25. Doctoral candidate / Project researcher position in fish evolutionary physiology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The position is located in the Department of Biology, University of Turku, Finland. The Doctoral student / Project researcher will work on an Academy of Finland-funded project “Physiological basis of fish adaptation to freshwater hypoxia: from plasticity to evolution” led by Dr Amélie Crespel. The position is fixed term from September 1, 2022 and last for three years, with possibility of extension. Hypoxia (i.e. low dissolved oxygen level in water) represents one of the most important climate change challenges for freshwater ecosystems. As the populations may not be able to escape the hypoxic conditions, it is crucial to understand how and through which mechanisms fish can adapt to these changing environments. When directly exposed, individuals may be able to adjust their aerobic and anaerobic metabolism through phenotypic plasticity. However, continued exposure over generations might require evolution.
