2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Calibration in Deep Learning for Zero Downtime in Cyber-Physical Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The vacancy is focused on calibration in deep learning. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have demonstrated significant predictive capabilities across various domains including computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing. Existing sophisticated neural network architectures are frequently integrated into practical applications. However, recent research has highlighted a crucial issue: despite their high accuracy achieved through training, deep neural networks often have overconfident and underconfident predictions. Deploying uncalibrated models in real-world systems poses substantial risks, particularly in safety-critical contexts like monitoring critical infrastructure systems. Calibrating deep learning models is essential to mitigate this risk, ensuring that the model’s posterior distribution accurately represents uncertainty without being excessively overconfident.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of a BioArtificial Kidney device consisting of living membranes

Summary of PhD Program:

Patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) need kidney replacement therapy (KRT) to survive, but current solutions (dialysis, kidney transplantation) are insufficient. The majority of ESKD patients is dependent on dialysis which places a heavy burden on their life. Removal of uremic toxins is inadequate, as all current dialysis therapies only mimic the filtration by kidney glomeruli, and do not replace any functionality of kidney tubules. BAKtotheFuture aims to develop a Bioartificial Kidney (BAK) that mimics tubular functionalities as an indispensable addition to current dialysis techniques.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Facilitating the co-creation of sponge measures and strategies

Summary of PhD Program:

Climate change exacerbates the frequency and intensity of both floods and droughts. Despite widespread recognition that improving the water retention capacity of landscapes or sponge functioning is a suitable approach to increase society’s resilience to climate change and its effects, implementation of such approaches is still lagging. A key challenge is to mobilise and involve all relevant actors for the inclusive and integrative design and implementation of effective sponge measures and to translate long-term, regional river basin strategies to practical action perspectives. To address this challenge, this fully funded PhD position aims to develop approaches for inclusive, integrative and effective co-creation and knowledge production processes and to support their implementation processes.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Micro-mechanics of dynamic friction in a single-grain contact

Summary of PhD Program:

Under highly accelerated slip, several physical phenomena contribute to the dynamic friction behavior of mechanical systems. Understanding friction in grain (micro)-scale contacts is relevant to several industrial and geo-mechanical systems. For example, loss of friction and slip causes errors in highly accurate positioning stages in lithography. Earthquakes also occur due to sudden slip when the frictional strength of the crushed rock granules in geological faults is overcome.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in value assessment of innovations in end-stage organ failure

Summary of PhD Program:

Competition for limited healthcare resources is a hallmark of any healthcare system. In practice, this translates into a waiting list problem: patients need to wait for a resource to become available, e.g. solid organ transplantation waiting lists and the associated staff and bed/room space needed for the surgery and post-operative care. Compared to timely patient management, delayed interventions commonly result in loss of quality of life, or even death, and additional costs and burden to the healthcare system.
