Coastal meadows around the Baltic Sea are a result of land uplift and grazing. In the past there were vast areas of well-connected coastal meadow but today only a fraction remain grazed by livestock. Coastal meadows will become smaller and more isolated when they are squeezed between rising sea levels and other land-covers in the near future, with detrimental effects on biodiversity. This project focuses on geographical analysis of historical data, topography and future sea level projection to estimate how much coastal meadow that have been lost the past 100 years and will be lost until year 2100, and how the losses affects biodiversity patterns at local and regional scales. The project focuses on plant communities but can also include other trophic levels. How much coastal meadows and where along the coastline will be needed to protect biodiversity for the future? Can we, together with stakeholders, identify suitable areas for restoration to optimise biodiversity preservation and climate mitigation?<\/span><\/p>\n

North Greenland is one of the least explored regions on Earth. In this remote region, feedbacks between the cryosphere, the ocean and the atmosphere can locally amplify environmental impacts and ecosystem changes driven by climate change. This amplification may have a direct impact on global ocean and climate conditions, including sea-level rise from mass-loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet. To tackle these outstanding questions, The North Greenland Earth-Ocean-Ecosystem Observatory (GEOEO) has been initiated as a broad research theme, adopted by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, to develop a fundamental understanding of the cryosphere\u2019s dynamic history and response to climate change, including implications for marine and terrestrial ecosystems in North Greenland and the adjacent Arctic Ocean. The field component of GEOEO involves a novel expedition to North Greenland with the Swedish icebreaker Oden in 2024, the North of Greenland 2024 Expedition.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project is aimed at analyzing ancient DNA on a million-year timescale. The analyses will use state-of-the-art genomic methods, and will focus on remains from several different vertebrate species dated to the Middle and Early Pleistocene (0.1 \u2013 2.6 million years ago). The PhD project is part of a 10-year research programme funded by the Swedish Research Council, aiming to trace the evolution of several mammalian species throughout their entire existence. The goals of this research programme are to investigate the processes of speciation, adaptation and hybridization and how these relate to past environmental change. However, achievingboth of these goals in practice can be difficult, as there may be conflicts between them when it comes to practical landscape management. In this project, the candidate will focus on ancient species-rich grasslands, as a part of the agricultural system, to investigate how biodiversity can be maintained without negative effects on the climate. Today there is only a fraction of ancient grasslands left where livestock is still grazing and functional connectivity is therefore a fundemental part of the preservation of biodiversity. Two key questions in the project are: 1) how should the grasslands be manged to conserve biodiversity and mitigate climate change? and 2) how many grasslands and where are these needed to preserve biodivsity for the future?
