1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular and Computational Neurogenomics
Summary of PhD Program:
The overarching goal of this proposal is to understand why and how dysregulation of omnipresent and constantly expressed ARS proteins leads to dying-back neurodegeneration and affects specifically the peripheral neurons (PNs). This neuronal population contains the most polarized cells in our body and their sophisticated morphology and function render them highly susceptible to degeneration. The preliminary data generated in-house as well as the available public data suggest mechanisms involving genetic, epigenetic and chromatin organisation factors governing the cell-type specific response to ARS mutations.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evolutionary Biology
Summary of PhD Program:
Diatoms are the most productive and species-rich group of microalgae. They have extensively colonized marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, contributing 20% of all carbon fixation on Earth. Despite the global significance of diatoms, the genetic basis and regulatory mechanisms underlying their evolutionary and ecological success remain largely uncharted territory. Unraveling these mechanisms is crucial to assess how diatoms respond to climate change.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Biotechnology
Summary of PhD Program:
Analysis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and proteins in liquid biopsy samples of cancer patients has been significantly revolutionized over the past decade. As a result, it has become an important novel, minimally invasive approach for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, prediction and monitoring. During the past years, the team of Katleen De Preter has gained analytical and computational expertise in the isolation, quality control and analysis of cfDNA (circulating cell-free DNA) isolated from blood plasma. The team of Kris Gevaert has recently developed a high-throughput protocol for isolation of EVs (extracellular vesicles) for proteomic analysis and has implemented plasma proteome profiling, including profiling of cytolysis proteins, in their workflows.
