3. Fully Funded PhD Position in vitro dermal scar research
Summary of PhD Program:
You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis < on cellular and molecular responses of an in vitro dermal model following mechanotherapy (extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)). Every year, 40-70% of the more than 80 milliondermal scars produced after surgical procedures, trauma, or burns develop into problematic hypertrophic scars. Mechanical forces impact wound healing through mechanotransduction, triggering changes in gene transcription. Although mechanotherapy (e.g. ESWT) is currently used in clinical practice, the factors determining its effectiveness are not known.
Application Deadline: 19 August 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in cardiovascular exercise physiology
Summary of PhD Program:
You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis. You will work on a project aiming to improve the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure through combined exercise echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPETecho). The goal is to enhance HFpEF diagnosis, personalize treatment, and improve patient quality of life by understanding and targeting specific exercise-related physiologic abnormalities.
Application Deadline: 8 August 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in neurosciences and hypoxia-mediated disruption of the blood-brain barrier in multiple sclerosis
Summary of PhD Program:
You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of (bio) medical sciences. The fellowship is part of a cutting-edge project aimed at uncovering the mechanisms underlying Multiple Sclerosis (MS), with a particular focus on the blood brain barrier dysfunction and hypoxia. In this project, you will (i) investigate the role of vascular endothelial dysfunction in MS using dynamic vessel analysis; (ii) develop advanced in vitro BBB models to study the effects of hypoxia-mediated oxidative stress; (iii) explore the regenerative potential of immune cells in enhancing BBB recovery under hypoxic conditions..
Application Deadline: August 22, 2024

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in experimental oncology
Summary of PhD Program:
You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Center for Oncological Research in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Within the Centre for Oncology Research, you will play a limited role in the provision of both scientific services and service to the society, including through support and participation in science communication activities.
Application Deadline: 5 August 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in hepatology and gastroenterology
Summary of PhD Program:
You are actively working on the preparation and defense of a doctoral thesis in the domain of hepatology and gastroenterology. You are investigating the role of fibroblast activation protein (FAP) in the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)-induced fibrosis (and its relation to impaired vascular biology), and in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). You use advanced hemodynamic, imaging, and molecular techniques to unravel the pathophysiological role of FAP, as well as to study the role of FAPIs (radiolabeled derivatives of a potent FAP inhibitor) as diagnostic and therapeutic agents.
Application Deadline: 8 August 2024
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in musculoskeletal magnetic resonance imaging
Summary of PhD Program:
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is key for diagnosing musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries and monitoring after therapy. However, conventional MRI is subjective and has limitations in terms of image resolution and quality. The principal goal of this PhD project is to apply and evaluate a super-resolution reconstruction (SRR) framework for anatomical and quantitative imaging of the MSK system, with a particular focus on internal derangement of joints and skeletal muscle injuries. SRR qMRI could open up exciting possibilities to help inform return to sports after MSK injury and evaluate the effectiveness of new treatments.
Application Deadline: July 18th, 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in product development
Summary of PhD Program:
You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of Product Development. You will employ Research through Design to investigate how embodied interaction propels inclusive design. The practical context is the conception of a new product dedicated to one specific function, for example home banking, Ambient Assistive Living (AAL) applications, etc. The product uses an interaction style that fits people who are unable or unwilling to use today’s smartphone and tablet solutions.
Application Deadline: 1 September 2024
10. Fully Funded PhD Position in built heritage and engineering/physics
Summary of PhD Program:
The research group Antwerp Cultural Heritage Sciences (https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/research-groups/arches/) in the Faculty of Design Sciences, in collaboration with InViLab in the Faculty of Applied Engineering and VisionLab at the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) interdisciplinary doctoral scholarship holder in the field of built heritage and engineering/physics.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in interpreting studies
Summary of PhD Program:
Multimodality in simultaneous interpreting: The effect of visual support on cognitive processing and performance. Abstract: In simultaneous interpreting (SI) incoming verbal and nonverbal information from the speaker is frequently complemented by supports such as a slide presentation (with or without captioning) or computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tools (e.g., terminology software). Yet, the equation between the facilitating effect of these supports in terms of performance and the added cognitive load on information processing lacks empirical investigation.
