Industrial aquaponics is an agricultural technique that combines elements of both aquaculture and hydroponics in a synergistic production technology that utilizes fish wastes as plant fertilizer, thus reducing input and waste disposal requirements of both systems. Technological advances are increasingly moving aquaponics away from small-scale production into industrial environments by focusing on improved macro- and micronutrient recovery. Improvements in engineering design have been able to significantly increase output capacities and have now made industrial aquaponics applications a commercial reality. One strategy is the use of sludge digesters to more efficiently remineralise solid wastes. <\/span>

11. Postdoctoral Research Fellow in cold-water coral ecology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:<\/span><\/h2>\n

Lophelia pertusa is a deep-water reef-forming scleractinian coral with global distribution. In Swedish waters the distribution is limited to the deep parts of the Koster fjord in northern Bohusl\u00e4n where most reefs have been damaged or become extinct due to historic anthropogenic impact. Lophelia pertusa is a broadcast spawner and in the Skagerrak reproduction occurs primarily in February. Researchers in our laboratory have recently been able to study the reproduction with subsequent larval development in this coral. In the recently started RESTORESEAS project with 13 international partners, we aim to explore the role of microbial biofilms on settlement and recruitment in L. pertusa for restoration purposes. The possibility for clonal propagation through micro fragmentation will also be investigated.<\/span>
