This double challenge is of fundamental importance for applications in quantum computing (coherence of qubits) and for phase change memories (thermal management of phase change memories or PCMems). With regard to defects, the main objective will be to determine at the microscopic level the nature of the two-level systems (ie two-level systems or TLS) which are suspected of causing the loss of coherence of the qubits. The detailed microscopic vision obtained by this work will make it possible to access fundamental information on the energy landscapes and the tunneling effect of low-temperature TLS. Additionally, these studies will stimulate computational design experiments in which a superconducting quantum material can be employed to study one or more TLSs. At higher temperatures, the result will be an understanding of the nature of vibrational modes in amorphous materials and the range of associated mean free paths that determine the sensitivity of thermal properties to downscaling.
