1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics
Summary of PhD Program:
The project is focused on preparation various carbon materials, including graphene related materials, optimized for application in sorption/separation of lanthanides and actinides. The project aims to prepare materials with high surface area using chemical modification of porous carbons, graphene and graphene oxide, introducing different defects and addition of nanoparticles. Important part of project is aimed on design of environmentally friendly methods for selective sorption of lanthanides from complex waste mixtures using advanced materials.
Application Deadline: 2024-10-01
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in physical geography, with a focus on fluvial geomorphology and ice dynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
In the project “Flood Seasons: Impact of seasonality shifts of flooding and ice on river dynamics” we aim to assess how current and future changes in the flooding and ice regime in Nordic rivers impact streambank erosion and sediment transport. In high-latitude and high-altitude rivers, winter ice cover and its break-up can have a large impact on bank erosion and sediment transport. Climate change will affect the ice regime by decreasing the duration of ice cover, altering the number of 0° C-crossings and thus ice break-up events, and change the timing of ice break-up/cover in relation to high flows.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in plant science with focus on deep-learning conifer genomics
Summary of PhD Program:
Ever advancing high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies continue to produce genome assemblies of larger genome sizes, such as conifers (10-40 Gb, 3-15x of human genome), wheat (15 Gb, 5x), axolotl salamander (32 Gb, 11x), and giant lungfish (43 Gb, 14x). Genome annotation (identifying various functional sequence elements) presents one big challenge in analyzing large genomes, for example, to identify transposable elements (TEs), major component of most plant genomes especially those large genomes.
Application Deadline: 2024-09-02
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics
Summary of PhD Program:
The ‘Ultrafast Nanoscience’ group at Umeå University is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate interested in performing research on ultrafast spectroscopy in condensed matter nanosystems. The project interfaces exciting fields of research, including ultrafast science, photonics and magnetism, with an overarching goal to understand the dynamics of electronic degrees of freedom (charges and spins) in nanostructured materials.
