1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theoretical Evolutionary Biology

The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Academy Research Fellow Dr. Piret Avila are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to develop theoretical work on the evolution of ageing and life history theory. This planned PhD project will focus on understanding the diversity of ageing patterns across the tree of life, investigating why some organisms exhibit negligible ageing and exploring sex-specific differences in ageing. The work has significant implications for ageing research, reproductive health and life history theory more broadly. We utilize various methods from theoretical evolutionary biology, including evolutionary game theory, adaptive dynamics, population genetics, and optimization theory.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in controlled and targeted drug delivery
Summary of PhD Program:
A successful candidate is expected to develop protocols for formulation of gated pH-responsive liposomes and aptamers against bacterial elements and to characterize the biotherapeutics of the liposomal delivery system against biofilm. In the second project, the candidate is expected to develop new light or heat sensitive polysaccharide hydrogel formulations that can be combined with external light activation mechanisms. This might also be combined with liposomal carriers. A preliminary research plan has been made for both projects. You will contribute to the fundamental understanding of how advanced drug delivery systems can be optimized for precise delivery and controlled drug release, which contribute to improving precision and personalized medicine.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Soil Biodiversity Changes in Response to Global Changes
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a Doctoral researcher to join our team and undertake some of the work we are doing as part of GC-Worms. The successful candidate will use and expand upon previously synthesized ecological datasets on community-scale diversity (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-021-00912-z) of earthworms across the globe. The research will be focused on understanding alpha and beta diversity changes of earthworm communities over space and time. The successful candidate will be given plenty of opportunities to expand their skills, including data handling and management, statistics, R programming and scientific writing (including for grant applications).

This research aims to develop food-grade materials to disrupt fat digestion and absorption, offering a solution to obesity comparable to leading anti-obesity medications but without adverse effects. We will engineer a variety of food-grade materials using different methods. These materials will be characterized with cutting-edge technologies, and their safety and effectiveness in addressing obesity will be investigated through advanced chemical, biochemical, microbiota, and in vitro gastrointestinal analyses, as well as preclinical tests.
