1. Postdoctoral Research Fellow (EmergentCommunity-project)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The postdoctoral researcher will study the sense-making processes that result from affective reactions to everyday encounters. The overall aim is to explore the development of social and political consciousness among different people. The data collection is facilitated by and organized around the 360-degree videos that are made in the project and that display social encounters in participants’ everyday living environments. After viewing the videos, the research participants will be interviewed and they are asked to reflect on thoughts, feelings, and reactions that the videos evoked, and mirror those against their own everyday lives.
Last Application Date: June 30, 2022
2. Postdoctoral Researcher (Early modern disability history)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The postdoctoral researcher will focus on lived religion and disability in early modern (ca. 1500–1700) Central Europe (preferably German-speaking areas but other areas are considered as well). The research will examine the influence of the Protestant Reformation on perceptions and experiences of bodily and mental impairments to assess how the profound religious changes occurring during the period shaped emerging notions of ‘disability’. The research will analyze diverse sources from the Reformation to evaluate how far understandings and experiences of ‘disability’ differed from those found by scholars for the late medieval world.

4. Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Applied Cryptography and PETS
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The primary objective of the Network and Information Security Group (NISEC) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences is to bring together expertise in education, research, and practice in the field of information security and privacy. Active since 1996, NISEC has notable achievements nationally, such as pioneering the deployment of native IPv6 in Finnish campus networks, introducing and rolling out Eduroam-based wireless roaming in Finland, forming the TREX regional Internet exchange point, establishing internationally federated research testbeds with PlanetLAB and GENI, as well as creating two successful spinoff companies. The core competencies of NISEC currently traverse four areas: Network Security; IoT Security; Hardware-Assisted Security; Privacy and Usable Security.

5. Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PalestineFutures-research project)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The postdoctoral research fellow will work with the part of the project that focuses on power relations and their entwining with how futures affect and become part of the everyday expectation horizons in occupied Palestinian territories. More specific research topics that the applicants need to explain further in their ‘Plan of intent’ can include, for instance, questions around infrastructural embodiments, mundane effects of planning, intimate politics of home/demolitions, or questions of affective futures. The position includes conducting postdoctoral level research, hence excellent knowledge on the relevant social science methods, participatory fieldwork practices, and methodological/conceptual debates in human/political geography (or other relevant field, such as anthropology, sociology, and political science) are key for a successful application. The duties also include participation in the activities of relevant research groups, Palestine Research Group (PRG) and Space and Political Research Group (SPARG), and limited amount of other project duties and teaching in English to be agreed upon separately (no more than 5% of annual work time).

6. Postdoctoral Researcher in cellular neuroscience for development of advanced seizure initiation & prediction model
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Adj. Prof Susanna Narkilahti’s NeuroGroup develops novel human stem cell-based in vitro models for neuronal applications including brain on chip models with integrated engineering technologies. Here, in a consortium project, the aim is to utilize human pluripotent stem cells derived neurons in development of advanced seizure initiation and prediction model together with Prof Pasi Kallio at Tampere University. Our main aim is to develop an in vitro seizure model that includes human neuronal networks which express epileptic seizures naturally, after induction or due to the seizurogenic nature of an introduced compound. Neural networks are grown under controlled conditions in a microfluidic platform equipped with sensors and electrodes. The model will enable initiation of specific seizure fingerprints, characterization of in vitro seizure types in epilepsies of different genetical background as well as testing of drug therapies. It also provides means for testing seizurogenic side effects of compounds in drug development pipelines. The model is foreseen as a valuable tool for the in vitro research of epileptic disease mechanisms, drug development and screening, and testing of neurotoxic compounds.
