10. PhD Position in Economic History, within Uppsala University’s graduate programme in medical humanities

Summary of PhD Program:

Laboratories of the future? Complex buildings, flexible organizations and the research and education of life science. While research and education within the field of biomedicine are constantly evolving, they must be housed in capital-intensive, permanent physical infrastructure. Beginning in the latter part of the 20th century, notions of ‘flexible buildings’ have therefore developed alongside new ideals of ‘flexible organizations’. The purpose of this PhD project is to investigate the historical development, and consequences of, this dynamic relationship: between the ways in which biomedical research and education have been organised, and the physical environments constructed and adapted for such pursuits. It is proposed that the focus of such a study would consist of analysing the planning, funding, adaptations and uses of the laboratory facilities at Uppsala Biomedical Centre (1966-).

17. PhD Position in systematic biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The Burki lab was recently awarded an ERC Consolidator grant (PlastidOrigin) that aims to study one of the most transformative events in eukaryote evolution–the origin of the photosynthetic organelles (the primary plastids). The main aims of this PhD position are to study the roles of genetic transfers in the integration of an endosymbiont into an organelle. For this we will study the lineage Paulinella–a lineage of amoebae (unicellular eukaryotes) that established primary plastids relatively recently. While most of the research on Paulinella has been done on the photosynthetic species, i.e. the species that diverged after the establishment of plastids, we will instead look at the heterotrophic species that diverged close but before plastid establishment to test the hypothesis that gene transfers facilitating the endosymbiotic integration occurred before the establishment of the plastids from varying food sources. A suite of methods will be employed, including long-read metabarcoding, transcriptomics, phylogenomics, cultivation, microscopy.

1. PhD student in Computing Science on the topic of efficient and provably correct execution environments

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Managed languages (such as Java, Python, R and JavaScript) allow a high level of programming abstraction which allows rapid application development with fewer errors, in particular by presenting programmers with an abstract view of memory that can be managed automatically by the runtime system (aka execution environment). The efficiency of the algorithms at the core of runtime systems for managing memory, scheduling, etc. are imperative for the performance of managed languages. The strive for efficiency drives up complexity of the algorithms, stressing the need for a rigorous process for verifying their correctness. This project aims to develop efficient algorithms for key aspects of runtime systems related to memory management, task scheduling, compiler optimisations for specific runtimes with a strong focus on their formal verification. Thus, this project requires an understanding of and interest in both low-level aspects of program execution as well as mathematical underpinnings of verifying of algorithms operating at a low-level. There exist a wide range of interesting challenges to work on in the context of some specific runtime systems.

How to Write Motivation Letter for PhD Program?

11. PhD student in experimental hadron physics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The main physics interests of the Uppsala group are studies of hyperons – three-quark systems just like the protons but where one or several of the light quarks are replaced by one or several heavier quarks, e.g. strange quarks. By studying how hyperons are produced and how they decay, we can measure their internal structure at the femtometer level – that is, distances of 10-15 m! In this way, we gain insights into how the strong interaction bind quarks into the systems we are made of. Our group has recently taken the first “snapshot” of the creation of a hyperon and an antihyperon from the energy produced in an electron-positron collision. The next step is to reconstruct the full process. Electron-positron collider experiments such as BESIII and the Belle II experiment in Japan are excellently suited for this purpose.

14. PhD student in Physics with specialization in Physics Education Research

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PhD student will investigate conceptual, procedural and epistemological challenges that accompany upper division physics courses (courses beyond the introductory year of studies, such as statistical mechanics, relativity, quantum mechanics, analytical mechanics, optics, etc.) taken by physics, engineering and upper-secondary-school teacher students. This area of research is relatively under-researched in comparison with introductory physics courses, particularly mechanics and thus offers valuable opportunities for novel research and curriculum development. Upper division courses often involve more abstract and advanced mathematical tools and students can rely less on their every-day experiences and intuition, which presents a significant challenge for learning. The PhD student will, among other things, investigate ways in which students make sense when solving problems in these courses. To do this, they will learn and employ a multimodal approach to studying student meaning making which has been developed at UUPER in the recent decades.

18. PhD student in geohydrology / environmental chemistry / biogeochemistry

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PhD student will work with microbial degradation of PFAS for remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater within the research project bioPFAS. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are extremely difficult to degrade at the same time as many of these substances are both harmful to human health and mobile in the environment. PFAS are or have been used in numerous products and constitute a growing environmental problem. In 2021, more than half of Sweden’s municipalities reported that they have PFAS in the raw water for drinking water production. At the same time PFAS continues to leak out into the environment from contaminated sites such as fire-fighting training areas and landfills. Natural degradation is an important process for the removal of many organic contaminant from the environment. So far, however, the natural degradation of PFAS all the way to non-toxic (completely de-fluorinated) end products has been deemed very slow or maybe not even possible, but on the other hand there is a lack of knowledge about the degradation processes and the organisms involved.

21. PhD position in diabetes epidemiology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Type 2 diabetes is an important public health challenge, which results in considerable morbidity and premature mortality. Despite known socioeconomic inequalities in type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality, little is known about the relationship between socioeconomic position and complications of type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, how high-resolution, longitudinal trajectories of lifestyle and clinical risk factors are related to complications of type 2 diabetes is unclear, and if the addition of longitudinal risk factor trajectories can enhance prediction of complications of type 2 diabetes, or explain socioeconomic inequalities in complications of type 2 diabetes is unknown. The aim of this project is to address these gaps in knowledge using high-quality, long-term data from the Swedish National Diabetes Register, in linkage with other national registers and cutting-edge methodologies in epidemiology and artificial intelligence, including group-based trajectory modelling, causal mediation analysis, and machine learning based risk prediction modelling.

1. Up to 2 PhD positions Computer Systems focusing on Security at the Architectural Level

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The project focuses on memory protection that is becoming more critical as with the expansion of Non-Volatile memory technologies, a large amount of sensitive information is left exposed in mobile or Internet-of-Things devices, even when they are switched off. Today, implementations of a small set of fundamental concepts for encrypted (secure or protected) memory are commercially available but it is widely recognized that they come at a great performance and energy cost (e.g., over 3× slowdowns). For this reason, the applicability of memory protection is limited and reserved for specialized situations. This project aims to address this critical deficiency by exploring a range of architectural techniques to ameliorate the cost of protecting memory, with an ultimate goal of making memory protection accessible to a wider range of systems and applications. More broadly this project aims to improve the safety of our digital lives.

15. Doctoral student position in environmental law with an interdisciplinary focus

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The doctoral student position takes place within VR-funded research environment 2020-04973 which proposes to combine law and conservation to help develop solutions to the biodiversity crisis. Most of the world’s nations have enacted environmental legal instruments to avert species extinctions. However, these legal instruments do not appear to be able to stop that crisis. Countries are consistently failing to meet agreed targets to reduce the loss of biodiversity. This failure raises the question of whether existing legal instruments, theories and methods are fit for the purpose of protecting species, populations and ecosystems and whether and how their effectiveness can be improved. The purpose of our research is therefore to develop a theoretical and applied understanding of the interplay between legal and ecological systems and document, analyze, model and improve our understanding of how law and conservation affect each other, with the goal of improving the ability of the law to conserve species. The legal topics that will be addressed in this research environment include ecological tort (“préjudice écologique”), public interest environmental litigation, rights of nature, and environmental constitutionalism.
