Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, we will study whiteflies, a diverse group of agriculturally important insects that feed on plants and can transmit a variety of plant viruses. Whiteflies pose a severe threat to many plant crops, both in greenhouses and open fields. The management of this pest currently relies on insecticides; however, most whitefly species have already developed insecticide resistance. Biological control based on microorganisms is a promising tool; however, this requires fundamental understanding of the microbiome of whiteflies and its impact on virus transmission.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Combining floating offshore energy with nature inclusive seafood production; focus on suspended shellfish culture and benthic organisms

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project will study the biodiversity development among the shellfish cultures and how these cultures will enrich the seafloor. To this end shellfish production will be related to the quantity and quality of biodeposits produced, the size-dependent sinking velocity of the faecal pellets and dispersion and fate of the biodeposits. Depending on the research question lab-, mesocosm- or field-experiments will be set up. The uptake rate of particles of different sizes will be determined. The chemical composition of feces and pseudofaces will be compared with seston samples and studied microscopically. Biodiversity development and food sources of benthic organisms underneath the structures will be investigated using stable isotopes.

Summary of PhD Program:

The tropical oceans are blanketed by shallow convective clouds, which cool the planet. These “trade cumuli” are almost always organised into striking patterns of tens to hundreds of kilometres across, which arise from a subtle interplay between clouds and circulations. Unravelling this cloud-circulation coupling, and its sensitivity to changes in climate, is therefore crucial to understand how rapidly Earth is warming. In recent years, we have made major advances in observing and simulating the organisation of tropical shallow clouds. Yet we miss a simple, systematic theory for why they organise the way they do, and how they shape our climate.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Taming Ru(0) toward Enantioselective Catalysis (TRuE)

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD student, you will focus on the investigation of strategies that stabilize Ru(0) center while maintaining its high reactivity. You will design and synthesize organic ligands, and use them for the formation of Ru(0) complexes under inert atmosphere (glovebox). Synthesized complexes will be identified and characterize by combination of single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy – both instruments are available for walk-in use as a part of this project. 7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Shaping shoreface sand nourishments to optimise biodiversity

Summary of PhD Program:

Sand nourishment is a widely used coastal management strategy to offset coastal erosion. Currently, 10 million m3 of sand are added to the Dutch coast annually. These volumes will need to be further increased to counteract the expected rates of sea level rise. While adding sand to the shoreface, the local biodiversity will be impacted, however, it also creates opportunities for organisms to colonise the new niches that have become available. This PhD project aims to establish how nourishments can be best designed to minimise the overall diversity loss by optimising new habitat creation for marine benthos.
