1. PhD student in Machine Learning for life science within WASP Graduate School

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The focus of the research is to develop machine learning methods to model and design the three-dimensional structure of proteins. Deep learning approaches (such as AlphaFold) has recently revolutionized protein structure prediction, enabling highly accurate predictions of the atomic structures based on amino acid sequence information. Similar advancements are expected for the inverse problem, finding amino acid sequences that encode a desired atomic structure. This is referred to as protein design and has many applications in biomedicine, biotechnology and material science. The project aims to develop deep generative models to design proteins that can simultaneously adopt two conformations. Machine learning methods will be combined with state-of-the-art approaches for computational protein design.

4. Doctoral Student in Computer Science with focus on User-centric Code Review Tooling

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are offering one Ph.D. student position to a qualified applicant with an interest in software engineering, software technology and human-computer interaction, with funding provided by the WASP-funded DAPPER project. Code review is widely accepted as an essential part of professional software development practice and is one of the key collaborative activities that occur within teams of developers. However, despite this key role in software development and organisational practice, it is a relatively under characterised activity, especially with regard to the developer experience and to what extent tools are supporting the code review process. In our past work in this area, we have seen developers implicitly taking on different roles as code reviewers and with that they have different questions and information needs. However, despite varying reviewer needs the code review tooling is the same. DAPPER (Seamless, Tailored Code Review) is a research project with the goal of exploring how code review tooling can be made fit to purpose.

5. Doctoral student in Physics: Surface tomography for sustainable development

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The successful candidate will work with the development of a new method for surface characterisation of materials for sustainable development. It will include development of measurement strategies and, especially, programming software for advanced tomographic data analysis. Properties of surfaces and interfaces are crucial for several processes and devices, such as catalysis, electrochemistry, fuel cells and batteries, which are all of major importance in the transition to a sustainable society. These properties are, however, very difficult to investigate in real devices, especially under working conditions, and much of the R&D is based on “trial-and-error”. Fundamental understanding of properties of surfaces and interfaces would be highly valuable for a rational design of future devices.

6. Doctoral student in Biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The goal of this specific PhD project is to investigate how acute and chronic exposure to sublethal levels of pesticide (alone and in mixtures) commonly found in the environment affects the brain and functionality of insect species with diverse ecological functions. The project will involve development of behavioral experiments to be run primarily in the lab, but also adapted to semi-field and field conditions. Experiments will link ecotoxicological studies with neuro-cognitive defects. The PhD candidate will develop and apply deep learning and other image processing techniques to analyse impairments in visual and olfactory processing by quantifying and controlling flight trajectories of exposed and control insects within a newly developed virtual reality arena and more portable testing arenas. In addition, the project will include toxicity tests on single individuals, and at cellular level in dissected brains; electrophysiological recordings from sensory areas of the brain of insects.

7. Doctoral student in Biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PhD candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team at Lund University (7 PIs and 4 new PhD students) who over the next 6 years will collaborate to investigate the sublethal effects of commonly used pesticides in different species of insects. The project is highly interdisciplinary, involving research in fields such as analytical chemistry, genetics, metabolomics, ecology, and physiology, including collaborative laboratory, field and semi-field studies. Chemical insecticides play an integral role in controlling agricultural pests, however, their sublethal consequences for non-target species are often overlooked. Most of these pesticides are neurotoxins, yet how they affect the brain and its function in diverse insect species is poorly understood.

14. PhD student in oncology – breast cancer

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide, with approximately 8000 new cases per year in Sweden. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease at the molecular level. This heterogeneity translates into differences in clinical manifestation, patient therapies, and ultimately patient survival. There has been an intense focus on the molecular/genomic characteristics of breast cancer over the last decades. This has revealed intriguing new insights into the biology of the disease of which some findings have also now made its way into the clinic as treatment decision support tools. However, therapeutic progress has been different for the current clinical subtypes of breast cancer. While the majority of breast cancer patients today receive some form of targeted therapy, there are still clinical subgroups of the disease for which we currently lack effective targeted treatment, potentially due to still unmet detailed molecular characterization. Within the department we aim to maintain a good working environment based on mutual respect and consideration. We constantly strive to improve the conditions for work, development and participation for all employees.

20. Doctoral student in Biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The aim of this PhD project is to gain insight into the processing of visual input signals upstream of the central decision making circuit in the insect brain (the central complex (CX)) that is required to implement higher level processes (sensory integration and working memory) in this brain region. We will use bumblebees as our model system, as they use a range of sensory cues to perform complex navigation behaviors, and CX connectomics data is available to effectively integrate new functional data. The student will perform intracellular electrophysiological recordings from restrained and behaving bees, combined with computational modeling. These recordings will focus on two pathways: The visual pathway providing a range of different compass cues to support CX head direction coding, and the self-motion pathway (visual and proprioceptive) that provides forward and rotational velocity cues to support path integration in the CX.
