1. PhD Position in Organic Redox Flow Batteries

Summary of PhD Program:

The increased implementation of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind in the energy system results in an electricity production less adapted to the consumption. A solution is to store energy for shorter or longer periods in batteries. In Redox Flow Batteries (RFB), the energy is stored in tanks with redox-active solutions and not in solid materials as in conventional batteries. The design makes them particularly suitable for medium and large-scale stationary energy storage. Today’s commercial RFBs are based on metal ions typically from vanadium, which is scarce, expensive and toxic. A hot research area is to find more environmentally friendly and less costly organic redox-active substances as alternatives.

4. PhD Position in Bridge Engineering – new concepts for high speed tracks

Summary of PhD Program:

Construction of new and restauration of existing railway lines for higher train speeds demands bridges built with minimized environmental impact. This motivates studies of new design and construction solutions contributing to reduced resource consumption and reduced emissions. The development of fossil free steel has reached far and steel bridges can be made lighter than conventional concrete bridges, which gives positive effects such as reduced transport volumes, easier construction, and less complex foundation arrangements. Further environmental benefits can be attained if weathering steel is used, which do not have to be surface treated and painted over the intended service life.

6. PhD Position in deep generative models for cancer research

Summary of PhD Program:

Variational autoencoders (VAEs), a part of the Variational inference (VI) methodology, has recently become important in analysis of large single-cell and spatial bio data. Yet, employing them for posterior approximations in Bayesian phylogenetics is a difficult problem. Clear examples of successful applications are still outstanding. Following recent trends in VAE research, one may hypothesize that it may be addressed by incorporating inductive biases, modeling more advanced prior distributions, and/or via architecture design. This project aims to explore the possibility of employing VAEs or other deep generative models in the setting of somatic cancer evolution and Bayesian phylogenetics. By doing so, the Ph.D. will simultaneously contribute to two highly impactful scientific fields: computational bio/cancer and Bayesian inference in deep learning.

21. PhD Position in Electricity Hedge Markets in Nordic Region

Summary of PhD Program:

Around the world, electricity spot prices tend to be highly volatile, varying both across time and across locations on the network. For this reason, as with many other commodities, financial markets have emerged for mitigating the risk and providing signals to investors. The market participants who trade in electricity across different pricing areas are exposed to locational basis risk – the difference in the price between the point at which the electricity is injected into the network and the point at which it is withdrawn. However, these inter-locational hedging instruments have not been subject to the same degree of development or attention as the inter-temporal hedging instruments. The Electricity Price Area Differentials or EPAD contract is one such inter-locational hedging instrument which allows members on the power exchange to hedge against the area-price risk.

29. PhD Position in Chemical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The latest IPCC report highlights the need for CO2 capture and storage (CCS) to meet the Paris Agreement target. Sweden, for example, has committed to achieving truly zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2045 and achieving negative emissions in the following years. Therefore, there is a need for CO2 capture units which should be deployed on a large scale. In fact, CO2 capture units are based on an established technology for handling syngas in a closed circuit at high pressure. The application to flue gas is quite different. In fact, the latest CCS uses MEA solvents and costs >1 TWh/MT of CO2 captured, leads to pollution risks and breaks down fast/high chemical usage. Recent life cycle analyzes have shown that the total cost of MEA-CCS comes close to canceling out the benefits.

Research and education in planning of railway systems is conducted at the Division of Transport Planning. The aim is to improve the conditions for the railway and the competitiveness of freight and passenger rail transport to contribute to a sustainable development of the society. We are looking for a doctoral student who is interested in improving and further developing mathematical methods for capacity analysis. Capacity analysis aims to estimate the amount of rail traffic that can be operated on a given infrastructure, and analyse possible improvements of the capacity. Different methods to analyse the capacity exists, but a common method used in Sweden today is timetable compression. This method has some deficiencies, which the previous research project KAIN has addressed. The follow-up project KAIN 2, funded by the Swedish Transport Administration, is ongoing and continues with the method improvement and development that started in KAIN. This doctoral project is a part of KAIN 2 and as a doctoral student you will work with continued method development, e.g. to analyse stations and handle single-track lines, as well as using the method to analyse the capacity utilisation of the Swedish railway network.

7. Doctoral student (licentiate) in integration of high-speed rail and air services

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Research and education in planning of railway systems is conducted at the Division of Transport Planning. The aim is to improve the conditions for the railway and the competitiveness of freight and passenger rail transport to contribute to a sustainable development of the society. We are looking for a doctoral student who is interested in applying quantitative methods to explore the potentials of High-Speed Rail (HSR) and flight services in Sweden for domestic and international travel. In recent years, a growing number of researchers and practitioners have moved away from merely analysing the competition between HSR and air to viewing the HSR-air relation from an integration perspective. An integrated HSR-air service can be defined as one single complete journey with a fast and seamless change between modes of transport. Different solutions for the integration of HSR and air transport could be implemented, ranging from very basic integration to more sophisticated systems that include luggage integration, booking/fare integration, etc.

8. Ph.D. students in robust learning of dynamical nonlinear stochastic models

Summary of Doctoral Project:

System identification, or learning of dynamical models, treats how to construct models of dynamical systems based on sensor information. The area is multidisciplinary, involving mathematical statistics, machine learning, and systems and control theory. The methods are in widespread use in many application domains such as biotechnology, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Disturbances affecting the measurements is a fundamental problem as they can severely deteriorate the accuracy of the model. While there exists algorithms that can minimize the impact in an optimal way, they are computationally very expensive, especially for non-linear dynamical models. The aim in this project is to develop less computationally demanding algorithms, which have only marginally worse accuracy compared to the optimal ones. These algorithms should also be robust, meaning that they should be less sensitive to non-ideal settings and require less a prior information. Statistical analysis of the theoretical properties of the developed algorithms is an important ingredient of the project. The project offers rich possibilities to explore the intersection between control theory, mathematical statistics and machine learning for theoretically inclined PhD students.

10. Doctoral student (lic) in dynamic train-track-bridge interaction

Summary of Doctoral Project:

There is a large national and international interest to increase the capacity on existing railway lines, especially to increase axle loads for freight transports. To allow for increased axle loads on existing railway bridges, comprehensive analyses are required. In many cases the load capacity is limited by theoretical exceedance due to dynamic effects, especially for short span bridges. The reason is that the current regulations for the train-track-bridge interaction is very simplified and potentially over-conservative in many cases. This PhD-project will focus on the dynamic interaction of the coupled train-track-bridge system with application to freight traffic. The work will involve theoretical studies and simulations as well as processing larger quantities of collected data. The aim of the project is to increase the understanding of dynamic effects on bridges caused by freight traffic, especially related to track irregularities.
