2. PhD on designing energy interfaces in underprivileged neighbourhoods

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Research has shown that particularly in households with lower incomes and higher levels of unemployment, residents tend to resist retrofit measures. This can be partly ascribed to distrust of housing providers, but is likely to be also related to the ways in which the technologies are designed. It can be expected that mismatches between the assumptions behind energy relevant systems such as indoor climate control, kitchen appliances and energy interfaces, and the needs, expectations and practices of people in diverse, underprivileged neighbourhoods can be large and complex. Such mismatches lower or even counteract the effectiveness of retrofit measures, while opportunities that build on already existing strategies to save energy might be missed.

3. PhD Design & Analysis of Integrated Ultrasonic Atomizer production Metal Powder

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing is a technique in which parts are produced by adding material. It allows for direct manufacturing of one of a kind, end-use parts with complex geometries directly from a digital building plan, in a cost and time efficient manner. In addition, AM has the ability to reduce the amount of waste, for example by reusing residual raw materials. One of the most advanced printing techniques for metals is powder bed-based printing, such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), where thin layers of micron-sized metal powder, with a thickness of 20-100 micron, are deposited in a build chamber and locally fused by a laser or an electron beam to create a solid part.

4. 2 PhD Student’s Plasma systems for CO2 capture and activation

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are continuing to grow, with an estimated increase of 60% as compared to 1990 and 1.3% per year on average since 2010. CO2 emissions from fossil fuels account for 38.8 Gt in 2019, 1.3 Gt more than 2018. A strong reduction of CO2 emissions has to be reached by 2030 in order to achieve the goal of a more limited rise in temperature of 2 °C. Energy supply, industry and transport are the key sectors to decarbonize, and solutions proposed to meet these targets must include carbon neutral fuels, power-to-fuels and carbon capture and utilization.

5. PhD position on hybrid data/ knowledge driven modeling of high-dimensional data

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Data driven modeling is widely used for optimizing modern digital systems, addressing our inability to model these systems from first principles due to their complexity and the high dimensional data they generate. However, the data driven models often contain millions of parameters, making it difficult to understand their behavior and to trust their output. Moreover, they require large amounts of labeled data, which is not always available. There are data driven approaches targeting these challenges (e.g. surrogate modeling or unsupervised learning), but they are often limited in their application. Knowledge driven approaches, on the other hand, are often explainable and can leverage expert knowledge to deal with few labeled samples, but struggle with noisy and high dimensional data.

8. PhD in Biomedical Engineering

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is seeking a talented PhD candidate to develop an experimentally-informed and validated computational model of the role of mechanics in new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis). The computational model is expected to enable the design of new strategies to control angiogenesis, which will have wide implications in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Sprouting angiogenesis is the biological process leading to the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones. Controlling angiogenesis is crucial for the treatment of several angiogenesis-related diseases, such as cancer, and the creation of functional tissue-engineered tissues. Unfortunately, translation of biological findings to applied settings has been hindered by unexpected in vivo responses to treatments. This highlights the complexity of angiogenesis, which responds to stimuli depending on small variations in the cell environment.

9. PhD in “Experiencing space: environmental psychology with a dash of big data”

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This project aims to address a fundamental question in the field of architecture and environmental psychology: is our emotional experience of indoor environments driven by the physical characteristics of the space or by the meaning we attribute to them? Our goal is to describe the impact of both physical features (for example, the presence of a window, scene brightness, symmetry) and meaning-related dimensions (for example, the possible activities that one could do in an environment, familiarity/novelty, whether one would be there alone or in the company of loved ones or strangers) on human emotional responses to indoor spaces. Imagine, for example, a living room and a hospital waiting room with similar furniture: would the presence of a window have the same effect on an occupants’ experience of each environment?

11. PhD Student Sorption Enhanced Ammonia Production

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Hydrogen is an important factor in the EU quest to drastically reduce GHG emissions and curb its use of fossil fuels. The storage and transport of hydrogen, however, faces important challenges which hinder its broad application as an alternative and zero emission fuel. Storage of hydrogen as a gas typically requires high-pressure tanks (up to 700 bar tank pressure); storage of hydrogen as a liquid requires cryogenic temperatures because the boiling point of hydrogen at one atmosphere pressure is -253C. Therefore, for several applications, ammonia rises as a rather prominent vector if it can be produced efficiently. The production is traditionally bound by the constraints of thermodynamics, which require high synthesis pressures, as well as temperatures. Thus, NH3 is produced centralised/large-scaled.

15. Call for PhD student: Temporalities of More-than-Human Care

Summary of Doctoral Project:

With societal concerns related to sustainability and inclusivity, there is a need for alternative care relations beyond the dominant (often exploitative) relationship centered around human values and temporalities. Time as material for design, in relation to processes of aging and degradation, practices of repair, and more recently, characteristics of living materials all have been emphasized in design and HCI literature. However, time is often a taken-for-granted aspect of thriving with humans and nonhumans through care. The risk of not looking into the temporalities of more-than-human care is in overextending our (humans’) agency in the ecosystem which threatens the livelihoods of humans and nonhumans. This PhD project aims to investigate the temporalities of more-than-human care for designing with and/or living with living artifacts.

16. PhD Position: Built cultural heritage: from diagnosis to intervention

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The lack of timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention threatens the preservation of built cultural heritage. For instance, modern concrete heritage is now reaching an age when deterioration and corrosion become significant. Reinforced concrete structures have started to be built in the Netherlands in the early 1900s. A large number of the surviving early 20th century structures are now listed monuments or well-known community landmarks. Structures build after World WII are now coming into attention, and facing challenges in terms of material damage. The most common damage types applicable are carbonation- and chloride-induced corrosion. Recent research has brought attention to the accelerated damage to built structures due to increased temperatures and relative humidities, increased CO2 levels, and more frequent drying and wetting cycles which induce salt damage.

18. PhD computational physical chemistry: modeling air-water interface

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In physics, “plasma” is a special excited gas, sometimes named “the fourth state of matter”, which is generated by supplying sufficient energy to the gas. Low temperature atmospheric pressure plasmas are specific types of plasmas which are typically generated by applying electromagnetic fields to matter, and they are therefore not in thermodynamic equilibrium. In many cases, average electron energy is significantly higher than the energy of heavy particles. This allows plasma sources to produce a chemically rich environment very close to room temperature; a condition which enables the delivery of reactive species in a non-destructive and beneficial way to different surfaces, even to extremely heat sensitive ones, such as organic tissues.
