Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat, as disease-causing bacteria evolve resistance to our drug treatments. If we can learn how this evolution happens, we will be better equipped to design treatments and strategies to beat these diseases. Large-scale genetic data exists on AMR in different bacteria worldwide, and our collaborators are generating more. However, mathematical and statistical approaches to learn evolutionary behaviour from these data remain limited. Adoptive cellular immunotherapy using CAR-T cells or NK cells can cure some hematological cancers, but several obstacles remain with respect to targeting solid cancers. This project aims to characterize NK cells in solid tumors and study how NK cell transcriptional networks can be altered to improve their ability to migrate to tissues, kill target cells and persist in vivo. The ultimate goal is to harness such insights in order to engineer improved effectors of NK cell-mediated immunotherapy towards solid tumors. An array of advanced molecular and cellular methods will be used within the project, in addition to human samples. The research group has a node within the Hematology and Regenerative Medicine division at Karolinska Institutet.

Speleothems are an important terrestrial climate archive and new ways of using this archive for reconstructing climate are continuously being developed. In this project we apply fluid inclusion microthermometry for quantitative paleo-temperature reconstructions. The method is based on the density of drip water relicts that are preserved in microscopic fluid inclusions. In the FluidMICS project, we aim to further develop and improve this method, to test its applicability to speleothems from various low latitude climate settings, and to apply it for climate reconstructions through the late Quaternary and beyond.
