter the thermochemical radius of the anion and the overall physical properties of the salts themselves. In turn, this will provide the means for increased ionic conductivity and electrochemical and chemical stability, and for the formation of ionic-liquid electrolytes.

17. PhD Studentship – Lithium-Ion Batteries

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The safety and the possibility of fast charging of lithium-ion batteries are mainly limited by lithium plating on the graphite anode. A 4-year PhD studentship funded by the Faraday Institution is available in the research groups of Professors Clare Grey and Stuart Clarke to understand the impact of electrode-electrolyte interface processes on lithium plating. Specifically, the project aims to understand how graphite surface groups interact with the electrolyte molecules and facilitate the non-desired electrodeposition of lithium, and will develop new methods for the prediction and prevention of dendrite formation. The goal is to identify metal plating signatures on graphite and use the insights to improve battery safety and enable fast charging.

19. Next generation NMR techniques for decoupling flow & diffusion in porous media

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Understanding fluid flow in porous media at a hierarchy of different length scales is of fundamental importance in many areas of materials science and industrial process technology. A common measurement problem associated with understanding many of these processes is the decoupling of advective flow and diffusive motion. For example, there is a desire to acquire experimental measurements that separate diffusive and advective flow in, for example, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis which has the potential to produce carbon neutral synthetic fuels when made from green hydrogen. Our recent work1 on FT synthesis can be applied to many areas of heterogenous catalysis to better understand diffusion and mass transfer phenomena that occur within the reactor at the catalyst pellet scale. The information from magnetic resonance studies provides reaction engineers with quantitative information to optimise both reactor design and conditions.
