2. PhD Position – Growth of phase change materials using molecular beam epitaxy and analysis of atomic arrangement in reduced dimensions employing low energy electron diffraction (LEED)

With an excellent combination of ultra-fast switching and non-volatile property changes, phase change materials provide unique opportunities for neuromorphic computing and future memory devices. As the latest technology involves devices with a material thickness of just a few nanometers we need to understand the changes in physical properties of these materials in reduced dimensions. In our recent work, we have predicted how structural and optical properties of materials like GeTe change in reduced dimensions down to a few bilayers. In parallel, we demonstrate that these changes are due to fundamental changes of bonding as revealed by high quality GeTe thin films prepared using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).
