2. PhD Research Fellow in Quaternary geology and paleoclimate

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PhD Research Fellow is a part of the project “Past behavior of the Southern Ocean`s atmosphere and cryosphere (SOUTHSPHERE). The project seeks to deepen our understanding of the natural range of atmospheric climate variability in the Southern Ocean. We are particularly interested in the past behavior of the Southern hemisphere westerlies: powerful winds that regulate Earth`s climate by spurring ocean circulation, storing anthropogenic carbon, and exchanging heat. The southerly westerly winds play a very important role in the global climate system. Observations show that they also play an important role in today’s global warming. To reconstruct the climate system, the project will use glaciers as a climate indicator through studies of lakes. To make continuousreconstructions of the glaciers, one will use various proxy methods that include CT scanning and cryptotephra analysis to ensure the most robust reconstructions possible. All sediment samples were collected during the field season of 2019. For the DYNASOR project, the successful candidate will contribute with lake sediment analyses from Iceland using the same methods as in the Kerguelen Islands but with focus on reconstructing past mega floods from the glacier Vatnajökull. This includes field work in Iceland to collect sediment cores in the first part of the PhD project.

4. PhD research fellowship in ocean dynamics at the Department of Earth Science

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Multiple lines of evidence show that the circulation of the North Atlantic Ocean is changing. One notable expression of these changes is a regional cooling that is in striking contrast to the global trend; the “warming hole”. While the similarity between this cooling and the fingerprint of AMOC weakening in climate models has been used to argue that the decline in circulation present in virtually all simulations of future climate is already underway, recent observations call the hypothesized mechanism into question. This debate highlights both the complexity and urgency of contextualizing the changing subpolar North Atlantic. Here we will focus on two fundamental aspects underlying the current uncertainty, (1) the interaction of surface gyre and deep overturning circulation, and (2) a paleoceanographic perspective of natural variability in the region.

5. PhD Research Fellow in synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The primary objective of the project is to prepare new metal-organic framework materials containing frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP) and to investigate the properties of these solid systems towards hydrogen and nitrogen activation and use in hydrogenation reaction. The main tasks for the researcher will be synthesis of organic linker molecules, synthesis of metal-organic framework compounds with FLPs, characterization of the obtained materials, primarily by X-ray diffraction, including synchrotron experiments, thermal analysis, sorption measurements, and catalytic testing. We are searching for a highly qualified and motivated candidates with an excellent track-record in chemistry, who is curious and creative, has a willingness to learn and apply new methods, has the skill to work independently and as a coworker in a team. The candidate is expected to contribute to the general maintenance of the research infrastructure in the research group, participate in popular science outreach activities that are part of the project dissemination and relocate for at least one, potentially more, research stays of 3 months at the project partner at the Technical University in Darmstadt (Germany).

7. PhD position in Learning Sciences

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Understanding learning is a complex. Multimodal data indicators for capturing behavioural, cognitive, motivational, and emotional processes can be used in combination to give us new insights into learning and its contexts, in individual or collaborative learning contexts. Multimodal learning analytics (MMLA), a subfield of learning analytics, deals with data collected and integrated from different sources (e.g., activity data, click-stream, physiological data, audio, video, eye-tracking, movement, fNIRS) allowing a more panoramic and unique understanding of learning processes. The selection of which data to use to understand learning is challenging, and needs to be part of the research project.

10. PhD position in geomicrobiology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In the deep sea, chemical and physical properties of seawater enforce strong constraints on biological processes, which in turn can lead to radical changes in the seawater composition. This intimate relationship with complex feedbacks ultimately regulates the partitioning of geochemical species and the diversity and activity of life processes in this environment. The project seeks to understand this coupling from a quantitative perspective and will pursue the following two objectives: 1) Determine how variability in fluid composition drives and constrains biological activity and diversity by combining measurements of physical and chemical fluid properties with quantitative estimates of biological activity and diversity using reaction rate models and molecular marker genes, respectively. 2) Quantify geochemical consequences of fluid and life interactions through in situ observations and modelling.

11. PhD Research Fellow in Experimental Reservoir Physics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

A PhD position within the field of experimental reservoir physics is available at the Department of Physics and Technology starting this spring (April – June 2022). The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years. The position is part of the Center of Sustainable Subsurface Resources (CSSR). The main ambition for CSSR is to provide the knowledge required for the low carbon transition the Norwegian petroleum industry foresee for the next decade. A key point is the impact of increased electrification and how operations will be impacted by the intermittency associated with renewable energy supply and fluctuating electricity prices. A new energy system necessitates new knowledge of physical processes. This project will emphasize reservoir flow and short-term energy storage concepts, using energy carriers such as hydrogen.
