1. PhD Position in Exploration Geophysics

Summary of PhD Program:

You will take part in the project which aim to establish a prototype service for monitoring and forecasting geoelectric fields that drive GIC in Europe. The service will help operators to protect critical ground infrastructure vulnerable to damage caused by GIC. The service will display geographic hazard maps of near real-time and historical geoelectric fields, continuously running short-term (lead time 15-70 minutes) and long-term (lead time 2-4 days) forecasts, and a storm time mid-term (lead time 2-12 hours) forecast. The geoelectric field will be derived from full three-dimensional (3D) induction modelling of the conducting ground as driven by realistic external geomagnetic variations. The short-term forecast will rely on machine learning modeling of geomagnetic variations from solar wind data sampled at the Lagrange point L1. The long-term forecast will estimate the activity expected due to solar wind co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) and high-speed streams. You will be responsible for implementing 3D induction modelling of the conducting ground as driven by realistic external geomagnetic variations.

2. Energy Engineering with special emphasis on H2 production and storage

Summary of PhD Program:

Development of sustainable industry in future relies on H2 from cheap renewable electricity. However, some challenges exist such as electricity availability and price fluctuation. This PhD project aims to solve such supply issues of the electrolysis-H2 by complementing with bio-H2 and using methanol as a storage and transport carrier. More specifically, you will develop an innovative technology for biomass gasification and methanol-to-H2 conversion. The goal is to boost the efficiencies and bring down investment cost for H2 value chain. You will mainly carry out experimental work to develop e-reactor concepts, i.e. a reactor with direct heating of reactants with induction. In addition, you will analyze the overall performance of e-reactor concepts and compare with conventional and competing H2 production approaches at the system level.

3. PhD Position in Energy Engineering – with a special emphasis on development of quasi-solid-state composite electrolytes for high-voltage batteries

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD student you will work for a doctoral degree as the final goal, according to the goals specified in the Higher Education Ordinance. In parallel with your thesis work, you will also develop your general skills by taking courses as part of research education. This is a four-year PhD project, with the financial support from the Swedish Energy Agency and the cooperation with the University of Oulu in Finland and the Institute of Process Engineering (IPE) in China. The overall aim of the project is to develop high performance quasi-solid-state electrolytes primarily concerning poly(ionic liquids) (PIL) and ionic liquids (ILs). The work is mainly on experimental including measurements and testing. Within the PhD research project, we will identify and develop PILs and ILs together with fillers to prepare composite electrolytes, and surface modification (interlayer) will be conducted to improve the cell performance. Together with a team of other PhD students/post-docs, the key mechanisms will be revealed via in-situ and ex-situ advanced experiments as well as computer modelling.

We are looking for a PhD student for a project regarding digital urban planning with a focus on voltage quality, reliability and smart electricity use. The project is financed by Vinnova and carried out in collaboration with ABB, Skellefteå Kraft and Skellefteå Municipality. The project aims to study and plan the electric power system and energy use in a smaller geographical area through the creation of a digital twin. 8. PhD Position in Energy Engineering – with a special emphasis on lignin dissolution and electro-conversion with ionic liquids

Summary of PhD Program:

This is is a four-year PhD project, with financial support from EU (within the program EIC, pathfinder, alternative routes for H2 production), where five universities and two industries are working together. The overall aim of the project is to develop effective ionic liquids (ILs) as promoters to improve performance. The work covers theoretical screening combined with experimental measurements and testing, as well as process assessment. Within the PhD project, we will develop ILs to obtain IL-blended electrolytes to reach promotional effects on the targeted catalytic reactions in the electro-chemical conversion of lignin and its derivatives. We aim to enhance both the reactions happening on electrodes and in the electrolyte and finally achieve low overpotential. In parallel, we will also conduct process assessments, such as life cycle assessment (LCA).
