Umea University is one of the largest university in the world with thousands of employees, students, and research scientists are involved in the innovation of science and technology daily.

Umea University has huge a campus in Sweden and widely known as for its contribution in top notch education and research. The contribution of Umea University is not only limited to natural sciences and engineering but it also offers high quality research as well as higher education in bio-medical sciences, social sciences, humanities, psychology, education, architecture etc..

The positions are part of a large interdisciplinary project (https://kaw.wallenberg.org/en/research/winter-studies-arctic-yield-new-insights-greenhouse-gas-emissions) that aims to understand and quantify how processes during the arctic winter may be decisive for overall feedbacks from arctic tundra to the global climate. Arctic ecosystems store large amounts of organic carbon in plants and soil. Uptake of carbon by arctic plants is strongly limited by their access to nutrients, especially nitrogen, due to competition by microbes. Year-round carbon and nitrogen balances thus depend on the seasonality of the activities of plant and microbial communities, and their synchronization. In the Arctic, climate change is especially pronounced during autumn, winter and spring, which may cause asynchronies of these processes, leading to increased carbon and nitrogen losses and positive climate feedbacks.

Last Application Date: 2022-05-27

View Details & Apply

This postdoctoral position is part of a Swedish council financed research project to unravel the regulation of programmed cell death at the molecular level with focus on the structure of the proteins and biological membranes involved in this important process. Important key players in the mitochondrial (intrinsic) cell death pathway are membrane-active proteins of the Bcl-2 family. The main objective of this project is to understand the function – and underlying structural properties – of these proteins and their interactions with the mitochondrial membrane environment. For this purpose we will use structural biological methods focusing on solid-state NMR spectroscopy of lipid-protein complexes, complemented by liquid-state NMR. In addition, we will also use neutron reflectometry on these lipid protein complexes). You will primarily study the membrane bound Bcl-2 proteins and their mutual interactions. In addition, you will also be supporting NMR based work on human protein kinases which can be involved in human cancer, in part, through their regulation of Bcl-2 proteins.

Last Application Date: 2022-05-31

View Details & Apply

The overall goal of the research project is to identify connections between the prenatal environment, epigenetic alterations and later disease risk, for example risk of developing asthma and allergy. One of the aims is to develop a predictive model to be used for early identification of high risk children. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to develop independent research ideas, within the scope of the project. For example through collaboration with international cohorts and consortia.

Last Application Date: 2022-06-01

View Details & Apply

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the international research project “Holistic evaluation and restoration measures of human impacts on freshwater ecosystems across biogeographical gradients (FreshRestore)”, co-funded by the European Commission (https://www.biodiversa.org/1587) and Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Globally, lake ecosystems are under anthropogenic stress (e.g. climate change, land use and fishing). A key challenge is to understand and predict how freshwaters over gradients of catchments respond to different stressors, and to gain knowledge how to preserve and restore these ecosystems. FreshRestore will develop integrative models to predict population and food web levels consequences of natural environmental drivers and anthropogenic stressors using ecological population- and statistical models and large data sets of lake abiotic parameters, fish communities and food webs across biogeographical gradients in Fennoscandia, combined with information on climate, land- and water-use, and mitigation efforts (e.g., habitat restorations).

Last Application Date: 2022-06-01

View Details & Apply

The postdoc will perform studies in the laboratory of Prof Maria Fällman who study molecular mechanisms in bacterial gastrointestinal pathogens important for the ability of these pathogens to establish and maintain persistent infections using Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium as model pathogen. Despite that gene isoforms are involved in most biological processes, they are commonly ignored because we lack tools to understand them. In this project we will build new large-scale machine learning tools to extract gene isoform information from commonly existing single-cell RNA-seq data. The approach we consider is based on variational autoencoders and sequence models. The challenges lie in the data being extremely large, sparse, and noisy. The project will open doors into the currently most rapidly expanding field in biology. You will carry out formulation, implementation and testing of machine learning approaches to model and understand single-cell RNAseq data. You will present your findings, write manuscripts, help supervising students, and actively contribute to a collegial lab culture.

1.
