1. Fully Funded PhD Position in condensed matter theory
Summary of PhD Program:
The project will mainly focus on quantum many-body physics in the field condensed matter physics. It will involve theoretical investigation of quantum systems both in and out of equilibrium using mainly analytical methods. 2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mixed-Signal ASIC for molecular medical imaging
Summary of PhD Program:
The research will be conducted in the Division of Electronics and Embedded Systems in collaboration with the medical imaging group at KTH. The aim of the research is to provide the next generation of sensors for molecular imaging and is supported by a recent European ERC advanced grant. The aim is to drastically improve efficiency and spatial resolution, which is expected to have a high impact on the diagnosis of cancer and cardiovascular disease in the future. The sensors will have integrated analog and digital mixed CMOS electronics with ultra-low power consumption. 3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nanostructured Semiconductors for Photonics
Summary of PhD Program:
The focus is on the realization of advanced light manipulation functions (e.g. optical resonances, spectrally controlled absorption and engineered light scattering) using photonic semiconductor nanostructures (Mie resonators) and their arrangements for ultra-thin film solar cells. 5. Fully Funded PhD Position in design of mining tool material using ICME
Summary of PhD Program:
Cemented carbides are materials with tungsten carbide grains and a cobalt binder phase. They have excellent materials properties, but a high dependence on the critical raw material cobalt. This project will investigate replacing cobalt with an iron based binder, and in doing so utilising the martensitic phase transformation to achieve a material with excellent mechanical properties for rock drilling applications. This will be done through a combination of thermodynamic and kinetic modelling through ICME (Integrated and Computational Materials Engineering), experimental materials characterisation (including advanced microscopy and spectroscopy) and testing of materials properties.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in smart and resilient microgrids
Summary of PhD Program:
As a promising smart grid technology, microgrid has attracted great attention in the modern grid for the renewable energy integration as well as the transportation electrification. The microgrid is a typical cyber-physical system with sophisticated software-based control and communication networks, which are vulnerable under cyberattacks. Moreover, microgrid is a power converter dominated grid, which suffers low inertia and stability challenges. This PhD project aims to utilize artificial intelligence methods (e.g., deep reinforcement learning) and data with advanced control methods to develop smart and resilient microgrids with guaranteed stability, security and resilience under various cyberattacks and disturbances. To achieve rapid decarbonization of the industrial sector, technically efficient and cost-effective hybrid solutions integrating renewable energy technologies, heat electrification and/or upgrading systems, energy storage and power units are deemed. We aim to design, and prototype different technologies, including high temperature thermal energy storage, heat pumps and renewable integrated systems. One of our research groups works closely with the forest industry with a focus on robotics, sensor systems and artificial intelligence. Today, the risk related to damage is commonly assessed on experience or empirical knowledge. This project aims to use finite element modelling to increase the knowledge regarding the risk associated with cracks in the shotcrete lining and bond failure between shotcrete and rock. Summary of PhD Program:
A project funded by Horizon Europe “Metallic Elements Dissipation Avoided by Life cycle design for Steel” (MEDALS) aims to increase the recyclability of steels by removing or mitigating the effects of unwanted elements that accumulate during recycling, so-called tramp elements. The successful candidate shall be expected to perform advanced simulation and modelling to optimise the handling of scrap to improve the quality of recycled material. This may include thermodynamic modelling of pyrometallurgical systems, physical modelling of process phenomena and numerical modelling of accumulated sensor data. We are looking for a doctoral student for a multidisciplinary and collaborative project at the division of Biophysics, Department of Applied Physics. The goal of the project is to use advanced microchip-based cell culture methods to develop complex 3-dimensional in vitro models of solid tumors (tumor spheroids) to study how the tumor microenvironment affects drug and immunotherapy, and the responsiveness of cytotoxic lymphocytes. 17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Synthetic biology to enhance carbon conversion in cyanobacteria
Summary of PhD Program:
This Ph.D. position is in the Division of Systems Biology, part of the Department of Proteomics. The group of Paul Hudson does research on bacteria that fix carbon dioxide, such as cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria in particular are also models for carbon fixation in plant chloroplasts. This project will develop and apply new synthetic biology methods with the aim to enhance the rate of carbon fixation and conversion in cyanobacteria. Such methods include, for example, CRISPR/Cas gene editing, dynamic enzyme regulation, as well as screening of genetic libraries. The project will also make use of systems biology data, such as genomics and proteomics, to achieve these goals. The project is part of a consortium exploring microbial production of biofuel. The student will work with postdocs and there is the possibility for visits to collaborating laboratories in Finland and France.
