Vanderbilt Law School invites applications for a fellowship working with the school’s Law and Business Program. The fellowship is a two-year appointment that can start either Spring 2023 or Fall 2023. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. The fellow will spend four semesters in residence at the law school and will have the opportunity to work under the mentorship of Vanderbilt law faculty, particularly faculty affiliated with the Law and Business Program. The position is designed to give the fellow time to focus on research and writing and to prepare for a tenure-track position at a US law school. Consistent with this goal, the fellow is only expected to teach one upper-level business law course each year, and the fellow will have an opportunity to present their research while at a Vanderbilt. Seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join a large collaborative project testing different misinformation interventions. The position will be at Vanderbilt University under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Fazio. Additional mentorship will be provided by Dr. David Rand (MIT) and Dr. Steven Lewandowsky (U of Bristol). The project aims to compare the efficacy of eight popular misinformation interventions through large online survey experiments and field experiments on YouTube. Our lab studies molecular mechanisms of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. We are specifically focused on how the brain controls the heart in normal and pathological conditions. Interestingly the heart has a brain of its own as well. In acute stressful situations, the heart signals the brain to send support and impart protection via complex mechanisms. Chronic stress, however, injures the myocardium. The protective mechanism fails as heart-brain communication is disrupted. Our goal is to enhance and modulate heart-brain communication to augment the intrinsic protective mechanisms and develop them as therapies for heart failure and sudden death. We use interdisciplinary approaches to understand physiology and develop therapies for pathophysiology.

The Bastos laboratory primarily works with non-human primates (NHPs) to collect rich multi-area, multi-laminar as monkeys perform cognitive tasks. In addition, we have recently partnered with the Allen Institute through the OpenScope program. This will allow us to have exclusive access to multi-area high-density neuropixels data in mice that are viewing a predictable sequence with occasional violations. Through optotagging, we will have access to the specific inhibitory cell type of neurons we record in mice. Our ultimate aim is to translate this knowledge via a combination of different techniques (machine learning and optogenetics in macaques) to enable a cell-type specific interrogation of neural circuits in the primate brain. Together we hope to understand the neural implementation of cognition down to specific cells and circuits, and how circuits are integrated into brain-wide networks in multiple species.

The DelGiorno Laboratory studies Pancreatitis and Pancreatic Cancer, which are devastating diseases with few treatments. This is largely due to late diagnosis and a lack of understanding of the early events leading to injury or tumor formation. Her laboratory uses a combination of histopathology, genetically engineered mouse models, small cell number RNA-sequencing, and ultrastructural microscopy to uncover early changes in the pancreas leading to cancer. They have discovered a surprising amount of epithelial heterogeneity in the pancreas in response to injury and/or oncogenic mutation, including the formation of a number of different secretory cell populations, including tuft cells. The DelGiorno lab is studying the physiological role of metaplasia-derived secretory cell populations in injury, pre-invasive disease and tumorigenesis with the ultimate goal of exploiting anti-tumorigenic signaling or targeting pro-tumorigenic signaling pathways for patient benefit.

The Choi Lab studies basic and pre-clinical research projects to understand mechanisms of carcinogenic transition in gastric carcinogenesis. The Choi Lab is a multiple (NCI and DOD) funded gastric cancer research laboratory and uses novel in vivo mouse models and in vitro dysplasia organoid models which are unique in the gastric cancer field. We aim to define critical transition points which lead to neoplastic transitions for SPEM cells as the origin of gastric carcinogenesis.
