1. PhD position in Environmental Science, with focus on sustainable mining in the Arctic

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The mining industry plays an important role for the supply of essential metals, but mining is also associated with negative environmental effects and societal controversies. This is especially true in arctic environments in northern Sweden, where also a large number of abandoned, current and potential future mines are located. In order to reach more sustainable mining, we need to account for the environmental impact. Although authorities and industry routinely use biological indices to monitor the state of the environment, they lack guidelines to assess the ecological status of mining-impacted environments. This PhD-project aims to not only assess the ecological consequences in the Arctic, but also develop frameworks and guidelines for sustainable mining that can be applied on a larger spatial scale.

2. PhD in Ecology or Physical Geography with focus on remote sensing of Arctic terrestrial ecosystems

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Arctic ecosystems are changing, both in response to a changing climate and changes in land use. To understand how these factors separately or together cause these changes is detrimental for developing sustainable development and conservation in these environments in the future. Hyperspectral sensors can identify vegetation changes caused by a warming climate, human impact through the Holocene and archeological remains. You will in this project develop better methods to identifying these objects using hyperspectral data from hand-held sensors, drones and satellites. These methods will be used by researchers from various disciplines such as archeologists, ecologists and geoscientists.

3. Ph.D. Student position in Chemistry with focus on Planetary Geochemistry and Spectroscopy

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The doctoral studies are aimed at a doctoral degree where the main task is reseach within a project to resolve the formation and stability of liquid water in martian analogue soil and salt mixtures. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council. You will explore the interfacial chemistry of water/ice formed in these mixtures using vibrational spectroscopy under low and high temperature settings. Furthermore, you will bridge these analyses with remote sensing data from Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) of NASA to understand the aqueous history of Mars and revealing potential water resources for future human explorations. In addition to the research assignment, participation in postgraduate courses is also included.

4. PhD Position in Applied Physics – Specialization in Biomedical Engineering

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The project is part of the activities within the Center of Biomedical Engineering and Physics as well as Umeå Center for Functional Brain imaging, and is carried out in close collaboration with medical expertise at the University Hospital. One of the overall goals with our research in this area is to develop new MRI strategies to study vascular and cerebrospinal fluid flows with applications towards neurological diseases. As a PhD student, you will develop new knowledge related image acquisition, reconstruction as well as data post-processing. A major part of the work will consider 4D flow MRI measurements, time-resolved imaging of vascular flow. The research project includes performing experiments at the research MRI scanner at the University hospital.

5. PhD position in Medical Science with an orientation towards cell biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The project is about healing of connective tissue with a focus on the cornea of the eye. Scar-formation in the cornea can occur as a result of trauma, infection or certain hereditary diseases, and can lead to severe impairment of vision or even blindness. This PhD-project aims at better understanding the mechanisms underlying scar-formation, through experimental studies in different model systems of production, turnover, and organization of the collagen of the cornea, and of the importance of the collagen-producing cells (keratocytes) in scar-forming processes. Special focus is given to the role of the keratocytes as autocrine regulators of collagen metabolism.

6. 1 PhD student position in Computing Science with focus on AI for Data Management

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The project, led by Professor Diego Calvanese, concerns foundational and/or applied research in the context of flexible and efficient management of large amounts of richly structured data, by relying on the paradigm of Virtual Knowledge Graphs (VKGs, also known as Ontology-based Data Access). Specifically, the project aims at extending VKGs to address novel settings, that may include the following elements: (i) additional forms of data/knowledge (e.g., temporal, geospatial, aggregated, numeric); (ii) heterogeneous data sources of different types beyond relational ones (such as graph-structured data, json, xml, csv, streaming, textual); (iii) novel kinds of problems, notably provenance, explanation, personalization, data analysis and machine learning over VKGs, optimization and performance tuning.

7. PhD position in political science with a focus on Transformation, Riskification and Geopolitics in the Arctic

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The aim of this doctoral project is to contribute with new empirical insights into political drivers in the development of the Arctic and to increase our contextual understanding by way of international concepts facilitating cross-disciplinary dialogue. The climate crisis and increasing competition over natural resources and security solutions challenge established forms of cooperation in the region and by extension the global goals of sustainability, for example as these are expressed Agenda 2030. The Arctic lacks an obvious center of gravity while the effects of transformation are unevenly distributed. Actors calculate risk under the influence of different geopolitical connotations. Who among the many actors involved have the power to influence Arctic transformation? Is it conceivable to arrive at a sustainable agenda, not broken by groups of optimists, skeptics and deniers?
