2. Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within Informatics – Optimization

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The activity in the optimization group is growing. In collaboration with the Department of Economics, we have recently initiated a 5-year integrated master program in information technology and economics. The successful candidate for the announced position is expected to develop and teach courses associated with this program. She/he is also expected to be actively involved in recruitment and supervision of master students, particularly in relation to the new program. The new postdoc will be in contact with companies and other research institutes, and she/he is expected to strengthen the international collaboration network of the optimization group. 3. Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position: Mechanisms and impact of non-canonical splicing

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Our laboratory recently revealed striking features in the genomes of larvaceans, a group of marine animals belonging to the sister group of vertebrates. One of the most extreme cases has been found in a species where over 90% of introns have variable borders that do not conform to the canonical splice sites, despite the presence of a conserved major spliceosome. Uncovering how the spliceosome can recognize a variety of splice sites will inform about the control of splicing accuracy, with potential benefits for understanding its role in human diseases. The objective of the project is to gain mechanistic clues about splice site recognition in the larvaceans Oikopleura dioica and Fritillaria borealis. With their fast lifecycle and simple anatomy, these organisms offer convenient platforms to test how impaired splicing can impact development and genetic stability.

4. Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position: Evolution of Hox gene function in Tunicates

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research group studies the evolution of chordates using as model organism the tunicate Oikopleura dioica. The project aims at elucidating the role and regulation of Hox genes during embryonic and larval development. There are nine Hox genes in Oikopleura that were dispersed at nine distinct locations of the genome (Seo et al, Nature 2004). The work will benefit from new technological developments for gene knock out and gene expression knock down obtained and exploited by the group (Deng et al, Current Biology 2018; Mikhaleva et al, J Exp Zool 2014) as well as whole embryo single cell RNA sequencing data (unpublished) and important genomic resources. A mutant line for Hox1 has already been produced with thorough description of the phenotype. The project will include some comparisons with Hox gene expression in the tunicate Ciona intestinalis, which is also bred at the Sars Centre.

5. Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within studies of non-thermal effects on fluid inclusion thermometry

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Stalagmites are an important terrestrial climate archive. In our lab we reconstruct past temperatures based on the density of former drip water enclosed in microscopic fluid inclusions in the stalagmite calcite matrix. To this end, we measure the liquid-vapour homogenisation temperature of the fluid inclusions. More information about the method can be found in Krüger et al. (Chem. Geol., 289, 2011) and in Marti et al. (Fluid Phase Equilibria, 314, 2012). In the FluidMICS project we want to further improve this analytical approach by identifying and characterizing non-thermal factors or processes that potentially affect a) the initial water density when the inclusions are formed, b) the volume of the inclusions after they have formed, c) the surface tension mediated collapse of the vapour bubble and d) the timing of the transition from open pores to hermetically sealed fluid inclusions.

8. Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within clumped isotope paleoceanography

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

With the DOTpaleo project, we aim to improve our understanding of the climate system under greenhouse conditions. To this end, we will reconstruct deep ocean temperatures during the early Cenozoic at different locations in the global oceans by means of clumped isotope thermometry on benthic foraminifera. In collaboration with colleagues at the Norwegian Research Centre (NORCE), we will compare the results with climate model simulations. This Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for a large part of the temperature reconstructions. We are looking for someone with hands-on experience in clumped isotope geochemistry on foraminifera, preferably with a background in early Cenozoic paleoclimate.

9. Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position: Ion Channel Biophysics

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Work in the Lynagh group focuses on the evolution, function, and pharmacology of ligand-gated ion channels, receptors that mediate rapid communication between neurons, using molecular phylogenetics, mutagenesis, chemical biology, and electrophysiology. We are especially interested in invertebrate ion channels whose function is crucial to the evolution of the nervous system, and from which we can gain valuable biological and pharmacological insights. This project will focus on the biophysical characterization of such channels – both native and heterologous – using electrophysiology on whole cells and membrane patches. 14. Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within cell biology and genetics

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The project takes advantage of the model system Drosophila, the fruit fly, to genetically induce tumors in vivo and monitor their growth and spread using high resolution confocal imaging. We are developing the genetic system to induce tumor growth within a defined region of cells while knocking down gene function in the surrounding microenvironment. The system will give us the means to rapidly genetically dissect signalling pathways influencing growth and spread via the available fly RNAi library stocks. We are most interested in understanding what influence the microenvironment (and to some extent nutrient status) plays to tumor cell growth and spread. The screening will initially be guided by RNAseq data comparing changes in the microenvironment when situated next to either wildtype or oncogene expressing cells.

15. Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within Arctic ecosystem ecology and Climate Change

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Permafrost is thawing at an unprecedented rate with rising temperatures in the Arctic. Permafrost thaw will expose large amounts of nitrogen and carbon due to microbial decomposition, with strong implications for carbon emission into the atmosphere. In TERRA, we seek to study the interactive effects of warming during the cold season and increased herbivory on permafrost thaw and cascading effects on N and C cycling in the High Arctic. We will set up a novel field experiment in the High Arctic tundra of Svalbard, where spring and autumn warming, strong winter rainfall and goose grubbing are manipulated. TERRA will investigate how the experimental manipulations affect (1) permafrost thaw depth (2) soil organic C degradation and N mineralization; (3) root-associated organisms in relation to their role in plant uptake and soil C sequestration and (4) microbial diversity and function in relation to C emission and soil N transformations. To address these questions, we will be combining new field techniques,state-of-the-art chemical and DNA-based measurements, and we have assembled a world leading interdisciplinary team of Arctic researchers.
