1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of translational cancer cell and tissue models to study anticancer drug response and resistance
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD project, you will assess and establish different culture systems, including 3D co-cultures and primary patient samples, for drug discovery. You will use these models to characterize anticancer drugs and determine the impact of non-cancerous cell types. You will also investigate how therapies alter the phenotypes of fibroblasts themselves.
Application Deadline: 05/08/2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rule-based Clinical Decision System Supporting Parkinson’s Decision-Making
Summary of PhD Program:
Healthcare decision-making is a complex and important process. It is relevant to have a tool that helps with accurate and crucial decisions based on clinical data. Each stage has a vital decision to be made depending on other stages’ decisions. Thus, a clinical decision support system (CDSS) model based on a data mining approach becomes a leading solution. Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) have been recommended for their potential to reduce medical errors and influence the quality and safety of health care.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding Decisions of Machine Learning Models with Explorable Explanations
Summary of PhD Program:
The successful applicant will join the Interdisciplinary Computing and Complex BioSystems group in the School of Computing at Newcastle University. The group specialises in interdisciplinary research at the interface of computing science and natural and synthetic complex systems (e.g. in biology or health care), and has expertise in scientific computing and machine intelligence. You will have a chance to work alongside other researches developing next generation algorithms to gain insights from real-world data, and will obtain training in independent problem solving, scientific software development, and science communication.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Incentivizing Participation in Privacy-Enhancing Technologies
Summary of PhD Program:
Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), such as Secure Multi-party Computation (MPC) and Federated Learning (FL) allow parties to collaboratively analyze a collection of data partitions where each data partition is contributed by a different party (such as banks, or law enforcement agencies). Two facts about most PETs exist: (i) the output of PETs reveals some information about the parties’ private input sets (i.e., the computation result in FL or MPC), and (ii) various variants of PETs do not output the result to all parties, even in those PETs that do, not all of the parties are necessarily interested in it. Given these facts, a natural question arises: How can we incentivize parties that do not receive the result or do not express interest in it to participate in PETs?
Application Deadline: 15 September 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Modelling of Individualised Therapies and Treatment Responses in Psoriasis
Summary of PhD Program:
Psoriasis vulgaris is a systemic immune-mediated inflammatory disease affecting 2–3% of the world population. It manifests itself as red scaly plaques distributed over the whole skin, causing significant disability and impairment to quality of life. The pathophysiology of psoriasis is complex, multi-factorial and thought to be triggered through environmental genetic interactions. For example, psoriasis can be triggered in response to innate or environmental stimuli (e.g., injury, infection, or certain behavioural patterns).

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geographies of Refuge
Summary of PhD Program:
The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University invites applications for a fully funded doctoral studentship on the theme ‘Geographies of refuge’. Supervised by Dr Malene H. Jacobsen (Geography), the successful candidate is expected to develop their own research project within this theme. We welcome applications from students who approach geographies of refuge from diverse geographical locations and theoretical perspectives, including decolonial and postcolonial theory, feminist theory, and/or critical race theory.
Application Deadline: 30/07/24
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Net Zero – Sewage sludge treatment technology for sustainable resource recovery and contaminants abatement
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of the PhD project is to develop an innovative technology for sustainable energy/nutrients recovery and removal persistent pollutants from sludge. The process developed can serve as a stand-alone process or be retrofitted into existing infrastructure of the wastewater industry. In this project, the candidate will focus on (1) mechanistic understanding processes inside a hydrothermal process at subcritical conditions; (2) Understand the effects of operating conditions and designs on products distribution to maximise the recovery of energy/nutrients and contaminant abatement; and (3) Understand hydrodynamics inside hydrothermal reactor for processing sludge to aid design a system, characterisation and testing.
Application Deadline: 8th August 2024

Application Deadline: 31 July 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Process Industries: Net Zero Low GWP working fluids for Thermosyphons
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will investigate the use of low GWP working fluids for Thermosyphons. Thermosyphons are a high efficiency cooling solution employed in various applications, ranging from green power generation to the cooling of high powered electronics. They are a passive device: in the most basic form they consist of an evacuated sealed tube which is partially filled with a working fluid. The working fluid evaporates at the bottom when subjected to a thermal load, and condenses at the top end. Hence, heat is transferred from source to sink without the need of external pumping at very high transport rates, dictated by two-phase heat transfer at both ends of the pipe.
Application Deadline: 8th August 2024
10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Process Industries: Net Zero 3D Heat Pipe Technology
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will develop next generation 3D Heat Pipes for Space Applications, to maximise thermal transport efficiency within advanced electronics for space and terrestrial applications. Vapour chambers and loop heat pipes are proposed for development into a 3D format. Vapour chambers are ultra-thin heat pipes used to rapidly spread heat in the x-y plane. They have various applications in electronics cooling/heat spreading in space and terrestrial applications. 3D vapour chambers are a recent advancement combining a state-of-art 2D vapour chamber with a traditional heat pipe structure to allow heat spreading and dissipation across all 3 dimensions. Loop heat pipes incorporate a complex evaporator with flexible transport lines, that require development for utilisation in a 3D environment. This project will focus on the advancement of vapour chambers and loop heat pipes into 3 dimensional environments.
