3. PhD in Biological Physics of Behaviour

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The network-forming slime mould Physarum polycephalum is renowned for solving complex tasks despite its simple make-up consisting of only one giant cell that harbors millions of cell nuclei. You will investigate the role of nuclei as information processors and how nuclei dynamics coordinate solving complex tasks. To this end you will perform fluorescence microscopy on nuclei populations and quantify their dynamics while challenging Physarum to mount a behaviour. Relating nuclei dynamics to morphological changes in the organism’s network architecture you will find out how nuclei information processing leads to emergent organism-scale behaviour. Your work is embedded in our interdisciplinary environment with biologists and applied mathematicians as collaborators.

4. Ph.D. student in bioinformatics and/or a wet-lab biologist with computational background

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The successful candidate will be part of the Andergassen lab based at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). 7. PhD Position: Multipath Transport with Real-time Capabilities for 6G

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This research topic is in the intersection of protocol and system design to support time-bounded access of mobile devices (including smartphones, vehicles, UAVs, industrial robots) to network-based services, likely at the edge. 22. Ph.D. Student for Design Automation, Simulation, and Verification of Field-coupled Nanotechnologies

Summary of Doctoral Project:

FCN is a class of emerging post-CMOS integrated circuit technologies at the nanoscale. Individual charged molecules on a substrate are coupled via field forces to transmit information and perform computations at the absolute limit of scaling. FCN technologies promise the realization of extremely low-power circuitry with minimal feature sizes; a desperately needed step toward a more sustainable future. Certain quantum-dot implementations are even considered to become bridging technologies that enable interoperability between conventional CMOS circuitry and quantum computers. While recent breakthroughs in the fabrication of Silicon Dangling Bonds (SiDBs) by a research enterprise enabled them to secure multi-million-dollar funding, automatic methods that compose FCN circuits from specifications are scarce. Due to the peculiarity and specificity of the FCN technologies’ design constraints, conventional physical design algorithms cannot be applied. In other words, design automation for an entire class of highly promising nanotechnologies that could potentially enable a future of powerful and green computational devices is still in its infancy.

2. PhD position for STM studies

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Size-dependent structural and electronic effects make clusters and nanoparticles extremely interesting for highly selective, mild catalytic processes. The intrinsic metastability of nanoparticulate matter, however, calls for a precise control of particle dissolution and ripening while tuning the catalytic activity. At the solid/liquid interface, we explore these phenomena from a fundamental point of view by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), at the atomic scale under a unique combination of size and potential (electrochemical) control. This project seeks a fundamental understanding of the chemical interaction between organic molecules and metallic Pd nanostructures during C–C coupling. STM in vacuum and in solution will provide detailed insight into the metal- molecule interaction at the atomic scale, by studying individual molecules in combination with a systematic variation of structure and size of the metal, supported on carbon and carbonitride films.

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This project aims to develop a sustainable, biodegradable bioplastic based on by-products or waste products, by developing and investigating a new type of bioplastic based on plants seeds polysaccharides (Mucilage). Plant seed mucilage is the base polysaccharide on which different molecules will be grafted and conjugate forming the complex bioplastic structure. This interdisciplinary project will require the chemical synthesis, modification, and grafting of the biopolymers with functional molecules to alter their physicochemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. As a successful candidate, you will perform chemical modification, synthesis, and in-depth data analysis. These research goals require expertise in different scientific fields and demand a multitude of laboratory equipment, Therefore, a key pillar in this research will be close multidisciplinary collaboration.

19. PhD in Biological Physics (experiment)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Hydrothermal vents where hot minerals stream into the ocean water are likely the cradle of life. Their caves and tunnels allow reactants to accumulate at catalytic sites to start the reactions at the origin of life. How do these catalytic sites form and grow within the vents? You will grow two-dimensional hydrothermal vents on a microfluidic chip and quantify the vent geometry from your data. You will assess how geochemical mineral composition and inflow rate determine vent morphology and where organic molecules accumulate. Measurements will inform your numerical simulations of vent remodeling and transport within the vent. Your project is embedded in the interdisciplinary collaborative research center on Emergence of Life situated in Munich. Direct exchange with marine biologist collaborator will allow to transfer your insights to three-dimensional fully formed vents as observed in the deep ocean and help unravel how life emerged on earth.
