2. PhD Position in Medical Radiation Physics with a focus on MR-Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) measures microscopic properties in the tissue by studying random motion of water molecules. In dense tissue, diffusion is slow, while it appears to be faster in looser tissue. dMRI can therefore detect cancers that cause the tissue to be abnormally dense. Unfortunately, current dMRI methods have a poor clinical performance. This shortcoming can be remedied by performing a wider range of diffusion encoding, and thereby learning more about the tissue microstructure.

For example, we aim to distinguish properties like cell density, cell shape, cell size, blood volume, and cell membrane permeability. Once estimated, these parameters can serve as biomarkers to improve the diagnostics and monitoring of disease.

Job Assignment: The main assignment is to work within the MR physics group on the development of prostate cancer diagnostics and radiotherapy monitoring in both the clinical and pre-clinical environment. We will strive to map tissue microstructure and link it to clinically relevant biomarkers.

Moreover, we continuously work on improving our technical approach, meaning that the work can include image reconstruction, machine learning and programming of the actual MRI system. The research group has a large international collaborative network, which means that travel for planning and execution of various future collaborative projects will be encouraged.

3. PhD Position in applied Physics: X-ray imaging instrumentation

Summary of PhD Program:

X-rays have a unique ability to investigate samples in their natural state, such as cells, proteins in solution or electronic devices potentially at resolutions up to the atomic level. The advent of diffraction-limited storage rings (MAX IV) and X-ray free-electron lasers (European XFEL) have opened a whole new spectrum of applications due to their unprecedented brilliance.

This project aims to develop a novel X-ray imaging method, christened X-ray multi-projection imaging, capable of filming processes in 3D, with temporal resolution several orders of magnitude faster than up-to-date 3D X-ray imaging techniques.

In particular, the candidate will work on the development of such technique and its application to the study of cellulose fibers, a renewable biomaterial, which can replace fossil-based materials. The developed instrument will be commissioned at two of the brightest sources in the world: MAX IV and the European XFEL.

4. PhD Position in Building Physics focusing on sustainable buildings and future climate

Summary of PhD Program:

A sustainable development requires reduced use of resources for construction and heating. Thicker thermal insulation, new building parts and changed ventilation rate affect the properties of the buildings. This has sometimes resulted in moisture damage such as discoloration, mold growth, bad odors and rot. Actions to avoid these damages includes doing research that leads to updated building codes, standards and handbooks. The development of calculation tools has increased the possibilities of predicting moisture-related problems.

The doctoral project aims to support the construction industry in designing and erecting energy-efficient buildings, and renovating existing ones to new construction standards, so that the risk of moisture damage is minimized. If moisture damage is avoided, sustainable buildings are created that reduce the need for energy. In addition, resources are saved to produce materials, increases the life of the building and reduces the need for transport. It is critical to also take into account ongoing climate changes that place new demands on our buildings.

For energy performance, there are methods for developing and managing dimensioning climates that are used as boundary conditions in calculations. For moisture safety, however, there is a lack of good tools for producing dimensioning climates, this applies both to current and future climates.

The project therefore includes both studying moisture-proof solutions, which provide a sustainable construction, and developing a dimensioning climate that is used to calculate the moisture safety of the produced constructions. The main task for doctoral students is to dedicate themselves to their doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses. The duties also include participation in teaching and other institutional work, however, a maximum of 20% of the working time. Teaching takes place mainly in Swedish.

5. PhD Position in primary forest research

Summary of PhD Program:

Primary forests have many names, including pristine forests and virgin forests. They are characterized by little to no direct human impact, mainly the lack of logging. Humans use more than 75% of ice-free land globally, and pristine ecosystems have been transformed to crop lands, pastures and managed forests. Mapping, measuring and studying primary forests serves two purposes:

(1) Whilst we can increasingly detect changes in forest productivity, biomass and even mortality from space, the lack of precise land use maps means that it has been hard to determine what is natural dynamics and what is human intervention (e.g. logging, fertilization, planting). Primary forests are ideal sites to study natural processes since they are defined by little to no past and present direct human impact.

(2) How much carbon pristine forests store or the biodiversity they harbor, can be used to estimate how human land use has affected land carbon storage and biodiversity. Acquiring maps, knowledge and understanding of primary forests in a timely manner is key since old growth forests are being logged and lost at a high rate in Europe and globally. The states of primary forests are also informative for the states that could be reached when restoring ecosystems through free development protection or re-wilding.

6. PhD Position in numerical analysis

Summary of PhD Program:

The project is about so called coupled multiphysics problems, specifically the interaction of two partial differential equations across an interface. In particular, we consider environmental models involving air and water flows. Examples are atmosphere-ocean interaction within a climate model or the coupling of groundwater flows with river systems. The standard is a partitioned approach where existing codes for the subproblems are reused and they interact via the exchange of boundary information.

In this project, we design improved partitioned methods for time dependent problems, and analyze their mathematical properties. A key ingredient are so called waveform iterations. The final result of the project will be not only new/improved methods and mathematical results about their properties, but also an implementation in an open source C++ library.

9. Doctoral Student in Computer Science with focus on User-centric Code Review Tooling

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are offering one Ph.D. student position to a qualified applicant with an interest in software engineering, software technology and human-computer interaction, with funding provided by the WASP-funded DAPPER project. Code review is widely accepted as an essential part of professional software development practice and is one of the key collaborative activities that occur within teams of developers. However, despite this key role in software development and organisational practice, it is a relatively under characterised activity, especially with regard to the developer experience and to what extent tools are supporting the code review process. In our past work in this area, we have seen developers implicitly taking on different roles as code reviewers and with that they have different questions and information needs. However, despite varying reviewer needs the code review tooling is the same. DAPPER (Seamless, Tailored Code Review) is a research project with the goal of exploring how code review tooling can be made fit to purpose.

10. Doctoral student in Computer Science with specialisation in Software Engineering

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This project aims to explore software engineering methods and tools to promote trustworthy AI for cyber-physical systems (CPS). The research approach includes 1) empirical studies of industrial practice and related regulatory frameworks for AI systems, and 2) design of methods and tools to enable trustworthy AI by design. The project particularly focuses on quality assurance (QA) of machine learning (ML) systems in the context of MLOps, i.e. the combination of ML, DevOps, and Data Engineering in highly automated development pipelines. From a QA perspective, ML constitutes a paradigm shift compared to conventional software, both in its uncertainties (probabilistic rather than deterministic outcomes) and its dual dependency on data and source code. Thus, the MLOps pipelines must be composed of engineering tools that support QA accordingly. Further, we want to transfer MLOps concepts into CPS. i.e. digitally controlled physical systems, such as autonomous vehicles and robots.

12. Doctoral student in Plant Molecular Biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties, up to 20%. As plants cannot move away from adverse conditions, they have developed extensive molecular and physiological defence systems. Plants can thus respond to a range of stimuli such as pathogen infection, water availability, changes in light intensity and temperature, etc. These signalling events often involve multiple cellular organelles including mitochondria, chloroplasts, plasma membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum. The project will focus on understanding signal transduction pathways and effectors that regulate responses to changing environmental conditions and stress, with a focus on the role of plant mitochondria. Besides being important for energy conversion and metabolism, mitochondria take part in sensing and signalling that lead to effective defence responses in plants.

13. Doctoral student in Industrial Design: Reflexivity in Design

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Industrial design aspires to the creation and production of meaningful and relevant experiences and interactions with tangible and intangible objects with significance for society and the environment. Therefore, the research subject of industrial design deals with both basic and applied knowledge generation in industrial design as a phenomenon, aiming to increase the understanding of the field of design from the perspectives of epistemology and practice. The research methods and approaches of the subject span a wide field, enabling a fusion of scientific and artistic approaches to generate knowledge and explore new formats of communication. The specific PhD-candidate position in Industrial Design is being offered in the research area of Reflexivity in Design, which seeks a deeper understanding of how knowledge flows between various practices and communities within the field. Presently, there is limited meaningful integration of design scholarship and design practice, and the resulting divide between the perceived roles of design ‘theory’ and ‘practice’, presents an obstacle to mutual knowledge transfer, effective learning, and collective reflection in the field.

14. Doctoral student in environmental law

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Faculty of Law is offering one doctoral student position for a Doctor of Laws Degree within environmental law. Professor Johannes Somsen and Senior Lecturer Britta Sjöstedt are the intended supervisors. Art. 191 TFEU proclaims that EU environmental policy is in pursuit of ‘preserving, protecting and improving the quality of the environment’ and ‘protecting human health’. In the Anthropocene, however, anthropogenic forces have pushed previously stable Earth systems such as climate, water and biodiversity towards erratic states of flux, exhaustion and collapse. Lawyers and ethicists must face the difficult but vital question how ‘preserving, protecting and improving’ the environment and the right to a ‘healthy’ environment in the Anthropocene should be understood. Can or should conventional ambitions to keep humans out of nature or to restore nature to previous states survive the dynamic temporal and spatial realities that define the Anthropocene, or does ‘a safe operating space for humanity’ now imply structural human (technological) interventionism in Earth systems? How should we understand and apply pivotal terms like ‘conservation’, ‘environmental health’, and ‘natural’?
