9. PhD position “Energy Hubs for Integration of Large-scale renewable Energy: Modelling

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Increasing decentralized power production from wind and solar are putting a strain on the capacity of the electricity grid in different parts of the Netherlands. Consequently, new projects cannot be connected to the grid preventing growth of renewable energy production. Also, when power demand is exceeding the transport capacity, an extra alternative electricity flow is needed to fulfil the power demand. This could be solved by increasing capacity: grid expansion. However, this is expensive and takes years of time to be realized. Although grid expansion is inevitable in the long term, a solution is needed for a short/medium term. If the copper route (i.e. reinforcing the grid by adding more cabled) is not a viable option anymore, then an alternative route through conversion to energy carrying molecules can be a solution. For this purpose we need major breakthroughs, advanced technologies and new integrated renewable energy systems for the energy hubs. Such an energy hub is a place where different forms of sustainable generation, storage and conversion come together to ensure a reliable supply of clean energy to customers in its surrounding.

6. PhD in understanding the current state of cybersecurity with the help of macro and micro level indicators

Summary of Doctoral Project:

A rational security decision at the firm level should result in maximum organizational utility. Unfortunately, security managers need to constantly take decisions under uncertain circumstances and constrained budgets in order to make their organizations cyber safe. It is hard for decision makers to determine on how and how much to invest in security without understanding it’s expected future benefits or to comment on whether or not to pay the ransom after a breach of their IT systems without knowing their alternatives.

8. PhD opening in Understanding and modelling lower shoreface sand transport

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Are you interested in setting up innovative model solutions to better understand lower shoreface sand transport and thus contribute to a climate-proof coast? At the Water Engineering & Management department we are looking for a PhD researcher to strengthen our team. We are an active and dynamic group of researchers pioneering in the modelling and engineering of marine and fluvial systems. Alongside another PhD student and a postdoc, you will be one of the researchers in the MELODY project: ModEling LOwer Shoreface Seabed DYnamics for a Climate-Proof Coast. Recently funded by the Dutch Research Council, MELODY aims to better understand sand transport and morphodynamics at the lower shoreface. This zone forms the essential link between the offshore seabed and the nearshore zone, thus controlling how climate change, and the activities to cope with it, affect our coast.

9. PhD position Capture, storage and mineralization of CO2 in particle

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The goal of the PhD project is to develop a method for the fast, permanent and safe storage of CO2 in solid particles (e.g. porous silica, clays or mineral carbonates) suspended in aqueous salt solutions. The efficiency of the initial CO2 capture depends on the fluid composition (ions, pH and other organic/inorganic additives), the gas partial pressures, and the influence of these variables will be studied at ambient temperature. Conversion of captured CO2 to carbonate minerals at variable fluid composition, elevated temperature and pressure will be optimized using an autoclave microreactor and/or microfluidic chips that also mimic the pore geometry of potential storage media (e.g. reservoir rock).

10. PhD candidate position: Scaling friction from single grain to aggregate grain

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Department Mechanics of Solids, Surfaces & Systems (MS3), part of the faculty of Engineering Technology (ET) is currently seeking a PhD candidate in the area of modelling friction in crushed rock grains (gouge) in reservoir faults. The work will be done in the Surface Technology and Maintenance (SEM) group, where we work on topics related to surfaces and interfaces, damage and failure mechanisms, e.g. frictional failure in faults leading to earthquakes. Earthquakes reflect the phenomenon of sudden slip when the frictional strength of faults in the Earth’s crust is overcome. This project seeks to understand the physical processes controlling this sudden failure through numerical modelling and lab experiments and applying the results to acquire large-scale models for earthquakes caused by gas extraction, geothermal energy production and subsurface storage.

How to Write Motivation Letter for PhD Program?

11. PhD position on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning for Personal Agents

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Digital information technology is increasingly interwoven with our society and individuals’ daily lives. With these digital technologies tracking and influencing our everyday behavior, they should align with the user’s needs and values. To achieve this, personal agents need to model the user’s informational and motivational attitudes such as goals, values, norms, beliefs, and their interrelations in order to derive support actions that are aligned with the user. This is challenging because 1) user models need to be understandable to and modifiable by the user, 2) conflicts may occur in the user’s motivations, and 3) the user’s state and motivations may change over time and in different contexts. Techniques from the area of knowledge representation & reasoning (KRR) and in particular non-monotonic reasoning (NMR) offer a promising approach for addressing these challenges as they are in principle easier to explain, and designed for dealing with conflicting and dynamic information.

12. PhD position on understanding the melting dynamics in turbulent flows

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Melting, dissolving, and erosion are processes that are frequently found in nature and technology. Contrary to common believe these three processes do not always smooth the surface, but rather form structures and sometimes even sharpen the surface. This leeds to the formation of e.g. ice scallops and pinnacles, for some examples of patterning and roughening. The continuously changing shape of e.g. a melting iceberg and its interaction with the external turbulence is very complicated as it involves three boundary layers: kinetic, thermal, and solutal (due to the salt concentration). The interaction between those boundary layers is highly complex and not understood. In particular, what is the effect of the surface roughness on the melting rate? The aim is to experimentally study the interaction of these boundary layers in a controlled lab environment such as to increase our understanding of these phenomena and their relevance on e.g. the melting rate of ice of icebergs and (tidal) glaciers, all important in view of global warming and precision required in technological applications.

13. PhD position on integrating safety and cybersecurity through stochastic model

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The main objective of the ERC-funded project CAESAR is to marry the historically separated fields of safety (no disruption due to unintended failures) and security (no malicious attacks). Despite their historic separation, safety and security are heavily intertwined. A simple example: locking your door at night, is great for security against burglars, but bad for safety in case of fire. The Formal Methods and Tools (FMT) research group has an opening for a PhD student. You will be working on the ERC-funded project CAESAR: integrating safety and cybersecurity through stochastic model checking.
