1. PhD Position in Biochemistry

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Your studies in Biochemistry will be in the project: “Nuclear membrane proteins in chromatin organization, cell differentiation and cancer”. The cell nucleus is surrounded by a nuclear membrane containing a large number of unique membrane proteins. The repertoire of nuclear membrane proteins varies during development and differentiation of different tissues. Nuclear membrane proteins play important roles in the organization of chromatin and control of gene expression. Especially during cell differentiation, major chromatin reorganizations take place. Disorganized chromatin is associated with aging and human diseases, such as cancer. In fact, the cell differentiation state and associated chromatin organization have major impact on cancer progression and patient prognosis. The aim of the project is to identify and investigate nuclear membrane proteins involved in chromatin organization, using a combination of modern recombinant DNA techniques, cell culture, advanced microscopy and quantitative image analysis.

6. PhD Position in Neurochemistry (A)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In this project, you will apply electrophysiology to determine the intrinsic membrane properties of hypothalamic neurons, how they connect to each other, and how these features are subject to plasticity as the system adapts to physiological changes and challenges. The system will be studied in organotypic culture and ex vivo brain slices; in vivo recordings may also be included. In addition, anatomical techniques (e.g. immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, reconstruction of filled neurons) will be applied to understand the structural substrate of network interactions. Prior experience in the above techniques, especially patch clamp electrophysiology and organotypic cultures of brain tissue, is a strong advantage (please include documentation). Training in the principles of neuronal networks and knowledge of the organization and function of the neuroendocrine system is also a considerable merit. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

7. PhD Position in Neurochemistry (B)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The laboratory of Dr. Marek Bartosovic studies epigenetic programs underlying gene expression changes during development and in disease. We have previously developed new technologies to investigate the epigenome at the single-cell resolution and also pioneered high resolution spatially-resolved epigenomics on the DBiT platform. We also use cutting-edge molecular techniques such as scATAC-seq, CUT&Run, HiChIP, HiC, massive parallel reporter assay and genome/epigenome editing using CRISPR/Cas9 in order to understand the causal relationship between the epigenome and the transcriptome. We combine the wet lab approaches with deep bioinformatic analysis of the obtained data.

9. PhD Position in Physical Geography: Coupled hydromechanical modelling of fractures in bedrock

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The doctoral research will be conducted within the framework of a project on modelling coupled hydromechanical analysis of rock stress, permeability and transmissivity changes caused by tunnel excavation in heterogeneous discrete fracture networks for quantification of groundwater leakage. Groundwater flow in crystalline rock occurs through fractures and deformation zones. Understanding these flows and how they change subject to excavation is important for assessing environmental impacts. This project will study changes in the stress field in the excavation disturbed zone and how that impacts fracture aperture and permeability as well as the effects it has on groundwater flow in the surrounding rock.

13. PhD Position in Bioinformatics (1-2)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Protein structure is essential for understanding their function as well as for developing drugs targeting proteins. Recently, a deep learning method that can predict the structure of most proteins was made freely available, and a database with predicted structure was released. However, proteins do not act alone – they act together with other proteins. Therefore, the next major challenge is to use these types of methods for predicting protein-protein interactions. Initial studies from us have shown that it is possible to predict accurate structures of a large part of dimeric proteins using either a modified version of AlphaFold2 or AlphaFold-multimer. However, there are still many proteins that cannot be built accurately, nor are we able always to distinguish interacting from non-interacting protein pairs and to build larger complexes accurately is still an unsolved problem.

1. PhD student in Physical Geography: Coastal meadows – habitats on the move

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Coastal meadows around the Baltic Sea are a result of land uplift and grazing. In the past there were vast areas of well-connected coastal meadow but today only a fraction remain grazed by livestock. Coastal meadows will become smaller and more isolated when they are squeezed between rising sea levels and other land-covers in the near future, with detrimental effects on biodiversity. This project focuses on geographical analysis of historical data, topography and future sea level projection to estimate how much coastal meadow that have been lost the past 100 years and will be lost until year 2100, and how the losses affects biodiversity patterns at local and regional scales. The project focuses on plant communities but can also include other trophic levels. How much coastal meadows and where along the coastline will be needed to protect biodiversity for the future? Can we, together with stakeholders, identify suitable areas for restoration to optimise biodiversity preservation and climate mitigation?

3. PhD student in Marine Geology: Numerical ice-sheet modelling of the North Greenland Ice Sheet

Summary of Doctoral Project:

North Greenland is one of the least explored regions on Earth. In this remote region, feedbacks between the cryosphere, the ocean and the atmosphere can locally amplify environmental impacts and ecosystem changes driven by climate change. This amplification may have a direct impact on global ocean and climate conditions, including sea-level rise from mass-loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet. To tackle these outstanding questions, The North Greenland Earth-Ocean-Ecosystem Observatory (GEOEO) has been initiated as a broad research theme, adopted by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, to develop a fundamental understanding of the cryosphere’s dynamic history and response to climate change, including implications for marine and terrestrial ecosystems in North Greenland and the adjacent Arctic Ocean. The field component of GEOEO involves a novel expedition to North Greenland with the Swedish icebreaker Oden in 2024, the North of Greenland 2024 Expedition.

17. PhD student in Physical Geography: Managing grasslands for biodiversity and climate

Summary of Doctoral Project:

To preserve biodiversity and to mitigate climate change are two crucial aims identified by UNs sustainable development goals (SDG). However, achievingboth of these goals in practice can be difficult, as there may be conflicts between them when it comes to practical landscape management. In this project, the candidate will focus on ancient species-rich grasslands, as a part of the agricultural system, to investigate how biodiversity can be maintained without negative effects on the climate. Today there is only a fraction of ancient grasslands left where livestock is still grazing and functional connectivity is therefore a fundemental part of the preservation of biodiversity. Two key questions in the project are: 1) how should the grasslands be manged to conserve biodiversity and mitigate climate change? and 2) how many grasslands and where are these needed to preserve biodivsity for the future? The project is planned to be conducted mainly in Sweden.
