1. PhD student, specializing in analying university students’ impact on innovation
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The project addresses how universities through prior students impact innovation and entrepreneurship in business. The purpose of this project is to analyze the impacts of university students, with a particular foci upon the flow and career paths of alumni. Alumni are students who have received advanced university degrees. One of the included sub-projects compares and contrasts different groups of alumni. One group has advanced university degrees from engineering/ natural science and the second group with degrees from innovation/ entrepreneurship. A second included sub-project focuses specifically upon graduate students who are active simultaneously in both firms and universities, known as ‘dual affiliation’ or ‘industrially related’ students. The overall project as well as sub-projects thus examine how these different groups of alumni later impact innovation in large firms and entrepreneurship in smaller firms. Methods include developing and analyzing large-scale data, specifically register data as well as planning and conducting surveys of alumni.

2. PhD in Marine Sciences specializing in cold-water coral and sponge ecology, with a focus on Alaskan deep ecosystems
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Cold-water corals and sponges are found globally, at depths of just a few meters in temperate and polar ecosystems, to well beyond the photic zone and into the abyssal plains of every ocean. Many species are classed as ecosystem engineers, their morphology creating varied habitats that attract a myriad of associated species. As such the diversity of life around these cold corals and sponges can rival many tropical ecosystems. The Alaska region has some of the highest biodiversity and widespread distributions of deep-water corals and sponges in the Pacific region, yet despite their importance to benthic ecosystems ecological knowledge is poor for the majority of species. The general life history characteristics of deep corals and sponges (slow growth, late maturity, infrequent reproduction and recruitment) make them particularly susceptible to damage from anthropogenic impacts such as commercial bottom fishing. Understanding reproduction and recruitment processes is vital to understanding resilience and recovery from damage in these ecosystem engineers (and thus their associated fauna).

3. PhD student, specializing in analyzing innovation processes for new sustainability technology
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The project will study the innovation processes leading to new technologies and related businesses, which address sustainability challenges such as SDGs. The purpose of the project is to analyze knowledge-intensive innovation processes involving new technologies in businesses – and these processes may include universities, entrepreneurship and large companies – in Nordic countries which promote sustainability goals. An example of such technologies is carbon capture. Innovators and entrepreneurs need to develop and use new scientific and engineering knowledge, along with identifying business models, in order to further develop technologies which will help solve environmental problems. Moreover, sustainability standards provide a useful point of reference for decisions regarding business relationships to thereby help re-purpose some existing infrastructure such as petroleum pipelines for use to solve environmental challenges. The focus will be upon how innovators and entrepreneurs act, relative to the threats and opportunities for dissemination and application of new technologies which can address the societal sustainability goals. Methods include case study with extensive interviews, across at least 2 Nordic countries.

4. PhD in Marine Sciences specializing in cold-water coral reproductive ecology
Summary of Doctoral Project:
This Ph.D. project has some flexibility to tailor to the applicants major interests within reproductive ecology in cold water corals and had the potential to include collaborations and work off of Sweden’s coast with the reef building coral Lophelia pertusa, off of Patagonia with the deep water emerged coral Desmophyllum dianthus, and/or cataloging reproductive processes of New Zealand’s protected Primnoa spp. corals. As such, this Ph.D. project will work collaboratively with other cold-water coral researchers at the Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, as well as potentially international partners. This project will likely require travel and field work, spending time each year at sea on research vessels collecting samples in potentially harsh conditions.

8. Doctoral student in Health Care Science – Self-rated health in older adults
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The answer to the general question, “how would you rate your health?” with response options ranging from “very good” to “very poor,” has been one of the most widely used health indicators in research since the 1960s. In many studies, self-rated health predicts morbidity and mortality in older adults with great precision independent of known physical illness or other objective health measures. Although extensively used, our understanding of health in old age and the process that directs older adults in these self-ratings is still limited. Aging populations are a global challenge. Even though we spend a large part of our lives in good health, the risk of health problems, illness, and disabilities increase with age. To evaluate the health of older adults reliably, more knowledge is needed about the current way of self-assessing health.

12. Doctoral student in Natural Science, specialising in Biology
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Humane slaughter of animals is a priority for all animals used for food. Recent evidence demonstrates that decapod crustaceans (lobsters, crabs, shrimps and prawns) may experience pain and as such should be stunned to render them unconscious before killing. However, there is limited information on the extent to which these animals process pain and further what methods can be used to stun them humanely.
