4. Doctoral student in Natural Science, specializing in biology/ aquaculture

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The overall goal of the project is to design a RAS loop that ensures good water quality for optimized growth, health and welfare as well as product quality of the farmed species, as a prototype for a full-scale system. The overall aim of the PhD project is to create a scientific knowledge base for development of recirculating aquaculture systems, RAS, with focus on the microbial filters for good health and welfare of the farmed fish. Special emphasis will be on a stable environment, with respect to water quality, throughout the life cycle of the fish. Focus is on microbial filters for removal of nitrogen and particles, as well as for keeping sufficient alkalinity. The objectives of the project are to characterise biofilters to understand how they can be optimised with respect to inorganic nitrogen, small particle removal and pH regulation in order to create good health and welfare of the farmed fish.

5. Doctoral student in Medical Science – Medical radiation Sciences, radiation biology and cancer

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The thyroid gland is a relatively radiosensitive organ important to protect from ionizing radiation, and especially after exposure to radioiodine. The mechanisms behind radiobiological effects are still little known. Current molecular methods are very useful for mechanistic studies on cells and tissues. The present project will focus on late epigenetic effects. Epigenetic modifications are changes in expression of genes without any alteration in the DNA sequence and may be inherited. It has been proposed that epigenetic modulation after irradiation is most important for late tissue responses and specifically cancer induction for e.g. thyroid cancer. As far as we know, detailed whole-genome epigenetic effects of ionizing radiation on thyroid tissue in vivo have not been presented. Thus, the results of this project will influence radiation protection work in the society. The overall aim of the project is to examine epigenetic effects long time after internal exposure to low to medium dose of 131I on normal thyroid tissue in vivo.

6. PhD Student in theoretical plasma physics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The research group in theoretical plasma physics is interested in what happens when ultra-intense laser pulses interact with matter, such as gases, solid targets, plasmas, and particle beams. Essential tools in our research activity are advanced computational models, adapted for parallel computing, where we are at the cutting edge of development. We have both applied and fundamental projects, such as the development of compact radiation sources and questions of fundamental physics in strong fields, respectively. The group has close collaborations with experimental groups and contributes to the design, planning and interpretation of experiments. Our group is expected to grow over the next few years, giving greater possibilities for engaging in collaborative working between theory and experiments in laser-matter interactions.

7. Doctoral student in Natural Science, specialising in Biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Pathogens provide some of the strongest selection pressures in nature, driving continual dynamic coevolutionary interactions with their hosts. While such strong selection might normally erode genetic variation, genetic variation for resistance to pathogens is typically high, because hosts can usually only resist a subset of pathogens circulating in a population (i.e., pathogens tend to show specificity in their ability to infect hosts). As soon as particular pathogen strains or host genotypes become prevalent, they experience negative frequency-dependent selection that favours other strains or genotypes, and thereby maintains genetic variation in the wider population.

8. Doctoral student in Medical Science – Developmental Neuroscience

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Children born prematurely have an increased risk of infections, which can contribute to long-term neurological complications, but the mechanisms are unknown. The bacterium Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE) is the most common infection in premature babies. In studies in neonatal mice, we have discovered that SE infection reprograms the transcriptome in microglia (the brain’s immune cell) and identified the activation of pyroptosis, a recently discovered cell death mechanism. The overall purpose of the doctoral project is to investigate pyroptosis in the brain after nenonatal SE infection and apply the new knowledge to investigate new brain-protective treatments. The doctoral student will receive broad education in several research disciplines and methods, including physiology, microbiology, neuroscience, neuropathology, experimental animal knowledge and behavior, advanced imaging techniques, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence.

10. Doctoral student in Pharmaceutical Science – Gut-brain axis and addiction

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Addictive disorders are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The mechanisms contributing towards this chronic relapsing brain disease are complex, and recent advances imply appetite-regulatory peptides as essential modulators. Appetite regulation is complex and involves various gut-brain peptides such as ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and amylin. GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists are approved for the treatment of diabetes type II as they modulate energy homeostasis. Besides, we previously found that GLP-1R agonists prevent various alcohol- and drug-mediated behaviors. Although appetite-regulatory peptides appear to be essential for reward-related behaviours, the various aspects of this interaction remain to be determined. One of these is the role of GLP-1R in the lateral septum, a brain region important for reward and addiction processes, for this interaction. A physiological role of GLP-1 within this area has already been demonstrated as activation of GLP-1R in the lateral septum reduces food intake in rodents. In the present Ph.D. project, the role of GLP-1 in the lateral septum in reward regulation and in addictive disorders will be investigated in detail.

11. Doctoral student in Software Engineering

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Third-cycle studies comprises four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. Those who are employed as doctoral students must primarily devote themselves to their doctoral education. However, a doctoral student may to 20 percent of full-time work over the study period work with so-called departmental service in a teaching or supporting role, which can be concentrated on certain parts of the year depending on the needs of the business in consultation with the student. At the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the doctoral student is expected to work with departmental service and primarily participate in teaching at the undergraduate and advanced level. If departmental service is performed corresponding to 20 percent of full-time study time, the employment contract is extended by the corresponding period, which gives a total employment of five years.
