1. PhD position Femtosecond photoacoustic imaging through engineered acoustic metamaterials

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an emerging biomedical imaging modality for probing the optical properties of tissues at deep penetration depths. PAI leverages the photoacoustic effect wherein non-ionizing laser pulses targeted at soft tissues cause localized heating leading to thermal expansion and eventually wideband ultrasonic acoustic emissions. Acoustic Metamaterials (literally meaning – “beyond materials”) are architected materials with carefully engineered microstructures to exhibit material and acoustic properties that are either tunable or exotic (oftentimes not found in nature). Supported by advances in additive manufacturing, the miniaturization of structures to material length scales enables wave manipulations such as acoustic wave guiding, tunable acoustic bandgaps, negative acoustic refractive indices, acoustic cloaking, acoustic superlensing, and many more. In this project, these two scientific fields are combined to overcome sensitivity challenges in photoacoustic signals detection. By designing acoustic metamaterials to be used as intermediate medium between tissue and transducer, high frequency photoacoustic signals could potentially be detected and even amplified.

2. PhD position ERC ViSioN: Virus Spread in Networks

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The project “Virus Spread in Networks” (ViSioN) is funded by ERC as an Advanced Grant 2020. ViSioN starts from a Network Science view on virus spread in networks in which the duality between the virus transmission process and the contact graph is key. The devastating Corona crisis reveals two major shortcomings in traditional epidemiology. First, it ignores the human contact graph and implicitly assumes a homogeneous population without specific graph structure. Second, most models for the virus spreading process relate to a Markovian setting, with exponential infection and curing times, leading to an exponential decay of the epidemic. Measurements, however, point to significantly different infection and curing time distributions. In addition, digital technology can help in constructing the contact graph and combined with medical testing, all infected can be detected. ViSioN aims to develop the theory of non-Markovian epidemic process on networks, a surprisingly missing element today, because non-Markovian theory is needed to tell, based on the characteristic infection and curing times of the virus, how long a pandemic will last and when the peak occurs. Next, ViSioN will combine all available measurement technologies to construct the best possible contact graph via temporal networking or adaptive networking.

7. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This PhD aims at bridging this gap theoretically and empirically, using the Netherlands as a case study. From the pool of existing explanations of economic inequality and urban segregation (such as: assortative mating, selective migration, urban form, contextual effects etc.), which are the most relevant ones to explain economic segregation in cities in general, and in Dutch cities in particular? How do they interact, theoretically and empirically? The idea is to integrate existing multidisciplinary knowledge about economic inequality and urban segregation at three geographical scales: national, urban and individual. More specifically, the first objective of the PhD is to identify the mechanisms which explain the evolution of urban economic segregation in general (through an extensive and multidisciplinary literature review), to select and prioritise them, to analyse their compatibility and their potential interactions (for instance: how different urban forms influence the magnitude of contextual effects).

8. PhD on development of new disordered electrode materials for batteries

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We will be investigating a new class of materials featuring atomic-scale disorder between mobile light metal ions (A e.g. Li+, Na+) and transition metals (M; e.g. Co, Fe). This is a new concept, in stark contrast to conventional electrode materials in which A and M are perfectly segregated in alternating atomic layers. The disordered materials have already shown great promise for increased performance (higher capacity, higher rate capability, slower aging) that could translate directly to lighter, faster-charging, longer-lasting next-generation batteries, respectively. Beyond performance, the disordered concept allows for more flexibility on the choice of transition metal(s) used which directly affects the economic potential and societal impact in view of battery mass-production. Current state-of-the-art lithium-ion technology heavily relies on cobalt and nickel. These are both rather rare, costly-to-produce (and in the case of cobalt, ethically unacceptable, see e.g. link) metals which go directly against the principles of sustainability, environmental protection and the green energy transition.

9. PhD position on mass transport modelling from GRACE/GRACE-FO data

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The continued observation of the temporal changes of the Earth’s gravity field is essential for understanding mass transport, caused by processes in the oceans and atmosphere, by melting ice caps and glaciers, by large-scale ground water use, among others. Mass transport is an essential climate variable, and its monitoring is required for understanding climate change. It is also crucial for monitoring hydrological processes at global and regional scales, thereby providing information for water security relevant for agriculture and drink water supply of billions of people worldwide. Space-borne gravimetry, notably in the form of the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE), GRACE Follow-On missions, has provided observations covering two decades, but their full information content remains underutilized. Without fully exploiting the spatial and temporal resolution of gravimetric data, the ability to separate the underlying geophysical processes is not possible, crippling our understanding of the effects of climate change.

12. PhD: 3D Unsteady CFD model for Multi-Rotor Multi-Body Fluid Structure Interaction

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The main objective behind this project is to develop a 3D Hybrid solver implemented in OpenFOAM purposed for lift-driven aerodynamics such as in wind energy and aircraft. More specifically, this PhD project focuses on the addition of fluid-structure interaction capability by introducing a combination of domain deformation and partitioned fluid-structure coupling methods. In a region close to solid boundaries the flow, the full Navier-Stokes equations are solved on a deforming (meshed) domain and coupled to a structure dynamics model (possibly with an arbitrary turbulence model or DNS, the limitations being the computational power and the physical properties of the flow); outside of that region, the flow is solved with a Lagrangian (meshless) vortex particle method. In this hybrid approach, the complexity and size of the deforming mesh problem is substantially reduced as it is only required for a small domain close to the body. Also, interaction between different bodies moving in each other’s vicinity is facilitated through the Lagrangian (meshless) vortex particle.

16. PHD Position Design and build disrupting technology for high-resolution microscopy with monochromatic electrons

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Electron microscopes are essential systems for ultra-high-resolution imaging and analysis of materials in science and industry. For many imaging and analysis techniques however, the intrinsic energy spread of the emitted electrons from a high brightness electron source (typically 0.4 – 1 eV) is too large and would need to be reduced to 10 meV range. Electron monochromators exist but are technically complicated and are thus only implemented in very expensive high-end systems. In this project, you will work on a radically new monochromator concept to reduce electron energy spread making use of microfabrication technology. You will design and fabricate the monochromator componentsF together with our microfabrication specialists and you will perform the experimental characterizations. Successful device will be implemented in the state-of-the-art electron microscopes and applications towards extremely low voltage SEM and high-resolution energy loss spectroscopy will be investigated. Ultimately, this work should pave the way for a very powerful but still low-cost electron microscopy component that can fundamentally change the field of electron microscopy.

21. PhD project in operations & maintenance optimization of offshore wind

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Wind energy is set to be a major contributor to the decarbonisation of the energy sector. Offshore wind farms are being built without subsidy, but successful offer prices are predicted to further reduce cost. Operation & Maintenance (O&M) can contribute up to 30% of the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of offshore wind. Making decisions for planning and scheduling of maintenance is important and plays a critical role in reducing the cost and realizing the scale of wind power. Blade failure reduces turbine yield or in extreme cases stops turbine operation and requires replacement which is a time-consuming and costly operation involving heavy lift vessels offshore. The NWO project Holi-DOCTOR aims to investigate monitoring techniques including sound and vibration measurements and infrared measurements in a holistic framework. Timely intervention informed by effective monitoring can aid remedial action, avoiding full replacement and finally help optimize O&M schedules and improve the efficiency of wind turbine maintenance.

22. PhD position on Developing hematopoietic stem cell cultivation in a bioreactor

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This project is part of a consortium that aims to unravel hereditary anemias using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for the purpose of gaining more fundamental knowledge and novel therapies. This consortium focuses on hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Mature blood cells are continuously replenished by HSCs to make sure that essential mechanisms remain functional, such as oxygen tranport and defence again pathogens. The production of new blood cells is impaired in a plethora of diseases. Blood transfusion is often the only therapeutic option and stem cell transplantation the only curative treatment. To obtain viable therapies, it is essential to build up know-how on large scale cultivation of iPSC-derived autologous HSC transplantation production. The TU Delft contributes to this consortium with two PhD positions of which one is described in this vacancy. The PhD position in this vacancy is experimental and will establish HSC production at lab-scale. The second PhD position is computational and focussed on employing computational fluid dynamic simulations to design bioreactor cultivations.

23. PhD position in Explainable Combinatorial Optimisation

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to work on the intersection between combinatorial optimisation, AI, and explainability. Modern optimisation methods are invaluable in assisting decision-makers in complex problems with difficult constraints, e.g., scheduling, production-planning, logistics, and transportation. However a glaring problem is that, even though the final solutions provided by the algorithms may be optimised, it may be difficult to understand why the reasoning behind the algorithmic decisions. This is particularly a problem in cases where the algorithm is expected to interact with a human decision-maker who needs to justify the decisions to relevant stakeholders. The goal of the project is to develop novel combinatorial optimisation methods that not only exhibit excellent performance, but also concisely break down the main factors behind automated decision-making in a way that is easy for humans to interpret.

24. PhD Position in Experimental Soil Mechanics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Organic soils are extremely vulnerable to climate change as increased temperatures accelerate drying, shrinkage and decomposition of the organic matter. Gases such as CH4 and CO2 produced by the decomposition of the organic matter saturate the pore fluid and can eventually be exsolved as bubbles by temperature increase, atmospheric pressure decrease, and unloading. Gas bubbles in soils can compromise the performance and safety of structures and infrastructure with irreversible deformations and reduction of resistance. Research on the effects of gas bubbles on the response of organic soils is still at an early stage and a comprehensive geotechnical model for the effects of gas in organic soils is still lagging behind. The project aims at deepening the understanding and modelling of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of organic soils containing gas bubbles to mitigate the impact of climate-related hazards in natural organic soils.

35. PhD position: Vulnerability scanning, incident response and security benchmarking

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are in an age of regular news stories about vulnerabilities in enterprise IT being exploited, for theft of customer data, ransomware and other nefarious purposes. The impact of these attacks seem to be rising, yet organisations are still struggling to keep their systems patched. The reality is that organisations face a painful dilemma: patch fast and comprehensively and incur downtime and potential failures; or patch slow and selectively and risk getting compromised by attacks. As a result, organisations take a long time to patch even critical security vulnerabilities. The way to get out of this catch-22 is to radically change the risk governance of patching. That is the objective of the NWO-funded THESEUS project. In this project, we work with closely with academic institutions, like VU Amsterdam, Utrecht and Tilburg Univertisies; and real-world partner organisations, such as KLM-AirFrance, Rijkswaterstaat, City of Amsterdam, City of The Hague, KPN, CyberSprint, and the National Cyber Security Center. We engage with researchers and professionals to explore questions of vulnerability scanning, automatic vulnerability and patch triaging, risk profiling and benchmarking organisations with respect to their security posture and patch status.

39. PhD position Graph-based Machine Learning for Power System State Estimation

Summary of Doctoral Project:

TU Delft is a top tier university and is exceedingly active in the field of Artificial intelligence and the TU Delft’s campus has strong expertise in energy systems. Energy systems are the backbone of our modern society, but are becoming increasingly complex and challenging to operate as renewable energy, heating and transport sectors are integrated into the system. It’s crucially important that energy systems are sustainable, reliable and effective, now and in the future. As part of your 4-year PhD project, you will develop novel graph-based machine learning algorithms for state estimation of energy systems. The scientific challenge is to design a real-time state estimator for the distribution system that accounts for future needs. The future system requires tasks to manage flexibility provisions from distribution systems, effective anomaly detection, congestion management, and fraud detection. State estimation is an important task where the operator considers very little noisy measurement data to infer the full system state. However, often, the accuracy is used to infer the full state while the true state is seldom known and can only be reproduced in computer simulations. Therefore, you will explore a novel approach investigating graph neural networks and structural information and learn the state-estimator semi-supervised enforcing known constraints.

46. PhD: Eco-efficient aircraft routing to largely reduce climate impact due to warming contrails

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Aviation is a strong and growing sector that guarantees long-range mobility. However, it also contributes significantly to climate change. Emissions from aircraft increase the atmospheric concentrations of e.g., carbon dioxide, ozone, and water vapour. Another very important effect is the formation of contrails, which contribute to climate change with a relatively large uncertaines. Futhermore, the effects of contrails can be waming or cooling depending on time and location. First results indicate that a slight re-routing and avoiding regions with warming contrail formation, significantly reduce aviation’s contribution to climate change. Your work will be part of the European project BeCoM, which aims at improving the prediction of persistent contrails with the strong support of the enhanced routine humidity measurements at the cruise level, enabling reliable mitigation of aviation’s climate impact driven by climate-based policy and regulations. These eco-efficient solutions will be investigated with an Earth-System Model, which includes an air traffic simulator, allowing for various air traffic optimisations.

51. PhD Position next generation thermal management for fuel cells for the maritime industry

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The maritime industry is under pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as hazardous air pollutants. Therefore, it is vital that maritime power- and energy systems are replaced with carbon-free sources of energy. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are increasingly considered as a highly efficient, low emission, fuel-flexible alternative for ships. However, low power densities, slow load transients and high capital cost have hindered large scale deployment in the maritime sector so far. These difficulties may potentially be overcome by reconsidering the thermal management of SOFCs. In order to use fuel cells in maritime applications, they should be able to handle sudden load fluctuations, for example for maneuvering or lifting operations. However, sudden load changes may result in large temperature gradients that can be detrimental to the long-term operation of fuel cells. To overcome both high power consumption of the cathode air compressor as well as thermal overloading, liquid cooling could replace the conventional air cooling. However, this introduces additional challenges in fuel cell system design and operation.

54. PhD Position in high-precision opto-mechanical microchips to analyse cell bio-mechanics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Throughout the lifetime of human beings, cell growth and differentiation is a dynamic process of creating and preserving organs. Cells are complex biological units and their behaviour is a complex interplay between the individual cells and their surroundings. Their fate is guided by physical and mechanical cues such as local geometry, surface properties and mechanical stiffness. However, much of this complex and dynamic behaviour is not well understood as it requires advanced characterization platforms that can unravel cell bio-mechanics at very small (nano and micro) length scales. In this project, we aim to utilize silicon photonics and optomechanical microchip technology to realize the next-generation platform for cell analysis. This revolutionary opto-mechanical sensory systems can be used to study cells by dynamically measuring their morphological, mechanical, and molecular properties at high speed, high resolution, and in 3D. To create such novel sensory systems, you will use concepts based on integrated photonics (chips that work with light), opto-mechanical sensing (sensing mechanical deformations with light), biomaterial engineering (materials with different shapes and stiffnesses that give mechanical cues to cells), and high-resolution 3D bio-printing. The research includes all aspects of designing, characterizing, fabricating, and incorporating opto-mechanical sensory systems in biomedical devices.

4. PhD in Smart Control of Turbulence for Sustainable Aviation

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In collaboration with industry, TU Delft has recently started the Turbulence Task Force project. This task force will identify, validate, and prepare for industrial implementation, the most promising and commercially attractive technology for the reduction of turbulent drag in aviation. Within the task force, this PhD project is concerned with the manipulation of the turbulent fluid layer adjacent to the surface, particularly from the perspective of active (flow) control. This implies that the evolving turbulence needs to be manipulated with a wall-based sensing and actuation system with the aim to learn (1) which instantaneous features of the turbulent flow are most receptive to control, and (2) which controlled features result in the greatest performance gain and why. To address these challenges, control techniques, such as extremum-seeking control in multi-input/output systems, possibly combined with real-time implementations of other machine learning methods, are a promising way forward. The work will be mainly experimentally using state-of-the-art (optical) measurements techniques and flow facilities.

5. PhD Position Postural stabilization and motion comfort in automated vehicles

Summary of Doctoral Project:

TU Delft, the Netherlands, invites applications for a PhD student to investigate human postural stabilization in relation to motion perception and motion comfort. Automated driving holds great promise to provide safe and sustainable transport. Automation will allow users to take their eyes off the road, freeing up time for work or leisure activities. This will require high comfort levels achieved by smooth driving styles and innovative interiors. A particular concern is “self-driving car sickness”. A range of theories and models associate motion sickness with motion perception and postural stabilization. Due to a multitude of factors existing models fail to predict motion comfort in automated driving. Effects of 3D motion and the modulating role of vision are not sufficiently captured. The relation between motion comfort and postural stabilization sees little empirical support.

7. Computational materials modelling for space

Summary of Doctoral Project:

1 PhD position is available under the QAIMS (Quantum-enhanced Artificial Intelligence for sustainable Materials and Structural design in aerospace) lab of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of TU Delft. It falls in the exciting interdisciplinary area of Machine Learning (ML), Quantum Computing (QC), and computational materials modelling. When energetic particles interact with materials in space environment, they can cause defects and resultant property degradation. Classical ab initio density functional theory calculations are limited by small scale and short time whereas classical molecular dynamics are limited by insufficient accuracy. Machine learning is expected to bridge the gap by enabling a more accurate description of a material at atomic level at a relatively low computational cost. This PhD project is about to take this idea a step further, namely enhancing the AI models using QC to allow them to learn and predict “quantum mechanically”.

How to Write Motivation Letter for PhD Program?

However a glaring problem is that, even though the final solutions provided by the algorithms may be optimised, it may be difficult to understand the reasoning behind the algorithmic decisions.

12. PhD researcher on the miniaturisation and integration of modular flow control components for microfluidic systems

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Microfluidics technology is an important enabler for many applications in life-sciences, health care and chemical / pharma industry. An example is the upcoming field of Organ-On-Chip (OOC), in which organ functions and their biophysical environment are mimicked on a chip. The processes of organ and medium interaction are studied on a chip, reducing the need for animal testing. However, current microfluidics technology, particularly the ancillary components like pumps, flow controllers and switch-valves are all bulky and this is a bottleneck in creating complex microfluidic systems. There are examples of small form factor components, however, these are often not designed from a modular integration perspective. We are on a mission to build a novel generic design system that uses a modular approach consisting of miniaturized flow control components that allows easy configuration, integration and operation of complex microfluidic systems for research and industrial purposes.

13. PhD Position Interaction-Aware Motion Planning

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In this project we will take a holistic view on the interaction of mobile robots and humans, where we will consider multiple spatio-temporal granularities ranging from individual interactions to the interaction of a robot fleet with the humans in a city, and from short term (local) to long term (global) effects of the interaction. You will employ reinforcement learning tools to build local and global intuition models of the interaction between robots and their environment. Then, you will integrate these intuition models in uncertainty-aware trajectory optimization methods to compute safe interaction-aware trajectories for mobile robots. Within the project, you will be responsible for motion planning and collaborate with other researchers responsible for task assignment and perception. Thus, you will make a fundamental contribution towards intuitive multi-robot interaction, making it possible for teams of mobile robots to safely interact in human-centric environments and enabling a new level of automation in factories and cities.

14. PhD: Dynamics of proteins in cell nuclei studied by super-resolution microscopy

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In order to keep human bodies healthy, cells have to continuously adjust to stress, such as DNA damage, nutrient deficiency and mechanical stress. Recently, the lamin family of cytoskeletal proteins have emerged as a key regulator of cell response to intrinsic and environmental stimuli. Lamins are the main architectural proteins of the nucleus and form a fibrous, highly stable meshwork underlying the inner nuclear membrane. The cell’s stress response triggers one of the lamin types, prelamin A, to accumulate, which affects important cellular processes such as cell cycle progression, DNA-replication, chromatin remodeling and senescence. Fundamental knowledge on the lamin-dependent regulatory mechanism that controls DNA replication, and replication fork stalling leading to cell senescence, is still lacking. DNA replication is a process fundamental to all life, and lamins have been found to regulate DNA replication through local chromosome compaction and direct interaction with the replication proteins. Furthermore, during S phase, the nucleoplasmic distribution of lamins changes with altering patterns of DNA replication.

15. PhD: Unlocking ultrafast spectroscopy to observe catalytic conversions

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Chinese sign for Catalyst is marriage broker, as it decreases the energy for two molecules to react. Many intermediates in the reaction process are too short-lived to detect. The aim is here, to heat the catalysts extremely fast with femtosecond laser pulses to jumpstart the reaction such that the intermediates can be detected with pump-probe spectroscopy. The Dutch Research Foundation NWO has awarded a prestigious VIDI grant to Monique A. van der Veen for this research. Catalysts, especially solid, heterogeneous catalysts are the workhorses of the chemical industry as they lower the energy needed for a reaction to occur. To this end we need to develop a tremendous amount of new catalytic processes that are energy-efficient and selective. Detailed insight into the reaction mechanism can accelerate the development of radically new catalytic processes.

22. PhD position Wall bounded turbulence: from the instantaneous to the statistical

Summary of Doctoral Project:

One of the still open questions in wall turbulence is to link instantaneous flow features with the currently available wealth of statistical insights: how are these structures “put together” in time in order to create the well-established statistical picture? This is especially crucial in high-Reynolds number flows, which are still unattainable by direct numerical simulations and for which time-resolved experimental data are relatively scarce. The goal of this PhD project is to fill this gap in available data but also in the subsequent analysis. The focus will be coherent structures in the logarithmic and wake regions and specifically their time footprint and evolution. The results will be pivotal both from a fundamental standpoint but more importantly as input for fine-tuning low-order models and optimizing drag reduction strategies, many of which still rely on statistical information.

23. PhD position on Analysis and control of max-min-plus-scaling systems in a discrete-event framework

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Discrete-event systems form a large class of dynamic systems in which the evolution of the system is driven by the occurrence of certain discrete events. This in contrast to discrete-time systems where the evolution depends on the clock. Discrete-event systems with only synchronization and no concurrency can be modeled by a max-plus linear model. This is a model in which the system equation consists of max and plus operations (e.g. paper flow in a printer or predictive scheduling for container terminals). When competition plays a role (e.g. first-come-first-serve mechanisms) we obtain a max-min-plus system. This is a model in which the system equation consists of max, min, and plus operations (e.g. product flow in a production system with competition). Occasionally the processing times in a system will depend on external parameters or previous values of the state and input. Such a system can written as a max-plus linear-parameter-varying system, or equivalently as a max-min-plus-scaling (MMPS) system (e.g. traffic management on an urban railway line).

27. PhD Position Energy Policy Innovation

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are looking for a curious, driven, and perseverant PhD candidate to conduct research on energy policy innovation as part of the DECIPHER project. Funded by the EU Horizon program, DECIPHER will create a decision-making framework for holistic assessment of environmental policy alternatives. The dual crises of climate change and biodiversity increase the urgency for the adoption and implementation of efficient, inclusive, and legitimate environmental policies. Mainstream economic methods currently used in the design of environmental policies, however, fail to capture the complexity of the economy-energy-environment nexus. Rather, policy analysis is informed by a narrow set of metrics that do not encompass broader considerations of justice, sustainability, and wellbeing and fail to account for policy feasibility and policy resilience. Moving beyond the state-of-the-art, DECIPHER will employ an interdisciplinary, systems approach to develop and apply a decision-making framework for ‘real world’ assessment of flagship EU policies. By integrating co-creation, policy sciences’ theories, empirical analysis, and biophysical, economic, and energy modelling, the project will significantly improve environmental decision-making on biodiversity and climate change and, thereby, enhance environmental policy effectiveness.

31. PhD Position Optical Methodologies for Protein Sequencing

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Genome sequencing has become a standard technology in biomedical research. The technique is used to diagnose inherited diseases, target treatments, and identify health risks. Certain gene variants can increase a person’s risk of diseases such as cancer and heart conditions. This technology makes use of innovative reagents, in combination with an optical microscope. A major drawback of this technology is that it only reveals the genetic baseline of biological processes. The ability to measure the make-up of not only the genome but of proteins and protein expression, would create an enormous scientific opportunity as proteins are at the basis of all biological processes. We envision the realization of such protein sequencing methodology by building on recent developments in super-resolution microscopy. Super-resolution microscopy allows for circumventing the diffraction limit, to visualize otherwise invisible details within the cell. Super-resolution microscopy combines clever optical microscope designs followed by sophisticated image reconstruction.

34. PhD position Flexible Floating Structure Modelling and Analysis

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The transformation of our energy systems from fossil fuel-based to renable-based systems is calling for innovative solutions to harvest renewable energies at land, at sea and in space. 35. PhD Position Design of new flatfish stimulation devices

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Fisheries targeting sole and plaice typically use heavy tickler chains dragged through the sediment to startle and catch the fish. This technique results in (1) low catch selectivity with high bycatch, (2) high fuel costs owing to high drag, and (3) severe environmental impact (bottom disturbance, CO2 production, and release of pollutants). Therefore, a better fishing technique without tickler chains is required. Supported by the Applied and Engineering Sciences of NWO (the Netherlands Science Foundation), Wageningen University, Wageningen Marine Research, and Delft University of Technology aim to develop new catching techniques that are more efficient with a reduced environmental impact. To help achieving this, the PhD candidate will study the physics of acoustic, optical, hydraulic and mechanical stimuli and based on this knowledge develop appropriately dimensioned actuators.

36. PhD Position Data-driven identification and control of hydrodynamically coupled floating structures

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Offshore wind farms, wave-energy converter arrays, and maneuvering ship convoys all involve hydrodynamically-coupled systems of multiple floating structures. The flow around each structure produces an unsteady wake that can impact neighboring structures, and cause force and kinematic fluctuations. These interactions may reduce operational efficiency, induce fatigue loading and thus maintenance costs, and can even lead to system failure. This four-year PhD project will develop methods for the identification of such dynamic interactions and the design of controllers that mitigate the force fluctuations on hydrodynamically interacting structures. The ultimate goal is to leverage these results to develop harm-minimization strategies that prevent the potential deleterious effects of such wake-structure interactions.

37. PhD Position Collaborative Control for Autonomous Ships in Multi-Vessel Environments

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Over the last decade autonomous shipping has started to receive significant attention in view of improving efficiency challenges in the transport domain. Nowadays research places many efforts on the technological development and improvement of manoeuvring and intelligent control for individual autonomous ships. At the same time, it is expected that the future autonomous ships will not be operating only by themselves, but will be navigating in (sometimes crowded) multi-vessel environments, encountering numerous other waterway users and infrastructure operators (e.g. in large port areas such as the Port of Rotterdam, or in inner-city waterway networks as found in the city of Amsterdam). Moving towards this future situations in which both autonomous and human-operated ships are operating on and around waterways, the investigation and integration of new ways of interaction between autonomous ships and their environments in control methods, and being able to provide insight in guarantees on transport safety and efficiency in a society with sustainability considerations, become more and more important.

39. PhD position

In 2016 Breakthrough Prize Foundation announced a $100 million initiative to realize microchip satellite for unmanned interstellar travel. By attaching these microchips to low-mass sails which are meters large and only nanometers thick, these satellites could be accelerated to ultra-fast speeds with lasers. This type of sail material would allow us to shorten times to Alpha Centauri, our nearest star, from 10,000 years to only 20 years – completely changing humanity’s reach within the universe. These unique capbailities that novel sail materials could open, but it’s also recognized by leading experts around the world that the largest challenge will be developing the lightsail. Why is that? Well, if one looks at the microchip, it need to be made smaller in x, y and z – which is in line with the conventional miniaturization we’ve been doing over the last half century. But the lightsails stand as a unique challenge because it’s the only nanoscale components which needs to be expanded to meter scales. Our lab has been pioneering metamaterials with extreme aspect ratio putting us in a unique position to bring this technology within reach.
