1. PhD position in Distributed Control for Highly Reliable Communication

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Traditional resource allocation in telecommunication networks is based on the scarcity of bandwidth. As such, state of the art techniques are focusing on distributing resources to users so that to satisfy some minimum throughput-latency service requirement. Free space optical (FSO) satellite networks present, however, an extremely large bandwidth. Focus should be on severe throughput reductions or outages due to a rather variable channel which needs to be accurately predicted. This project targets the creation of a proof-of-concept Software Defined Network (SDN) platform with distributed intelligence in order to allow for reliable communication under every sort of uncertain channel. As such, each intelligent agent in the SDN, placed within the satellites themselves will infer the consequence to global behaviour (e.g. network congestion and/or delay) based on local perturbation (e.g. bad channel, mixed traffic requirements) and perform proactive actions (e.g. reroute traffic via different satellite-links).

4. PhD position “Biogeomorphological evolution of salt marshes under wave

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In this PhD project, you will investigate how a salt marsh evolves over time and how it interacts with wave and tidal forcing with a combination of field measurements and numerical modelling. Emphasis will be given on the cross-shore width and the edge of the salt marsh, and under which conditions the salt marsh grows seawards or retreats landwards. The resilience of salt marshes with changing climate is a pressing question since the extent of a salt marsh will have a direct impact on coastal flood defense strategies. The focus of this research will be on natural salt marshes as well as on hybrid solutions with human-made structures partially sheltering salt marshes (e.g. brushwood dams). To determine the evolution of a salt marsh, process-based vegetation growth models will be incorporated into hydrodynamic models and small-scale biogeomorphological processes will be scaled up to quantify their impact on wetlands.

5. PhD position on Internet Path Security

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The goal of this PhD project is to study how we can increase Internet path security in the context of the current Internet. This work will build on existing ideas, such as RPKI and BGPsec, but also the things we can learn from novel Internet architectures such as SCION, and novel initiatives such as the proposed Autonomous System Provider Authorization (ASPA) standard. We also envisage the potential to extend path security beyond the IP domain, e.g., incorporating path information on lower layers of the OSI model, all the way down to the physical layer (as the Internet is ultimately also vulnerable to physical attacks).

6. PhD position in Federated Monitoring and Automated Response

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Real-time monitoring is essential for threat detection and response. Many different monitoring approaches have been proposed in the state-of-the-art and several tools are available on the market. However, the complexity and dynamism of modern distributed environments pose a critical challenge to such tools, which are limited in terms of scalability and visibility. Additionally, in such distributed architectures it is crucial to correlate observed insights (e.g., indicators of compromise) to track lateral movement. The goal of this PhD Project is to research novel methodologies to monitor distributed environments, ultimately aiming at threat detection, automate the extraction, learning, and correlation of cyber threat intelligence (CTI), and reason about effective and transferable threat response strategies.

8. PhD in understanding the current state of cybersecurity with the help of macro …

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Twente University Centre for Cybersecurity Research has a vacancy for a PhD Position in understanding the current state of cybersecurity with the help of macro and micro level indicators. A rational security decision at the firm level should result in maximum organizational utility. Unfortunately, security managers need to constantly take decisions under uncertain circumstances and constrained budgets in order to make their organizations cyber safe. It is hard for decision makers to determine on how and how much to invest in security without understanding it’s expected future benefits or to comment on whether or not to pay the ransom after a breach of their IT systems without knowing their alternatives.

13. PhD Candidate “Deep learning based object outline extraction from airborne …

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Maps are quickly becoming outdated, about 10 % of the objects change annually. This project focuses on methods to automatically interpret newly acquired sensor data to detect and to update the changed objects in the digital topographic map. The sensor data includes high resolution 2D aerial image data and 3D laser scanner data. Our approach is to use the existing (old) topographic maps to learn how various objects appear in these 2D and 3D datasets. The PhD researcher’s task is to design a deep learning approach to generate correct object boundaries in vector format from the airborne sensor data. Closely connected to the task of semantic segmentation of data is the delineation of the data into object boundaries. How does the boundary of an object appear in the map, and can we transfer this knowledge to draw accurate object polygons from sensor data?
