1. PhD Research Fellow in Informatics: Visual Data Science to Master Complex Simulation Ensembles
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Our employees are expected to contribute to excellence with high-quality research and teaching. The working environment for this position is (1) UiB’s Center for Data Science, CEDAS, (2) the involved research groups of visualization and machine learning, as well as (3) the cooperation between UiB and the University of Stuttgart. The cooperation with UiB’s Department of Geosciences is also important for this position. The PhD project is advised by Prof. H. Hauser (visual data science) and co-advised by Assoc.-Prof. N. Blaser (machine learning) as well as Prof. Th. Spengler (meteorology). Profs. Th. Ertl and M. Sedlmair from the Univ. of Stuttgart are also involved in the planned research. The project synopsis is: To understand inherent uncertainties in weather prediction, it is common to consult stochastically perturbed simulation ensembles with highly detailed ensemble members. Extracting relevant conclusions from such ensembles is very challenging and depends on a successful condensation of the data. Especially when aiming at an interpretation of an entire ensemble in terms of domain-relevant features, such as cyclones, fronts, rain, etc., summarization is very difficult and only possible on the basis of expert knowledge. We foresee that new visual data science methods from this project will significantly support the study of such rich ensembles.

The position is part of a transdisciplinary research program and initiative for establishing an international Centre of Excellence on actionable knowledge: AcKnowledges (for more information, see https://www.uib.no/en/acknowledges). The problem addressed is the following. Pressing complex issues such as pandemics, chemical risks, climate adaptation and biodiversity loss exemplify society’s heavy reliance on institutionalised expertise to inform and justify action. The aim of the project is to develop new lipid nanoparticle (LNP) system for oppositely charged oligonucleotide-LNP delivery. 8. PhD Research Fellow in biostatistics of anti-microbial resistance
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat, as disease-causing bacteria evolve resistance to our drug treatments. If we can learn how this evolution happens, we will be better equipped to design treatments and strategies to beat these diseases. Large-scale genetic data exists on AMR in different bacteria worldwide, and our collaborators are generating more. However, mathematical and statistical approaches to learn evolutionary behaviour from these data remain limited. Our group has recently developed several approaches for inferring evolutionary dynamics from diverse data, with successful applications to diverse biological and medical questions. This project will adapt, develop, and harness these approaches to learn how AMR evolves from existing and new data. Global comparison and application is a key aspect of this project: we will develop approaches that can be used by everyone, anywhere, to better inform clinical strategies given some observations. Biological experience is not required (training in the biological aspects of the project will be provided), but enthusiasm for engaging with biology and biological/medical collaborators is essential.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
The PhD Research Fellow is a part of the project “Past behavior of the Southern Ocean`s atmosphere and cryosphere (SOUTHSPHERE). The project seeks to deepen our understanding of the natural range of atmospheric climate variability in the Southern Ocean. We are particularly interested in the past behavior of the Southern hemisphere westerlies: powerful winds that regulate Earth`s climate by spurring ocean circulation, storing anthropogenic carbon, and exchanging heat. The southerly westerly winds play a very important role in the global climate system. Observations show that they also play an important role in today’s global warming. To reconstruct the climate system, the project will use glaciers as a climate indicator through studies of lakes. To make continuousreconstructions of the glaciers, one will use various proxy methods that include CT scanning and cryptotephra analysis to ensure the most robust reconstructions possible. All sediment samples were collected during the field season of 2019. For the DYNASOR project, the successful candidate will contribute with lake sediment analyses from Iceland using the same methods as in the Kerguelen Islands but with focus on reconstructing past mega floods from the glacier Vatnajökull. This includes field work in Iceland to collect sediment cores in the first part of the PhD project.

12. PhD research fellowship in ocean dynamics at the Department of Earth Science
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Multiple lines of evidence show that the circulation of the North Atlantic Ocean is changing. One notable expression of these changes is a regional cooling that is in striking contrast to the global trend; the “warming hole”. While the similarity between this cooling and the fingerprint of AMOC weakening in climate models has been used to argue that the decline in circulation present in virtually all simulations of future climate is already underway, recent observations call the hypothesized mechanism into question. This debate highlights both the complexity and urgency of contextualizing the changing subpolar North Atlantic. Here we will focus on two fundamental aspects underlying the current uncertainty, (1) the interaction of surface gyre and deep overturning circulation, and (2) a paleoceanographic perspective of natural variability in the region.
