1. PhD Position in signal processing and machine learning
Summary of PhD Program:
People are using their time in the 24-hour day in very different ways. Sleep, sedentary behavior (sitting or lying), and physical activity are the activities that take up the 24-hour day, but until now, it is not clear how adults should distribute their time among these activities to gain optimal health benefits. In our project FINNACT24, funded by Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland, our aim is to demonstrate the most beneficial way for adults to spend their time in sleep, sedentary behaviors, and physical activity over a 24-hour cycle for better health. The doctoral project within the FINNACT24-project will explore the applications of deep learning approaches for analyzing and profiling daily living activities measured by wearable activity monitors. As a doctoral researcher you will work in the field of signal processing and machine learning.

2. 3 PhD Position in multi-antenna THz communications
Summary of PhD Program:
Increasing the capacity of beyond-5G wireless systems will require operating over large frequency bands and using truly massive antennas, which poses fundamental challenges in terms of RF design and signal propagation. The research will span analytical and algorithmic aspects of massive MIMO communications for 6G wireless systems operating at THz frequencies. It will focus on spectral and energy efficiency enhancements considering low-complexity RF designs. Furthermore, it will focus on near-field transmissions under physically consistent signal propagation. Different applications of THz communications and sensing will be considered, including low-power solutions for e-health. The research is supported by Academy of Finland funding awarded to Assist. Prof. Italo Atzeni.

3. PhD Position in pathogenic mechanisms in osteoarthritis
Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for talented and highly motivated research-oriented persons who are interested in sustainability, biodiversity, resilience, climate change and tourism and their connections with adaptation and mitigation in the Anthropocene. More specifically, we welcome research ambitions that relate tourism mobilities to wider societal developments and current discussions on sustainability, planning and governance, resilience, and/or digitalization. Focus could be on regenerative and responsible tourism, urban and/or rural developments, tourism employment and service work, tourism entrepreneurship, tourism policy and planning, tourist experiences, or hospitality. It is also possible to propose other research themes of relevance to service studies in tourism, place, and mobility. Summary of PhD Program:
The person appointed for the position will become a part of a major expansion of the university’s profiling area Generation Z and beyond: Co-evolution of human capabilities and intelligent technologies in the 21st century. The appointed person is expected to conduct rigorous, nationally and internationally recognized research, and to live in Oulu, Finland. The position also includes some teaching duties. Research topic is related to advancing and developing children’s non-formal and formal education in India and Finland with means of digital technology. 6. PhD Position in Intervertebral Disc Experimental Therapeutics
Summary of PhD Program:
We are now looking for a dedicated and promising Doctoral Researcher to join the group of Professor Ali Mobasheri to work on an interdisciplinary project focused on the formulation and testing of experimental therapeutics for the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration and low back pain, including nanotechnology, senolytics, and cell-based gene therapy. 8. 2 PhD Position in Materials and mechanical engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
We are now looking for two highly motivated Doctoral Researchers to contribute to a research project on advanced steels for a green planet and hydrogen society. Future steel design needs to focus on developing/modifying compositions and processing routes to generate steels for demanding conditions, especially for the presence of hydrogen. To facilitate this, the interactions and mechanical behavior with hydrogen in the current state-of-art advanced high-strength steels must be understood. The research is expected to focus on fundamental understanding of hydrogen embrittlement in advanced ultrahigh-strength steels, and testing and characterization of hydrogen-steel interactions. More specifically, various modes of deformation mechanisms, e.g., transformation-induced plasticity introduced through novel composition design and microstructural modification, are of especial interest.

Summary of PhD Program:
We are now looking for a Doctoral Researcher for a three-year position (starting 1.12.2022) in ‘intelligent user interfaces’ at the Center for Ubiquitous Computing, Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (http://ubicomp.oulu.fi). In this project, you will investigate and create novel web and mobile based input interfaces to maximize quality and quantity. This includes leveraging different design approaches such as gamification and serious games for motivating people to donate data. The position is connected to a new Academy of Finland project where the overall goal is to collect training data for Artificial Intelligence and, more specifically, Natural Language Processing. Thus, the candidate will also get an understanding of the modern NLP landscape. You will work alongside with other researchers focusing on similar topics.
