7. Doctoral student in biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The goal of the PhD project is to address the role of gene expression in hybridization derived novelty. It has long been known that hybrids can have phenotypes that are transgressive, more extreme than those of both parental species, in spite of having intermediate genomes. In this project we will investigate if hybridization can give rise to novel gene expression profiles. The project will investigate to which extent novel, transgressive patterns of gene expression that are more extreme compared to both parent species, are found in old hybrid lineages of the Italian sparrow. The Italian sparrows were formed by a hybridization ca. 5000 years ago. It will also investigate if the genes that will have novel patterns of gene expression in the hybrid species can be predicted based on their regulatory basis, the network they belong to and their function.

11. PhD student in neurology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the underlying brain amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau pathologies and ensuing neurodegeneration can be reliably detected and monitored using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and imaging biomarkers. The CSF and imaging biomarkers have been successfully used in research settings and in specialized clinics in some countries. However, more accessible and inexpensive methods, like blood tests, are needed for widespread applicability in clinical trials as well as for future implementation in routine clinical care. We have recently published several papers suggesting that phosphorylated tau measured in blood may be a useful diagnostic and prognostic biomarker of AD (Palmqvist et al. JAMA, 2020; Janelidze et al. Nature Medicine, 2020; Cullen et al. Nature Aging, 2021).

The work duties will also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%). The activities of proteins in our cells are orchestrated to a large extent by chemical modifications catalyzed by specific signaling enzymes. A modification called ADP-ribosylation is catalyzed by 17 human PARP enzymes; pathogenic bacteria express toxins that catalyze the same modification of human proteins to shortwire crucial processes in their host cells. Both PARP enzymes and toxins are interesting from a pharmacological point of view. Despite rapid progress during the past decade, it is yet unclear how the ADP-ribosylating enzymes and toxins are regulated.

15. Doctoral student in water and carbon cycles at the catchment scale

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) is an important water quality parameter that affects the fate and dynamics of other pollutants in the aquatic environment. The DOC concentrations in many surface waters across the northern hemisphere, particularly in Sweden, have increased during last decades. Increasing DOC concentrations have important consequences for the ecology and biogeochemistry of freshwaters. Therefore, there is an urgent need for improving our understanding of spatial-temporal variabilities (dynamics) of DOC concentrations in surface waters and the processes that drive DOC dynamics; such understanding is essential for improving our ability to predict impacts of future climate and environmental change (e.g. land use change, forest and agricultural management practices) on DOC in order to support decision-making for sustainable catchment management and planning.

21. Doctoral student in Biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Soil microorganisms are responsible for the long-term sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems, due to their role in breaking down organic matter which regulates the soil-atmosphere carbon balance, and the release of plant-limiting nutrients to fuel productivity. Despite the fundamental importance of this decomposition process, it remains unclear how carbon and nutrient mineralization in soils are linked. The overarching aim of this PhD project is to identify how microbial demand for limiting resources determines the balance between carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus release in soils. The outcome of this project will increase our capacity to predict ecosystem responses to changes in resource availability, as well as how microorganisms may be managed to optimize soil carbon sequestration and fertility.
