1. Postdoctoral position for the Development of Protease-Responsive Diagnostic Devices

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Proteases are an important class of enzymes, that represent approx. 10% of all current drug targets. They are critical actors in health and disease and can provide insights into the state and progression of inflammatory conditions, cancer, and other ailments. Detection of protease activity in real-time and at the point-of-care could serve as a powerful clinical tool to inform application, monitoring, and adjustment of treatments. You will work in close collaboration with engineers, biologists, and clinician scientists to inform and support the development of different micro-and nanoagents for monitoring proteases. These agents contain custom-tailored peptide substrates and respond with detectable change of a magnetic or acoustic signal upon cleavage. Expanding upon a selection of target proteases, you will also perform a comprehensive proteomic study of patient samples to identify protease profiles and subsequently design suitable corresponding peptide. As one concrete clinical application, the project aims to lay the foundation for real-time in vivo assessment of inflammation in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

3. Postdoc position in Urban Data and Modeling Science

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The project “Comparative Ecology of Cities: Understanding Patterns, Processes and Properties of Cities to Improve Urban Conditions” is centred on the proposition that urban pattern-process-function relationships provide valuable knowledge to advance the science of urban planning. The project builds upon emerging theoretical and empirical evidence that patterns of human settlement systems (urban patterns) shape social and ecological processes (urban processes), and such processes, in turn, dictate the key demands of urban living such as social relations, mobility, economic exchanges, biophysical environment, ecological conditions, etc. (urban functions). The project will investigate such pattern-process-function relationships across several cities to develop generalizations that can be used as urban planning and design principles to guide sustainable urban development.

4. Post-Doctoral Researcher in Rehabilitation Engineering and Digital Health Technologies

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Clinical assessments have the potential to provide valuable insights into the effect of different therapeutic approaches. However, they are time-consuming to administer and suffer from several limitations, such as subjectivity, flooring/ceiling effects and poor sensitivity. This line of research aims to provide clinicians and therapists with objective and sensitive tools to precisely quantify impairments, both motor and somatosensory, in the clinic as well as in the home environment. In the last few years, we have developed technology-based assessments such as the Virtual Peg Insertion Test or the ETH MIKE that provide sensitive and reliable digital health metrics based on kinematic and kinetic data to characterize upper-limb sensorimotor function. Data from over 500 neurological patients have been collected with these devices, and several clinical studies are currently ongoing. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, your goal will be to spearhead this research line and coordinate the data collection and data analysis of these different studies.

5. Postdoctoral Researcher in Text-to-Speech Synthesis

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

At the Media Technology Center, we are currently exploring how speech synthesis methods can allow for new possibilities to create engaging audio content. Previously, we have built the first voice assistant that can understand and speak in the local Swiss dialects (low-resource text-to-speech). A new project at MTC aims to expand on this work and explore technologies that allow for controllable, adaptive, and expressive text-to-speech synthesis. While automatic text-to-speech systems have dramatically improved over the past years, current technologies have issues that make them hard to apply for applications in the media industry, especially for radio and video broadcasts. They often lack expressiveness in the produced speech, and the original speaker is often re-identifiable based on the generated speech.

9. Post-Doctoral position on the thermoacoustic dynamics of hydrogen fired combustors for aircraft propulsion

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The goal of this research is to understand, model and control thermoacoustic instabilities and flame dynamics in future hydrogen-fired aircraft combustors. These combustors will enable net CO2 reductions of future aircrafts of 75% compared to kerosene-powered aviation. The thermoacoustic instabilities result from the constructive interaction of the unsteady combustion process and the combustor acoustics. They are strongly undesirable because they can severely restrict the operating range of the engine. In this context, the development of special annular combustors for hydrogen necessitates significant research effort to predict and prevent thermoacoustic instabilities and to ensure robust and low-NOx combustion process.

10. Post-Doctoral position on the thermoacoustic dynamics of can-annular combustors

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The goal of this research is to understand and model thermoacoustic instabilities in future can-annular combustors. These combustors will enable clean combustion of green hydrogen in large gas turbines that will be used to balance intermittent electricity production of renewable sources. These thermoacoustic instabilities result from the constructive interaction of the unsteady combustion process and the combustor acoustics. They are strongly undesirable because they severely restrict the operating range of the engine. In this context, the development of special, more compact, can-combustors for hydrogen necessitates significant research effort to predict and prevent thermoacoustic instabilities.

12. Postdoctoral position on “Modeling the biophysics of microbial communities”

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Microbiomes consist of diverse communities of microorganisms which, by engaging in complex and often evolving interactions, regulate the functioning of human bodies or natural ecosystems. Beyond metabolic interactions, microbial communities are characterized and often shaped by rich biophysical interactions. The distance between cells determines the strength of the exchange of metabolites and the probability of encounter between cells. The movement of cells governs the rate at which cells aggregate into clusters or communities. The rate of flow dictates how rapidly nutrients are replenished and a community is refreshed. The transport of dissolved substances, by diffusion and flow, governs the field of signals that cells sense and can use for navigation, for example to find conspecifics or sources of nutrients. The spatial configuration of the environments affects all of these processes, from flow to nutrient fields, and further shapes the attachment and motility characteristics of cells. Many of these processes are general across multiple microbiomes: from the human gut, to particles in the ocean, to the surface of leaves.

13. Postdoctoral position on “Biophysical interactions in microbial communities”

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Biophysical interactions are key to the assembly and functioning of microbial communities. Encounter processes determine the rate at which different microorganisms come in contact with each other and with prominent resource patches such as sinking particles. Motility and chemotaxis drive associations between different microorganisms, for example allowing bacteria to find and retain position within the nutrient-rich region surrounding individual phytoplankton cells (the ‘phycosphere’). Attachment mechanisms can be an important and hitherto underappreciated phenotype in shaping symbioses between different microorganisms. Diffusion processes drive the transport and exchange of metabolites between microorganisms. Finally, fluid flow shapes the spatial arrangement of microorganisms and their resources, contributing to encounter dynamics and influencing the interaction processes in microbial communities.
