If you’re a PhD degree holder and seeking postdoctoral fellowships, Utrecht University, Utrecht, Netherlands has several online applications open. Explore the opportunities across diverse research areas and submit your application soon.
1. Postdoctoral Job
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
You will complement our team, which currently consists of 3 PhD candidates and the PI. The team explores interactions between the arts of the Netherlands and the world beyond Europe in an attempt to establish how Netherlandish art has contributed to a global worldview. Whereas the PhD projects all take historical approaches (such as iconography and technical art history), you as a postdoc will focus on the recent past and contemporary period. The central research question is how and why paintings from the seventeenth-century Netherlands have been collected and displayed in museums in Asia, Africa, and Latin America in the period 1975-2022.
Application Deadline: 9 September 2024
2. Postdoctoral Job
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Roughly two billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. In water scarcity hotspots around the globe, non-renewable groundwater storage is being depleted, and surface water resources are overallocated. This has led to an unsustainable situation, where there is a large water gap between the demand and availability of freshwater. Direct potable reuse (DPR) – introducing highly purified wastewater into urban water supply systems – is one promising solution strategy to reduce this water gap in urban areas. You will explore the potential of DPR systems to mitigate water scarcity at global, national, and regional scales.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The state-of-the-art Hysitron TI990 offers unmatched precision, rate of throughput, and testing parameterisation that will situate the lab the forefront of material testing applied to earth materials. Research themes may include sustainable subsurface use, geothermal energy, and subsurface storage integrity. We encourage you to engage in personal research and development, supported by a leading institution and consortium.
Application Deadline: 30 September 2024
4. Postdoctoral Job
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
FLOW aims to uncover the molecular principles of how the cellular protein quality-control network modulates the fate of proteins from cradle to grave. Molecular chaperones and the degradation machinery determine the fate of proteins, and failure to do so leads to diseases as divergent as neurodegeneration or cystic fibrosis. The FLOW consortium, a unique and highly interdisciplinary team, aims to discover, rebuild and control the triaging of protein fate. We do this by combining biochemical, biophysical, cell biological, computational, and genetic methods, from single molecule to cell.
Application Deadline: 20 August 2024
5. Postdoctoral Job
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
This project addresses the global challenge of plastic waste. To achieve this mechanochemical and mechanistic fundamentals of polyolefin conversion are combined with the possibility to develop a viable recycling technology. You will have the opportunity to apply for patents and make valuable connections to industrial leaders along the plastic value chain. There are plenty of possibilities for outreach, e.g., via webinars or open days of the university.
Application Deadline: 29 August 2024
6. Postdoctoral Job
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
There are various Carbon dioxide Removal (CDR) options, including bio-energy-with-carbon-capture-and-storage, afforestation and reforestation, biochar, direct air capture and ocean alkalinization. Virtually all scenarios developed using integrated assessment models (IAMs) that are consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement include some form of CDR. At the same time, there is a clear debate on the use of CDR – in relation to the phase out of fossil fuels, the timing of climate policy and possible sustainable development consequences. A good representation of CDR options, in terms of potential, costs and limitations is therefore critically important.
Application Deadline: 1 September 2024
7. Postdoctoral Job
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Proper function of membranes and membrane proteins critically depends on the regulation of the fluidity (viscosity) of the membrane’s lipid matrix. In response to e.g. a change of the ambient temperature, the model eukaryote S. cerevisiae adjusts the fluidity of its membranes by tuning the level of unsaturation and the average length of the membrane lipid acyl chains. Whereas the mechanism of the former has been solved, the regulation of acyl chain length remains a mystery, although this more subtle mechanism may be equally important for membrane function. Your project will address this challenging fundamental question at the interface of yeast genetics, cell biology, and membrane biochemistry and biophysics.
Application Deadline: 2 September 2024
8. Postdoctoral Job
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
INFRAEMPIRE is a five-year project supported by a European Research Council Advanced Grant. The project explores the ways that rising economic powers such as Turkey, China, and Brazil rely on building the infrastructure of other states to drive reconstruction in their own capitals and create ‘soft power’ empires. INFRAEMPIRE turns an ethnographic lens on the infrastructural imperialism of the Turkish state, a growing power whose construction sector is reshaping the Global South and for almost two decades drove a domestic economic boom. INFRAEMPIRE will examine the infra-imaginaries, infra-power, and infra-subjectivities that such projects create.
