1. Doctoral student in Cellular Biophysics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We have now an open position for a doctoral student and search for a candidate with a strong interest for applied biophysics and biophysical measurement technology. Our research projects concern development of new technology and new methods for applications primarily in cellbiology. We have choosen to study the energy supply in cells as an application for our new technologies. In the doctoral project, mitochondria in cultured cells and tissue will be studied. We want to explore some basic questions about the dynamics of mitochondria in relation to the cell’s energy needs, both over time and space. For those studies we need to develop both ultra-sensitive measurement technology and new methods to support studies of fine details and processes in living cells.

2. Doctoral student in Social Robotics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This project addresses the challenge of how to enable robots to learn in a scalable and cost-efficient manner by gradually acquiring new knowledge from non-expert, semi-situated teachers. To achieve this, computational methods will be developed for robots to query the semi-situated teachers (e.g. crowd workers) and incorporate the newly acquired knowledge into their existing decision-making to further use in situ. This project is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. This is a four-year time-limited position that can be extended up to a year with the inclusion of a maximum of 20% departmental duties, usually teaching.

3. Doctoral student in high-speed datacenter networking

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Today’s cloud and edge datacenters struggle to keep the pace of multi-100Gbps network interface card. A CPU transmitting 40Gbps of traffic consumes as much as 70% of its cycles, which cannot be used to run any applications. The recent rise of programmable high-speed hardware devices including P4 switches and SmartNICs have opened the doors to massive potential performance gains by offloading networking stacks from CPUs to hardware. Yet, reaping the benefits of such devices is today a largely unsolved problems. For example, multi-terabit per second network devices drop packets depending on specific time patterns. In this project, we plan to build radically new frameworks for controlling network and their performance in a programmatic manner. This research aims to publish work at the top venues in network systems (i.e., SIGCOMM and NSDI) and collaborate with industrial partners (e.g., Intel, Nvidia, Ericsson, Saab). In this project, you will have great possibilities to make impact in society and industry.

6. Doctoral student (licentiate)in method development for railway capacity analysis

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Research and education in planning of railway systems is conducted at the Division of Transport Planning. The aim is to improve the conditions for the railway and the competitiveness of freight and passenger rail transport to contribute to a sustainable development of the society. We are looking for a doctoral student who is interested in improving and further developing mathematical methods for capacity analysis. Capacity analysis aims to estimate the amount of rail traffic that can be operated on a given infrastructure, and analyse possible improvements of the capacity. Different methods to analyse the capacity exists, but a common method used in Sweden today is timetable compression. This method has some deficiencies, which the previous research project KAIN has addressed. The follow-up project KAIN 2, funded by the Swedish Transport Administration, is ongoing and continues with the method improvement and development that started in KAIN. This doctoral project is a part of KAIN 2 and as a doctoral student you will work with continued method development, e.g. to analyse stations and handle single-track lines, as well as using the method to analyse the capacity utilisation of the Swedish railway network.

7. Doctoral student (licentiate) in integration of high-speed rail and air services

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Research and education in planning of railway systems is conducted at the Division of Transport Planning. The aim is to improve the conditions for the railway and the competitiveness of freight and passenger rail transport to contribute to a sustainable development of the society. We are looking for a doctoral student who is interested in applying quantitative methods to explore the potentials of High-Speed Rail (HSR) and flight services in Sweden for domestic and international travel. In recent years, a growing number of researchers and practitioners have moved away from merely analysing the competition between HSR and air to viewing the HSR-air relation from an integration perspective. An integrated HSR-air service can be defined as one single complete journey with a fast and seamless change between modes of transport. Different solutions for the integration of HSR and air transport could be implemented, ranging from very basic integration to more sophisticated systems that include luggage integration, booking/fare integration, etc.

8. Ph.D. students in robust learning of dynamical nonlinear stochastic models

Summary of Doctoral Project:

System identification, or learning of dynamical models, treats how to construct models of dynamical systems based on sensor information. The area is multidisciplinary, involving mathematical statistics, machine learning, and systems and control theory. The methods are in widespread use in many application domains such as biotechnology, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Disturbances affecting the measurements is a fundamental problem as they can severely deteriorate the accuracy of the model. While there exists algorithms that can minimize the impact in an optimal way, they are computationally very expensive, especially for non-linear dynamical models. The aim in this project is to develop less computationally demanding algorithms, which have only marginally worse accuracy compared to the optimal ones. These algorithms should also be robust, meaning that they should be less sensitive to non-ideal settings and require less a prior information. Statistical analysis of the theoretical properties of the developed algorithms is an important ingredient of the project. The project offers rich possibilities to explore the intersection between control theory, mathematical statistics and machine learning for theoretically inclined PhD students.

10. Doctoral student (lic) in dynamic train-track-bridge interaction

Summary of Doctoral Project:

There is a large national and international interest to increase the capacity on existing railway lines, especially to increase axle loads for freight transports. To allow for increased axle loads on existing railway bridges, comprehensive analyses are required. In many cases the load capacity is limited by theoretical exceedance due to dynamic effects, especially for short span bridges. The reason is that the current regulations for the train-track-bridge interaction is very simplified and potentially over-conservative in many cases. This PhD-project will focus on the dynamic interaction of the coupled train-track-bridge system with application to freight traffic. The work will involve theoretical studies and simulations as well as processing larger quantities of collected data. The aim of the project is to increase the understanding of dynamic effects on bridges caused by freight traffic, especially related to track irregularities.

13. Doctoral student in large-scale distributed machine learning

Summary of Doctoral Project:

With the development of computing and communication technologies, and emerging data-driven applications, e.g., IoT based intelligent systems, social network analysis and vehicular networks, the volume of data for various learning systems increases explosively along with the number of involving computing nodes. Thus, large-scale distributed machine learning (e.g., federated learning, and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)) has been pervasive in our societies and industries. However, the practical performance of DML is often limited by various bottlenecks and is still far from theoretical upper limits. Thus, this project will develop efficient algorithms and schemes to achieve reliable, secure and low-complexity large-scale DML. One key approach is to exploit network and channel coding schemes. Theoretical analysis will be performed using learning and communication tools (e.g., graph model, coding and information theory, optimization). The result will also be verified by simulations with true data.
