4. PhD Program in Improved Approaches to Achieve Dump Stability through Pit Floor Blasting

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We invite highly motivated and committed candidates to apply for a fully funded PhD scholarship in the area of rock mechanics and computational geomechanics. The scholarship is funded by Glencore Coal Assets Australia. The aim of this partnership is to train a new cohort of critical-thinking problem-solvers who will apply their acquired research skills to solving day-to-day problems in mining as they arise, to allow for more reliable and sustainable operations and practice. In open pit mining, the low wall is built directly on the excavated floor, which constitutes a preferential sliding plane because it is generally planar. In addition, water and heavy machinery tend to knead and weaken the material composing the floor. It is standard industry practice to blast the pit floor in order to break and bulk up the underlying strata and, as a result, increase the interface friction between floor and low wall by generating interlocking. The current process is entirely empirical and not supported by rigorous science and consequently, it is not very efficient.

12. PhD Program in Progressive Voices/ Movements in Islamic Theology in the (Post-)Secular Society of 21st Century

Summary of Doctoral Project:

PhD research on “Progressive Voices/ Movements in Islamic Theology in the (Post-)Secular Society of 21st Century” Theology The main purpose of this recommended research project is to promote the academic conception of progressive voices in Islamic theology (preferably with a focus on Islamic liberation theology approaches) formed in response to the main challenges of living in (post-)secular, (post-)colonialist societies. The program involves the development and implementation of an evidence-based (as opposed to faith-based) research project (in Humanities or Social Sciences) on a topic relevant to the above theme. Corporate/mass media and mainstream discourses about Islam in the West focus heavily on regressive, violent movements, misleadingly portraying them as the dominant faces of Islamic cultures. The majority of Muslims regard such movements as in fact misappropriating Islamic values and theological ideas for the exclusionist political agendas and economic interests of their perpetrators. In the context of escalating terrorist actions in the name of faith, the existing lack of public knowledge about the diversity of views in the Islamic world contributes further to misconceptions and thereby to ethnocultural tensions.

15. PhD Program in Ultrafine Particle Deposition and Adhesion with Permeable Hydrophobic Surfaces

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Supervisor: Professor Grant Webber – The ARC Centre of Excellence for Enabling Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals is seeking creative and innovative PhD applicants to join our national collaborative Centre, to develop transformational technologies to reduce energy and water consumption and increase metals recovery. This project will aim to demonstrate the benefits of using natural fibres to stabilise oil emulsions by allowing fluid to be exchanged across droplets surfaces. ARC COE Logo – square set The Centre’s inclusive and equitable culture is supported by specific equity and diversity initiatives, which will support all members to achieve their career goals. Both flotation and oil agglomeration possess major disadvantages especially regarding the size of the particles that are able to be captured. Small particles trend to follow the fluid streamlines and they are deviated from both bubbles and droplets. In these cases, in order to be able to capture ultrafine particles, the hydrophobic force needs to be strong enough to overcome the hydrodynamic resistance force and, possibly, the presence of an electrical double layer repulsion.
