PhD position is related to the 3-year research project “Design as Somatic Expertise: The User’s Body and Well-Being in Design Today,” funded by Carlsberg Foundation. The project is led by Harun Kaygan at the Department of Design and Communication in Kolding, under the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Southern Denmark. The research project “Design as Somatic Expertise” investigates designers’ interest in and engagements with users’ bodily well-being across design disciplines such as product design and interaction design, and in the design of diverse products as medical devices and playground equipment. We are interested in how designed products track users’ movements, habits and bodily processes, as well as how designers develop and use methods to capture users’ gestures, skills and affective states.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
We are seeking excellent and highly motivated candidates with an MSc degree in computer science or in mathematics with computer science as a side topic. The MSc degree must be completed before 31 August 2022, so not necessarily before the application deadline. The ideal candidate has interest and experience in algorithms and proofs. Some experience with machine learning is an advantage, but not a requirement. The project focus is on improving optimization algorithms in online decision-making. Using techniques from the field of online algorithms for solving optimization problems, we can provide worst-case guarantees, but normal (average-case) behaviour may not be satisfactory. Using techniques from machine learning, we can often provide good behaviour in practice, but guarantees are lacking; for example for situations not captured by the training data. We aim at combining the best features from these two areas.

This PhD project is funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) in the framework of DFF Sapere Aude leader. The project intends to develop artificial enzymes by combining enzymes/proteins with organocatalytic polymers. Our group is specialized in the polymer synthesis, molecular catalysis design, and protein modification. Our lab is actively engaged in on-site collaborations with colleagues from Danish Institute for Advanced Study, Biomolecular Nanoscale Engineering Center, and SDU Protein Production and Purification Platform, but also strongly cooperates with groups in polymer design and enzyme catalysis from Germany and China.
