2. PhD Position in Medical Science – Oxytocin and social behavior in zebrafish

Summary of PhD Program:

Autism spectrum disorders are characterized by problems with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment for these core symptoms. The neuropeptide oxytocin affects social behaviors in many species and it has been suggested that endogenous oxytocin may play a role in the pathophysiology of autism. Furthermore, oxytocin treatment appears to alleviate autism symptoms by increasing individuals’ social attention. The neurobiological mechanisms behind oxytocin’s effects on social interactions remain to be investigated in experimental animal models. In recent years, the research group has established behavioral models and neuroanatomical methods with which we study neuroanatomy, neuronal activity and social behavior in zebrafish. The current project aims to understand how oxytocin and other molecules influence social behaviors in zebrafish.

4. PhD Position in Odontological Science – Immune reactions in oral cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

Our adaptive and innate immunity constitute a broad defense against cancer with cytotoxic lymphocytes as key players. However, cytotoxic cells are sensitive to immune suppressive factors released by malignant and non-malignant cells in the microenvironment. The oral cavity is a very complex milieu, and even more so during malignancies and pre-malignant states. What decides if a pre-malignant state will remain benign or develop into oral cancer, is yet to be found. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the functions of cytotoxic cells in oral cancers and in pre-malignant states and how these cells are affected by other immune cells in the vicinity. The project is based on experimental in vitro research with focus on the functions and survival of human immune cells from healthy individuals or individuals with premalignant- or malignant conditions.

5. PhD Position in Medical Science – Molecular biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Mitochondria convert chemical energy into ATP by utilizing a system of molecular machines, the respiratory chain complexes. The complexes driving oxidative phosphorylation are a mosaic of proteins encoded by the nuclear and the mitochondrial DNA. Therefore, assembly of the respiratory chain and the ATPase requires not only expression and import of many nuclear encoded proteins but also translation of mitochondrially encoded proteins. The mitochondrial genetic system is responsible for replication and transcription of the mitochondrial genome and for the synthesis of a few polypeptides within the organelle.

6. PhD Position in Theory of Science with a focus on the research basis of coastal fisheries in Sweden

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral student is expected to carry out research on the following project-related theme: Coastal fisheries and research-informed policy-making. Primary research across the academic spectrum has long been summarized in research reviews, typically authored by experts in the field covered, employing no formal methods. This way of synthesizing research is routinely dismissed as unreliable and unscientific by proponents of meta-analysis and systematic reviews, which are leading formats in the area known as research synthesis. Government agencies and international organizations tasked with synthesizing research findings for policy-making purposes adopt a variety of routines, some highly formalized, some based squarely on non-formalized professional competence.

2. Doctoral position in Theory of Science with a focus on the research basis of coastal fisheries in Sweden

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Theory of Science is part of a post-Kuhnian tradition and has a distinct orientation towards empirical study. Research and teaching is primarily focused on epistemological and social aspects of the production and use of scientific knowledge. Differences in epistemological and methodological presuppositions across disciplines and fields of research are accentuated and analyzed, with the humanities and social sciences as well as medical and natural sciences being objects of study. Theories and methods are usually drawn from the field of science and technology studies (STS). Central questions concern how scientific knowledge is defined in relation to other forms of knowledge; who does research into what and why; how research communities are organized; how scientific controversies are generated and resolved; and classical epistemological questions concerning for example objectivity, rationality, realism and relativism. One important array of questions concerns the significance that expertise, standards, digital technology and various forms of professional practice have for the formation of knowledge in the intersection between academic disciplines, governmental authorities, organizations, social movements and other societal actors.

5. Doctoral student in Health Care Sciences – Person-centred measurement of symptoms in children

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Being able to assess pain through an application can strengthen a child’s participation in their own care and give them a sense of control. The e-health tool Pictorial support in person-centred care for children (PicPecc) is a newly developed application to support children in managing their symptoms. Included in PicPecc is the electronic Faces Thermometer Scale (eFTS). The application PicPecc can enable a child to self-assess symptoms, which can lead to, for example, pain being identified and treated at an early stage. It is important to use validated pain assessment instruments and a person-centred approach for early identification and management of symptoms during the child’s illness trajectory. The overall purpose of this doctoral project is two folded. The first purpose is to validate the psychometric properties of the eFTS when assessing pain. The second purpose is to adapt PicPecc for the management of symptoms in children with CNS tumours who have undergone surgery. An inclusive research design is used, which means that children, parents and care staff are part of a reference group together with the researchers so that they are involved in decision-making processes. Data collection methods include self-assessments, interviews, workshops and surveys for children, parents and caregivers. Data are analysed using qualitative and quantitative methods for psychometry, as well as the development and testing of complex interventions.

6. Doctoral student in Health Care Sciences – Person-centred learning

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Like all government agencies, universities must contribute to the development of society. The universities’ specific mission is to create socially sound knowledge and educate students so that they, in turn, can start utilizing the knowledge and skills in their forthcoming profession. However, knowledge about person- centred care (PCC) is inadequately described in governing documents and knowledge and skills about PCC are unevenly distributed among teachers in higher education. Thus, this project wants to contribute with an increased knowledge about, and a practical guidance in how teachers could support students to develop competence in PCC. The objective is to co-create an educational module for PCC which aims to support teaching and learning of PCC in higher education.

7. Doctoral student in Health Care Sciences – University students’ preparation

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The health science education programs aim to develop students’ theoretical, emotional and practical skills. Therefore, students at Sahlgrenska Academy are offered teaching at a clinical training centre (CTC) and clinical practice education (CPE). However, it is currently insufficiently studied how the educational programs can prepare students for practical elements and patient meetings during CTC and CPE. Furthermore, a lack of knowledge can increase the risk that students feel insecure and uncertain about the practical work during CPE. Therefore, knowledge is needed about which learning models can effectively prepare students. Objective: To explore whether peer learning and virtual patients promote student learning within the framework of practical education at the clinical training centre and whether peer learning and virtual patients increase students’ preparation for and during clinical practice education. Implementation.

8. Doctoral student in Odontological Science – Treatment of peri-implantitis

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Peri-implantitis is a pathological condition occurring in patients with dental implants. It is characterized by inflammation in peri-implant tissues and loss of supporting bone. Moderate and severe forms of peri-implantitis occur in about 15% of patients with dental implants and treatment of the condition is demanding, both technically and in terms of resources. Treatment approaches are based on removal of bacterial biofilm from implant components. The use of air-polishing with glycine powder is a promising method for surface decontamination, balancing the risk for surface damage with cleaning efficacy.

9. Doctoral student in Medical Science – Developmental biology and stem cells

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Half of all childhood cancers have a suspected prenatal origin. Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) can differentiate in vitro into most cell lineages, and thus represent a promising tool to dissect the molecular mechanisms of malignant transformation taking place in prenatal cell populations. Specifically, this project is focused on modelling the development of the blood system using hPSCs, and on harnessing this model to interrogate molecular events leading to the emergence of pre-leukemic clones. Modelling developmental hematopoiesis constitutes a particular challenge, as the hematopoietic system develops from endothelial precursors through successive waves, in multiple anatomical locations and time-points. The mechanisms regulating the emergence and diversity of these successive embryonic blood progenitors are still unclear. The overall goal of this proposal is to bridge current in vitro models of human embryonic development with the latest progress in developmental hematopoiesis studied in vivo. Ultimately, this work will pave the way for bioengineering of clinically relevant cell types, for molecular studies of human disease, and for novel drug discovery platforms.

12. Doctoral student in Natural Science, specializing in Biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The main purpose is to transform saline soil into productive soil to fight poverty and hunger. Soil salinization is a serious and increasing problem. Globally ca 500 million ha are affected with reduced yields as a consequence. In some areas, the situation is so severe that the land is left fallow. This cause economic consequences. To turn saline soil into productive soil we need to e.g. develop saline tolerant varieties, in our case wheat. Bangladesh is a country with major challenges caused by the ongoing climate change. Starting from a local Bangladesh wheat variety, BARI Gom-25, we created a mutant population to increase the genetic variation. Via analysis for salt tolerance we identified 70 wheat lines with high salt tolerance from our mutant population. The next step is to use these lines to implement and develop sustainable food production in Bangladesh on salinized soil.
