The PGI-7 is involved in a Marie-Curie training network “Materials for Neuromorphic Circuits” (MANIC) (https://etnmanic.eu/) that is aiming to synthesize materials that can function as networks of neurons and synapses by integrating conductivity, plasticity and self-organization. Within MANIC, the PGI-7 offers a PhD project that aims to engineer the synaptic plasticity of epitaxial and polycrystalline memristive oxide thin film devices from short-term plasticity to long-term potentiation. This so called metaplasticity inherent to biological systems will be employed to implement different types of learning algorithms.

SiCf/SiC Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) have long been considered for use in high temperature applications within the gas turbine engine. Their specific strength and ability to operate at high temperatures provides the potential to increase gas turbine engine operation temperatures which results in improved fuel efficiencies and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. A further benefit is that in comparison to the current nickel-based superalloys which are typically employed in high temperature applications within the gas turbine engine, the need for complex cooling regimes is not required. Nonetheless, for CMCs to fulfil their potential a holistic understanding is required not just of the CMC material itself but also their interactions with existing gas turbine components. Model-based security testing has the potential to provide for systematic testing and evaluation of implementations. Security testing of embedded systems (as part of an increasing real-world need for IoT evaluation and certification) is increasingly being adopted in a number of sectors. Birds routinely fly in gusty conditions and close to obstacles, both of which challenge small engineered air vehicles. There is, therefore, significant potential for bio-inspiration to improve and optimise the design of urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles. Recent studies have shown how gliding birds reduce the effect of vertical gusts, but understanding how flapping fliers respond to streamwise gusts and turbulence remains an important knowledge gap with potential applications to aircraft. This ambitious interdisciplinary project will address this, using high-speed cameras, PIV, a motion-capture system and an onboard inertial measurement unit to characterise how birds respond to streamwise gusts and turbulence during flapping flight. Following this, the aim will be to investigate how bird responses to gusts and turbulence can be applied to conventional wings or rotors and to quantify the aerodynamic effects generated with these implementations.

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) measures microscopic properties in the tissue by studying random motion of water molecules. In dense tissue, diffusion is slow, while it appears to be faster in looser tissue. dMRI can therefore detect cancers that cause the tissue to be abnormally dense. Unfortunately, current dMRI methods have a poor clinical performance. This shortcoming can be remedied by performing a wider range of diffusion encoding, and thereby learning more about the tissue microstructure.

For example, we aim to distinguish properties like cell density, cell shape, cell size, blood volume, and cell membrane permeability. Once estimated, these parameters can serve as biomarkers to improve the diagnostics and monitoring of disease.

Job Assignment: The main assignment is to work within the MR physics group on the development of prostate cancer diagnostics and radiotherapy monitoring in both the clinical and pre-clinical environment. We will strive to map tissue microstructure and link it to clinically relevant biomarkers.

Moreover, we continuously work on improving our technical approach, meaning that the work can include image reconstruction, machine learning and programming of the actual MRI system. 3. PhD Position in applied Physics: X-ray imaging instrumentation

X-rays have a unique ability to investigate samples in their natural state, such as cells, proteins in solution or electronic devices potentially at resolutions up to the atomic level. The advent of diffraction-limited storage rings (MAX IV) and X-ray free-electron lasers (European XFEL) have opened a whole new spectrum of applications due to their unprecedented brilliance.

A sustainable development requires reduced use of resources for construction and heating. Thicker thermal insulation, new building parts and changed ventilation rate affect the properties of the buildings. This has sometimes resulted in moisture damage such as discoloration, mold growth, bad odors and rot. Actions to avoid these damages includes doing research that leads to updated building codes, standards and handbooks. The development of calculation tools has increased the possibilities of predicting moisture-related problems.

The doctoral project aims to support the construction industry in designing and erecting energy-efficient buildings, and renovating existing ones to new construction standards, so that the risk of moisture damage is minimized. If moisture damage is avoided, sustainable buildings are created that reduce the need for energy. In addition, resources are saved to produce materials, increases the life of the building and reduces the need for transport. It is critical to also take into account ongoing climate changes that place new demands on our buildings.

For energy performance, there are methods for developing and managing dimensioning climates that are used as boundary conditions in calculations. For moisture safety, however, there is a lack of good tools for producing dimensioning climates, this applies both to current and future climates.

The project therefore includes both studying moisture-proof solutions, which provide a sustainable construction, and developing a dimensioning climate that is used to calculate the moisture safety of the produced constructions. The main task for doctoral students is to dedicate themselves to their doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses. The duties also include participation in teaching and other institutional work, however, a maximum of 20% of the working time. Teaching takes place mainly in Swedish.

Summary of PhD Program:

Primary forests have many names, including pristine forests and virgin forests. They are characterized by little to no direct human impact, mainly the lack of logging. Humans use more than 75% of ice-free land globally, and pristine ecosystems have been transformed to crop lands, pastures and managed forests. Mapping, measuring and studying primary forests serves two purposes:

(1) Whilst we can increasingly detect changes in forest productivity, biomass and even mortality from space, the lack of precise land use maps means that it has been hard to determine what is natural dynamics and what is human intervention (e.g. logging, fertilization, planting). Primary forests are ideal sites to study natural processes since they are defined by little to no past and present direct human impact.

(2) How much carbon pristine forests store or the biodiversity they harbor, can be used to estimate how human land use has affected land carbon storage and biodiversity. Acquiring maps, knowledge and understanding of primary forests in a timely manner is key since old growth forests are being logged and lost at a high rate in Europe and globally. Efficient algorithms for complex personnel scheduling problems are critical for ensuring organisations can provide a suitably qualified workforce at minimal cost while satisfying a wide variety of strict regulations meeting occupational health and safety requirements, as well as employee preferences.

This PhD project will focus on nurse rostering, where nurses must be optimally allocated to work shifts in a manner that ensures their specialised expertise is available when required to support scheduled surgeries and other activities, while satisfying rules about shift lengths, leave days, and accommodating as much as possible their individual preferences.

The University of Melbourne has strong expertise in tackling related scheduling problems, but will benefit enormously from the specific expertise of the KU Leuven team developed over several decades in advancing models and algorithms for the nurse rostering problem. In the steel production process, two important ingredients are combined: pig iron (or crude iron) and scrap (recycled metal materials). Depending on the scrap quality, which is determined by the concentration of impurities such as sulfur, the amount of scrap going into a single production batch can be adjusted. In this Ph.D. project, the candidate will investigate new technologies for sensing coatings with the application in shoe insoles to design flexible electronics to sense and detect excess local pressures.

The design and development of sensing coatings and electronics is very challenging as pressures need to be measured with high sensitivity at a high load. Graphene-based sensors have shown a lot of promise in achieving this. The candidate will therefore investigate how graphene-based sensors can be applied in coatings in shoe insoles to meet the sensing requirements.

Furthermore, the candidate will need to design energy-efficient and accurate electronics and software to detect these pressures. Furthermore, the candidate will also design a custommade and energy-efficient electronics to capture signals from this sensor. The candidate will work in the context of the ORTEADA project and will join a multidisciplinary team of professors with various backgrounds and 2 other Ph.D. students. Summary of PhD Program:

Advanced control strategies, and model predictive control (MPC) in particular, are gaining widespread interest for building climate control, since they can systematically save energy and/or costs with simultaneous thermal comfort improvement, as well as adapt the energy demand according to the available renewable/residual supply.

MPC however suffers from (1) parametric uncertainties, which are uncertainties that can be decreased (though not fully eliminated) by adaptation improvement of model parameter (e.g., through learning), and (2) additive uncertainties (such as forecast uncertainty) that cannot be substantially decreased but that can be dealt with in the decision-making process. These substantially limit the performance of MPC approaches.

Several computational methods to handle uncertainties in mathematical models have recently been developed at NUMA; for example, quasi-Monte Carlo methods in forward uncertainty quantification for PDEs with random diffusion coefficients. Quasi-Monte Carlo methods are multivariate quadrature methods which are especially suitable for higher dimensional integrals/expectations, having the possibility of vanquishing the curse of dimensionality under certain conditions.

Nowadays, Lithium-Ion batteries are inevitable in our daily life. But still, safety hazards remain an issue and incidents of burning electric vehicles and laptops are reported. Solid state electrolytes provide the option to increase not only the safety, but also the long term stability and energy density. The challenge in solid state batteries are the interfaces, as a solid-solid contact is more difficult to maintain during cycling.

The interfaces are exposed to mechanical stress but also chemical reactions and diffusion may occur. In the framework of the US-German project „Interfaces and Interphases in Rechargeable Li Based Batteries: Cathode/Solid Electrolyte – Phase 2 ” (CatSE²) the influence of “internal” (grain boundaries) and “external” (Solid Electrolyte – Cathode) interfaces on the ionic conductivity should be evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

The correlation to microscopic investigations including diffraction to evaluate the local crystallographic structure and spectroscopic techniques for local chemical analysis (Energy dispersive X-ray Spectrocops (EDS) and Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (EELS)). If possible microscopic impedance of selected interfaces will reveal, how the structure and chemistry at the interfaces influences the ion transfer. The analysis of pristine and cycled cells should reveal the origin for the degradation of the electrochemical performance and yield to the development of more powerful solid state batteries.

Summary of PhD Program:

The PGI-7 is involved in a Marie-Curie training network “Materials for Neuromorphic Circuits” (MANIC) (https://etnmanic.eu/) that is aiming to synthesize materials that can function as networks of neurons and synapses by integrating conductivity, plasticity and self-organization. Within MANIC, the PGI-7 offers a PhD project that aims to engineer the synaptic plasticity of epitaxial and polycrystalline memristive oxide thin film devices from short-term plasticity to long-term potentiation.

This so called metaplasticity inherent to biological systems will be employed to implement different types of learning algorithms. The plasticity will be modified by the interplay of thin film processing conditions (defects, interfaces) and the sequence of electrical stimuli. The project should clarify the interplay between pristine microstructure, filament formation, dynamics of oxygen vacancy movement and synaptic plasticity. The memristive devices will finally be co-integrated into a neuromorphic CMOS chip designed at Bielefeld University.

Urban basement construction is an increasingly challenging and high-risk activity. The immune system plays a critical role in many different aspects of cancer. Some immune cells are efficient at detecting and killing tumour cells, while in other instances inflammation is the underlying cause of cancer. Our lab is focused on a newly discovered group of immune cells, called innate lymphoid cells (ILC). Importantly, we have discovered that ILC have potent immune-regulatory properties that are likely to be critical in tumourigenesis. Our lab integrates machine learning and high-throughput biochemistry to study how proteins selectively recognise their substrates, how this process is perturbed in cancer and how it can be hijacked to find highly selective and mutant-specific drugs to overcome drug resistance. Aberrant protein kinase-driven signaling causally contributes to cancer and, in consequence, protein kinases are major targets for cancer therapeutics.

The lab exploits both chemistry and biology to address fundamental mechanisms of genome function. While many genetic determinants of cancer are known, alternative nucleic acid secondary structures and chemically modified DNA (or RNA) bases can be epigenetic features of nucleic acids that are important to normal biology and in oncogenesis. In pancreatic cancer, cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) have been shown to promote tumour growth, therapy resistance and immunosuppression by secreting ligands and extracellular matrix proteins. Research within the Gilbertson laboratory uses novel genetically engineered mouse models and patient derived orthotopic xenografts of brain tumours to develop and test curative treatments for children with these rare tumours. The genetic information of eukaryotic cells is packaged into chromatin. Key to this process are histone proteins that are subject to various post-translational modifications.
